The Taino Indians were the first settlers in the country of the Dominican Republic. There is still there a minute presence of them there. These people were quiet and worked on the agricultural aspects of the country. The country has subsequent been dominated by external leaders from Spain, France and the United States. Christopher Columbus gave the country the name Hispaniola when he "discovered" it in 1492. Santo Domingo, the Capital was built between the years 1496 and 1498. It was the first European city in the western hemisphere. It hosted the first catholic cathedral, the first hospital and the first university. The entire island had been under the Spanish influence for 200 years, until 1767 when the western third of the island was given to France under the Treaty of Ryswick. France gained control over the entire island in 1797 under the Treaty of Basle.

CULTURE The Eastern Caribbean has produced notable figures in literature, including V S Naipaul of Trinidad, George Lamming of Barbados, Jamaica Kincaid of Antigua, Maryse Condé and Nobel prizewinner Saint-John Perse of Guadeloupe, Jean Rhys of Dominica and St Lucia's Nobel prizewinner, Derek Walcott. The contemporary poets Aimé Césaire and Édouard Glissant hail from Martinique; they both write about the Blacks' struggles for cultural identity under the burden of colonial influences. The Caribbean's prime cultural contribution is its music - calypso, soca, steel pan, ska, reggae and zouk. Domestic architecture is characterised by brightly painted, corrugated-iron roofed, wooden-shuttered structures. Population densities vary widely, with Barbados' population density of 591 people per sq km making it one of the world's most densely populated countries, while some of the smaller islands such as Saba and St Barts have fewer than 5000 people. The vast majority of islanders are of African ancestry, and the ethnic mix also includes those of European, East Indian, Middle Eastern, Asian and American descent. About 3000 Caribs still live on the eastern side of Dominica, and there are smaller native populations on St Vincent and Trinidad.

Hispaniola is the second-largest of the Greater Antilles islands, and lies west of Puerto Rico and east of Cuba and Jamaica . A legacy of unsettled, mostly non-representative rule lasted for much of the 20th century ; the move towards representative democracy has improved vastly since the death of military dictator Rafael Le³nidas Trujillo in . Dominicans sometimes refer to their country as Quisqueya , a name for Hispaniola used by the native Tano Indians. The island of Hispaniola , which includes the present-day Dominican Republic , was the first in the New World colonized by the Spaniards . These settlers brought with them diseases previously unknown to the native inhabitants, which combined with the exploitation by the colonists served to decimate the native population. To replace their workers, the colonists began importing slaves. The Dominican Republic's culture is said to have European, African and Native American roots. (Many Dominicans, however, prefer to think of themselves as European.) While Dominicans may regard themselves as being one big Dominican family, there are vast differences in class and education that separate different groups. There are very rich people, and there are very humble, poor farmers and marginal urban barrio dwellers. The metropolitan culture available to the upper class and vanishing (due to economic turbulence as of late) middle class is often comparable to the life of city dwellers in the rich countries of Western Europe and the United States. But this metropolitan culture doesn't reach the poorest people, who may not have the most basic amenities—light, running water, sanitary facilities nor consumer electronics. Some of the traits shared by all class groups are particularist interpersonal relations, folk

How about a place where there is room for mountain farms, the real estate is at bargain basement prices and the beer is great? What if I throw in a historic colonial zone where 500 year old buildings are up for sale and the tourists are mostly European? Sound too good to be true? Well, it's true! of Dominican Republic Background:
The Dominican Republic forms the eastern two-thirds, and Haiti the remainder of the Hispaniola island, formerly known as Santo Domingo.
In pre-columbian times the island was inhabited by Tainos, an Arawak-speaking people. In 1492 C. Columbus discovered the island and claimed it immediately for the Spanish Crown. It was then occupied by the usual ruling forces of that time, the Spanish and the French. The not so friendly colonizers reduced the Taino population from about 1 million to about 500 within 50 years.
Today Dominican Republic is inhabited mostly by people of mixed European and African origins. The African heritage is reflected most noticeably in the music, the merengue. The country is a main tourist destination of the region.
