Introduction For the purposes of this guidance, the term domestic violence is used to describe the physical, emotional and mental abuse of women by male partners or ex-partners. The impact of this violence is felt strongly, but not always explicitly, in every general practitioner's consulting room. The manner in which the general practitioner responds to a woman's first tentative attempt to seek help to change her situation can make an immense difference to that woman's life and those of her children (Richardson and Feder, 1997). The 1989 Home Office Research Study on Domestic Violence (Smith, 1989) and a subsequent editorial in the

Domestic violence and child abuse often co-exist . If you find one of these, evaluate the family for the other. Managing these situations is complex . It may help to share the decision making process with other members of your team, or the “named” doctor or nurse for child protection in your PC0. Make a risk assessment for the child . Is the child at risk of significant harm from either parent?

Introduction to Domestic Violence Issues. Domestic violence is a significant, underlying cause of poor health and is well-documented as a serious public health issue. Domestic violence can take many forms. It can include physical, sexual, economic, emotional, social and/or psychological abuse. In addition to being at increased risk for physical harm, victims of all forms of domestic violence are at risk for other complications which eventually lead to the need for medical care and other services. The New York State (NYS) Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (OPDV) uses a broad definition of domestic violence:
  • "Domestic violence is a pattern of coercive behavior which can include physical, sexual, economic, emotional and/or psychological abuse exerted by an intimate partner over another with the goal of establishing and maintaining power and control."

"Why Does She Stay?" CASA has launched an innovative approach to community education with "Why Does She Stay?", a free one-hour presentation that explores common misconceptions about domestic abuse. This presentation can be held for your group at the CASA Community Center or at a location of your choice. For more information call 727-895-4912 ext 101 or email awood@casa-stpete.org CASA...More than just a shelter Did you know that CASA touches the lives of over 300 children per year through its residential programs alone? One way we accomplish this is through our Youth Center. The negative effects of domestic abuse on children are often evident in poor grades, low self esteem, and behavioral problems. Studies also show that children who grow up in families where abuse is present are far more likely to re-create the abusive patterns in their future relationships. Through a variety of activities at the center, children learn cooperation skills, receive homework and reading help, and also have access to tutoring. Our after school program allows parents to work and attend school without concern or fear for the safety of their kids. Access the CASA Newsletter here for more news!
