Throughout history, dolls have been used as objects or symbols of religious worship, as burial objects, or as children's playthings. These objects have typically been constructed from clay minerals, wood, leather, bone, and ivory. While dolls were once used in religious worship and burial rituals, the 19th century saw the beginning of the industrial production of dolls. Doll's heads came to be made from pottery or porcelain, while the bodies were constructed of cloth or leather. Most recently, dolls have grown immensely popular, with "Barbie" surfacing in the 1960s, "Cabbage Patch Kids" coming into the mainstream in the mid-1980s, and dolls fashioned after television shows and movies being a hit in the 1990s. Dollmaking for the First Time®

Summary
Cloth dolls and wooden dolls; life-size figures and those as small as clothespins; dolls as ornaments and a complete set of dolls, like a miniature family: oh, what a beautiful doll you can make with this well-illustrated guide at your side. As with all the acclaimed For the First Time books, it teaches the basics, from preparing the patterns to painting the face and styling the hair. The techniques unspool in an easy-to-follow question and answer form —How do I make a simple cloth doll? How do I make a doll with button-on joints? — accompanied by a project. Above all, every page encourages crafters to break the rules, use their imagination, and find ways of making each doll special and personal.

Wabi Sabi Threads
Thoughts on doll making, fiber arts, and creativity.
Catching up with some blogs!
Being away from the net this last week I have been unable to read my fav blogs. Of course my first visit was for Ervilha's Blog.
At Ervilha I read about two wonderful projects in wich I'll try to participate: One is about making and donating a doll for Unicef France , the other is for a Portuguese Artist who is making a collaborative project with felt pieces from all over the world. Please follow the links to read about them. Maybe you can also participate.

A Ervilha Cor de Rosa
I spent some time at A Ervilha Cor de Rosa a wonderful weblog by Rosa Pomar, a portuguese dollmaker. The only thing that I don't like about her blog is that it is in Portuguese.. Some words are similar to Spanish words so I try to read it. I keep missing the meaning of the posts. Anyway the blog is wonderful. Is full of pictures of Rosa's Art (Dolls, Illustrations, Knitting...) and links to many pages (mostly in English). So it's well worth the visit. I have also just draw a dollpattern. I want it to be a doll that once sewn and stuffed would be finished. Although you can always embellish it. I can't work on the pattern this weekend so I don't know if it will work. I hope that I can give it a try next week.
