Dominica is one of the Windward Islands and is located between two French administered islands, Guadeloupe to the north and Martinique to its south. The soil formation is of volcanic origin and it possesses a mountainous terrain. The highest point is Morne Diablotins, but it has several other mountainous terrains. It has a lush green colour as there is plenty rainfall especially in the mountain areas. It also has many small rivers and a Boiling Lake, from which sulphurous gases frequently escape. The government promotes sustainable management of the forests to help protect the island's biodiversity. Roseau is the capital of Dominica and the chief port. The majority of people there are of African descent, brought over from there during the eighteenth century. There are also a number of Carib Indians who live on the island. English is the official language of the island, but a great number of people speak the French dialect, Patois. Roman Catholicism is the main religion, which accounts for more than three quarters of the inhabitants followed by the Protestant church.

    Dominica's Unique Culture
Like many Caribbean islands, Dominica has been influenced by different cultures over the course of its history. Originally inhabited by Arawak and Carib Indians, colonised by Europeans (the English and French in particular), injected with a strong African influence during the 18th century, then flooded with American television in recent years, Dominica's culture is as multi-faceted as the madras fabric worn as traditional dress.

Cuisine Our cuisine is like our history and culture, an exciting blend which draws heavily from our Creole past. Tropical fruits and vegetables are in abundance, and not surprising for an island, our range of seafood is second to none! Particular delicacies you should try include 'mountain chicken' - a large frog (in season only); our delicious locally grown coffee; and a wide range of local fruit juices. Be sure to take home with you our hot pepper sauce!

B rilliant! Amazing! Wow! Were some of the adjectives racing through my mind as I listened, first to Dominica's lady of song Ophelia Marie, then watched in complete amazement as dancers from the Castle Bruce Cultural Group bedecked in the lively colors of the madras danced and glided to the symphonic sounds of Dominica's Jing-Ping.
This stunning display was not taking place in Dominica, in fact, it was unfolding thousands of miles away in Miami. It was a celebration of Dominica's Independence as a proud and growing Nation.

People of Dominica Dominica is mainly made up of the black, constituting over 90 per cent of the population. They are basically descendants of the slaves brought from Africa in the 18th century. A small group of Carib also inhabits the island. Though English is the official language, French Patois is also widely spoken. Majority of the population are Roman Catholics. Flag of Dominica The flag of Dominica is green, with a centered cross of three equal bands. The vertical part of the flag towards the hoist side is yellow; then black, and then white. The horizontal part is again yellow, then black, and then white. The center of the cross is superimposed with a red disk bearing a sisserou parrot encircled by 10 green, five-pointed stars edged in yellow. The 10 stars represent the 10 administrative divisions (parishes).

Economy of Dominica High annual rainfall has given way to rich, fertile soil in Dominica. This, in turn, has promoted farming and today farming forms the backbone of the economy in Dominica. Agricultural products grown include bananas, citrus fruit (especially grapefruit and limes), coconuts, cocoa, cinnamon, vanilla beans, and vegetables. Manufacturing is limited to processing of farm products. Fruit juices, alcoholic beverages, soap, and essential oils forms the main manufactured products.

The songs are published on a CD entitled Cultural Passport which was released on October 25th, 2003, 7 days before Dominica’s Independence Day, and at the beginning of the acclaimed World Creole Music Festival, the most popular tourist event on the Island. The funds generated from this project will be earmarked towards teaching of culture, music and music business to the youths of Dominica. Dominica has been noted to be a cultural center in the Caribbean, sprouting music styles such as Zouk, Belle’ Cadence and Bouyon; however, the island falls short of harnessing the full potential of its music from a social and economic standpoint.
