Why Do We Know So Little About Domestic Abuse And Violence Against Men There are many reasons why we don't know more about domestic abuse and violence against men. First of all, the incidence of domestic violence reported men appears to be so low that it is hard to get reliable estimates. In addition, it has taken years of advocacy and support to encourage women to report domestic violence. Virtually nothing has been done to encourage men to report abuse. The idea that men could be victims of domestic abuse and violence is so unthinkable that many men will not even attempt to report the situation. The Problem With Assumptions About Domestic Abuse And Violence It is a widely held assumption that women are always the victims and men are always the perpetrators. Between 50 and 60% of all domestic abuse and violence is against women. There are many reasons why people assume men are never victims and why women often ignore the possibility. For one thing, domestic abuse and violence has been minimized, justified and ignored for a very long time. Women are now more organized, supportive and outspoken about the epidemic of domestic abuse and violence against women. Very little attention has been paid to the issue of domestic abuse and violence against men - especially because violence against women has been so obvious and was ignored for so long.

Although for many it seems hard to believe, men in North American society are being domestically abused by their wives or girlfriends in roughly the same amount as women are abused by their male partners. How often in a day do we North Americans see violence against men, both from other men and from women? Simply watching an hour or two of television will give some idea as to the answer. Violence against men is a common sight, even to the level of it being humorous. It is very common to see a woman strike a man in jest or in frustration or for whatever reason, more often than we would ever see a man strike a woman.

SUMMARY: This bibliography examines 174 scholarly investigations: 138 empirical studies and 36 reviews and/or analyses, which demonstrate that women are as physically aggressive, or more aggressive, than men in their relationships with their spouses or male partners. The aggregate sample size in the reviewed studies exceeds 163,800. Archer, J. (2000). Sex differences in aggression between heterosexual partners: A meta-analytic review. Psychological Bulletin, 126, 651-680. (Meta-analyses of sex differences in physical aggression indicate that women were more likely than men to “use one or more acts of physical aggression and to use such acts more frequently.” In terms of injuries, women were somewhat more likely to be injured, and analyses reveal that 62% of those injured were women.) Archer, J. (2002). Sex differences in physically aggressive acts between heterosexual partners: A meta-analytic review. Aggression and Violent Behavior, 7, 213-351. (Analyzing responses to the Conflict Tactic Scale and using a data set somewhat different from the previous 2000 publication, the author reports that women are more likely than men to throw something at their partners, as well as slap, kick, bite, punch and hit with an object. Men were more likely than women to strangle, choke, or beat up their partners.)

Abstract
Top People hit and abuse family members because they can. "Primary aggressor" laws usually result in arrest of the male and ignore research showing 50% of domestic assaults are mutual combat. The woman is thus encouraged to abuse her partner further until finally he will take no more. Such provocation of the human male is dangerous. There is no support in the present data for the hypothesis that women use violence only in self defense. Three common reasons women give for male abuse are: to resolve the argument; to respond to family crisis; and to " stop him bothering me." Male abuse of a woman, requiring self defense, is one of the less-frequently stated reasons by women for their assaults. Our research shows that a gender-balanced approach to domestic violence is essential in order to reduce both the frequency and severity of such incidents for both men and women. Present laws and practices appear to commonly have the opposite effect.

Other Issues The Equal Justice Foundation Deals With Introduction Civilization Emerson story Families, and Marriage We do not condone violence but argue that history shows it is more commonly and broadly propagated by denying civil liberties than controlled. Throughout this section you will find evidence of gross violations of the civil liberties of men and women in the name of controlling domestic violence. Present efforts, massively funded, brand all men as "batterers" and all women as "victims." Any thinking individual knows instinctively that violence in the family is a human problem, not a gender issue. And in most cases it takes two to tangle. Further, in Lifeline you will find that current laws act to deter citizens from seeking the help they need. Because the violent female-on-male side of the DV equation is deliberately obscured by radical feminists to further their political and funding agenda, for balance we provide information here on abused men and violence-prone women.

Back to Essays page How Many Domestic Violence Awareness Advocates Discriminate Against Women October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month but despite more than twenty years of consciousness raising and programs, in some key areas women are still being discriminated against. What is unusual, is that the discrimination is being supported by many awareness advocates. Twenty years ago, men and women killed their partners in roughly equal numbers, but now far fewer women are killing their male domestic partners. According to a comparison study by Dr. Daniel Nagin a public policy expert at Carnegie Mellon University Pittsburgh, there is a "substantial" difference in the rate of decline. He links this to improved economic circumstances and as importantly, legal advocacy programs for female domestic violence victims. Dr. Nagin told the New York Times (July 28, 1998): "The resources for women seem to be saving the men’s lives." Shouldn’t we at least try to put in place such programs for men, to see if they can be effective in preventing murders of women? Many domestic violence advocates resist this notion. Indeed, most reject any recognition at all for the fact that some women can be violent and controlling in their intimate relationships. The lowest official estimate puts it at 148,000 male victims a year and 838,000 female (National Criminal Victimization Survey-U.S. Justice Dept), while the highest, the National Family Violence Survey-funded by The National Institute of Mental Health-shows 1.8 million female victims and two million male.

The censored side of domestic violence
Published: Friday, April 15, 2005 To the Editor:
Even though April is sexual violence awareness month, much awareness-raising will be directed toward the issue of domestic violence in all its forms, especially this year when Clothesline Project, which addresses all issues of violence against women, and the Take Back The Night march are held in April.
Unfortunately, there is a side of domestic violence (DV), which is censored by our society: violence against men. Government estimates on the proportion of men among DV victims vary, but Violence Against Women Survey 2000 in the government documents, which states that 38 percent of victims of domestic violence or are men. I suspect many men at UNH have experience of family violence as children or are regularly slapped by their partners. Given the amount of male-bashing in our media where men are compared to pigs and dogs, it is not surprising that some women see men as deserving of that treatment. Even the MUB bookstore has a book on breakups, which teaches women how to hurt their ex-boyfriends!

32. MA-DV

38. What Can Men Do To Help Stop Domestic Violence
Take a vocal stand against domestic violence. men speaking out can have a powerful effect in helping change social norms that support and perpetuate abuse.
http://www.silcom.com/~paladin/madv/mencando.html
What can men do to help stop domestic violence?
Suggestions from the Family Violence Prevention Fund Men can play a crucial role in helping to stop domestic violence. Men are already an integral part of the community that supports and interacts with families dealing with violence. They are the majority of the judges, police officers, and doctors who work with families in crisis. Some men are the neighbors, friends, and family members who support victims by reaching out and lending a hand. And yet, it is sometimes hard for men to join in the fight against family violence. They may believe it is a women's issue, and that they are not supposed to get involved. But family violence is everyone's concern, and there are many opportunities for involving men in making communities safer. Men are critical to violence prevention efforts because men are more likely to listen to other men when it comes to the perpetration of domestic violence, and because fathers have enormous influence over the development of their children. Here are just a few ways men can make a difference:
  • Be role models to other men. Young men are uniquely positioned to reach out to other young men who are violent at home, to let them know, "You need help, and I want to help you. Your behavior is not acceptable."
