Excerpts taken from 'Our Island Culture'
The following is an outline of these folk dances which have grown out of the life of the people who danced them and so, like language, reveal something of their customs, habits and work. QUADRILLE
: A square dance of French origin. Four couple dance opposite and with each other. In the original Quadrille there are five separate and complete figures. The whole forms a set of Quadrille. This can take some time to complete, and since most are now done as public performances rather than for personal amusement, a number of sets are usually cut out. The pace of the quadrille has naturally been quickened and among the types danced today are the 'Sharp' 'Slow', 'French' and 'Irish' Quadrilles. LANCERS : This is a later quadrille which came via Britain in the 1830's and contained familiar figures from the traditional English dances and Scottish and Irish reels. It was popular with the military and the steps of the male have a more stiff and formal pace.

home page accommodation Facilities Activities ... Carib Indians Dominica has a rich cultural diversity rooted in African tradition. Creole music, with its roots in the French Creole language, was born in Dominica, and is based on rhythmic African musical patterns. Dancers, storytellers, artists and musicians are in abundance in every village, with regular performances all over the island, especially during Creole week and Independance day celebrations in November. Music is all about. Our local village of Grand Fond , has a fascinating history, the people are always excited to meet new visitors, and it is an interesting and welcoming place to visit. Each year every village has its own feast, a time for eating, dancing, singing and folk traditions, and there are annual celebrations for Independance, Carnival and the World Creole Music Festival Here at 3 Rivers we make every effort to showcase local culture. We have on display, and in use, various traditional objects such as an ancient sugar cane press for juicing our organic sugar cane, and our Carib Jungle Cabin to show our guests how the Carib Indians used to live. The Carib Indians and The Carib Territory play an important role in Dominica. The 3000 inhabitants of the reserve are descended from the island's original inhabitants, and are the last remaining tribe of Carib Indians in the world.

CULTURE The Eastern Caribbean has produced notable figures in literature, including V S Naipaul of Trinidad, George Lamming of Barbados, Jamaica Kincaid of Antigua, Maryse Condé and Nobel prizewinner Saint-John Perse of Guadeloupe, Jean Rhys of Dominica and St Lucia's Nobel prizewinner, Derek Walcott. The contemporary poets Aimé Césaire and Édouard Glissant hail from Martinique; they both write about the Blacks' struggles for cultural identity under the burden of colonial influences. The Caribbean's prime cultural contribution is its music - calypso, soca, steel pan, ska, reggae and zouk. Domestic architecture is characterised by brightly painted, corrugated-iron roofed, wooden-shuttered structures. Population densities vary widely, with Barbados' population density of 591 people per sq km making it one of the world's most densely populated countries, while some of the smaller islands such as Saba and St Barts have fewer than 5000 people. The vast majority of islanders are of African ancestry, and the ethnic mix also includes those of European, East Indian, Middle Eastern, Asian and American descent. About 3000 Caribs still live on the eastern side of Dominica, and there are smaller native populations on St Vincent and Trinidad.
