Dolphins: The Oracles of the Sea
Humans have always found dolphins to be enchanting creatures. Ever since the days of the first seafarers, they have been the subject of numerous works of art, literature, and myth. They are among the most intelligent of animals, as some species have brain-to-body mass ratios equal to that of a human being. They are also mammals, having evolved from land-faring creatures tens of millions of years ago. They are known for their extremely gregarious behavior. This site is designed to be an interactive, educational introduction into the study of these majestic creatures.
Evolution, Taxonomy, and Species
This part of the site includes detailed information on the evolutionary history of dolphins, the division of the dolphin family into different genera and species, and the individual characteristics of each species. The differences between and special facets of the various species of dolphins are discussed with photos and distribution maps made available. Oceanic dolphins, river dolphins, and small, toothed whales are all discussed along with the taxonomic differences between them.
Anatomy
This section includes information on the anatomical features of dolphins, emphasizing the special adaptations that dolphins and other marine mammals have made to survive in a fully aquatic existence. In addition, the method used for propulsion is discussed in detail.

[Preview-Index] [Links] [Report] There are actually two kinds of bottlenose dolphin (tusiops truncatus). One form is found near the coast in warmer water, the other form lives off shore in deeper and colder water. The off shore type is usually larger and has a slighly shorter beak. The one that is mostly seen and known (from shows and media) is the smaller coastal type. I have separated them here. Dolphins and Man.....Equals?
by Regina Blackstock
written May 1970
Nineteen centuries ago, Plutarch, a Greek moralist and biographer made this statement: "to the dolphin alone, beyond all other, nature has granted what the best philosophers seek: friendship for no advantage". In our own times Barbara Tufty made the comment "he [Dolphins] also exhibits a friendly willingness to cooperate with other earth creatures a rare attribute which another animal, Homo Sapiens, has not yet learned to do with any consistency". Apparently there is something quite impressive about Dolphins. Not only now, when we are learning so much more about them, but even in the year 62 AD! Outside of his striking friendliness, the Dolphin seems to have been blessed with a well developed sense of humor. Dolphins have been known to silently maneuver behind an unsuspecting pelican and snatch its tail feathers usually leaving the bird minus a few. Other pranks include grabbing unsuspecting fish by the tail, pulling them backward a few feet as well as bothering slow turtles by rolling them over and over. Once a dolphin was seen placing a piece of squid near a grouper's rock cranny. When the fish came out, the dolphin promptly snatched the bait away, leaving the puzzled fish behind. In 1965 Anthropologist Gregory Bateson made the discovery that dolphins live in social groups dominated by a leader. This tie is so strong that dolphins kept in total isolation will suffer ill health and possibly death. It has also been observed that dolphins frequently stroke each other with their flippers, hence, indicating that they require physical contact much like humans. A dolphin's skin is extremely delicate and easily injured by rough surfacesvery similar to human skin.

We have been operating dolphin tours in Kaikoura since the summer of 1989-90 and have developed a wealth of experience in introducing visitors to the delights of a wonderful marine environment, close to our beautiful coastline. There are some important facts you should know if you are contemplating a tour to the dolphins with us.
  • Our tours operate in the open ocean and are therefore subject to the elements of the open waters, swell and wind. Cancellations of tours can occur with very little warning.
  • Depending on the conditions of the day, sea conditions can result in clients becoming seasick while out at sea.

All dolphins are toothed whales belonging to the sub-order, odontocetes, of the order cetacea. As a group, dolphins are often referred to as "small" cetaceans, even though some of them are quite large, attaining lengths of over 20 feet. In addition, although the terms dolphins and porpoises are often used interchangeably, they really refer to two different types of animals.
  • Dolphins and Whales
Whales and Dolphins are marine animals. They live in oceans around the world. Whales and Dolphins come from the same family, CETACEA (sey-tay-sha) . They both breath from a blowhole located at the top of their head. Whales and dolpins are mammals.
  • What is a Dolphin? All dolphins, porpoises, and whales belong to the order Cetacea. They are often called cetaceans. Scientists group most dolphins (31 species) in the family Delphinidae, part of the suborder Odontoceti, or toothed whales. Delphinids include such well known dolphins as bottlenose dolphins and common dolphins as well as killer whales and pilot whales.

Whales and Dolphins are marine animals. They live in oceans around the world. Whales and Dolphins come from the same family, CETACEA (sey-tay-sha) . They both breath from a blowhole located at the top of their head. Whales and dolpins are mammals. They are mammals because they have lungs not gills, they have hair not scales , and they also have give live birth and don't lay eggs. There are only about 80 kinds of whales and dolphins that we know of right now.
    Whales
Whales are very large animals. They can grow up to 100 ft. or more in length. They can weigh up to 200 tons or more. Whales live in families called pods. These pods vary in numbers and consist of family members and family friends. Whales live in these families their whole life. Group living is safer when other whales or sharks attack. It also makes it easier to find food. Whales are always migrating. They travel to find food, breed and have young. Whales do not have eyelids. They rely on thick oily tears to protect their eyes. Whales hear from little holes behind their eyes. Whales talk to each other by making high pitched sounds like whistles, clicks, squeaks, rattles, and groans.
