Dollmaker interview - Stephania Morgante of Cagliari, Italy
Q. What kinds of dolls do you make? A.
Italian...? I don't know; Italians tell me that I make American dolls and the Americans say that I create Italian-style dolls. I like to think that my dolls are very international. Mostly, I like to create unusual effects with materials, especially papier-mache. For example, my Pinocchio figure isn't really made of wood; he's papier-mache. I've also developed a porcelain effect with papier-maché. And, I love materials of all kinds. They spark my imagination. I love weldments in copper, I love essential oils and terracotta, spices, leaves, beads, stones, bells, and... anything that piques my curiosity! Last but not least, I love my dolls to have a "lack of perfection." You will never see symmetry in my dolls. For example, see my cloth bears. One of my recent teddy bears, Ichnusa , won First Prize (Undressed Bears category) in the 2004 Italian Festival of Teddy Bears.

Doll Making as a Spiritual Journey
    by Kay Marie Porterfield
At first I approached figure making tentatively. I was intimidated by the art dolls I saw on websites and in books, mystified at how people made such powerful and beautiful objects. For most of my life I used words to express my thoughts and feelings, and I was overwhelmed by the notion of turning clay into tiny hands and feet. The craft of making faces eluded me. Nonetheless, I pulled my bead stash from the closet and began collecting scraps of interesting material and blocks of polymer clay. For months I stumbled over the pile of supplies trying to ignore what clearly was a call. I was a writer, not an artist I told myself. Finally, I realized that just because I chose to ignore the call, didn’t mean it was going to go away. The only way to remove this stumbling block was to slowly use the beads, cloth and clay until they were gone. Little did I know that the supply would grow instead of shrink and that the dolls would become my spirit teachers. During a year of allowing figures to emerge, I became aware that words alone can sometimes stand in the way of self knowledge and spiritual growth.

    96. Dollmaking Journey Two

    http://www.kporterfield.com/figures/figures2.html
Doll Making as a Spiritual Journey Part Two
Sophia is my second try at expressing a vision that was given to me when I lived in South Dakota. The first was a shrine, but didn’t feel that I had captured the spirit of my experience. With beads, clay, and cloth I show all-wise Moon/Sophia rising over Bear Butte. As I worked on her, I felt her essence emerging beneath my fingers. Once again, I heard her message.
Some of the first crude faces I made from polymer clay inspired me to make Madonna and Child. Frustrated with patterns, I cut a freeform shape out of Ultrasuede from the world's ugliest suit that I bought for a quarter at a thrift store. Somewhere in the middle of the beading I forgot to be self-conscious and started having fun. This icon doll is a nurturer and reminded me to notice grace in the creative process.
Brother Sun's middle name is Serendipity. I found that if I baked polymer clay too long it turned brown. I liked the way that looked, so I began deliberately breaking the rules. There are not accidents. This is the lesson Brother Sun carried into the world. His motto comes from the old Nike commercial - just do it! He asked for a well-done face and a beaded coat of light and heat. How could I refuse?
Moon Woman is reflective. She carries a feminine energy, just as powerful as the Sun's, even if it isn't as flashy. She doesn't throw her weight around, but she is strong enough to pull the tides and control the timing of women's moon cycles. Her teaching is to pay attention to my creative cycles, and that times of quiet reflection are essential.

This month we are pleased to present... Noreen Crone-Findlay
"Human beings have an amazing ability to heal themselves, physically, emotionally and spiritually." So states Noreen Crone-Findlay in the introduction to her book Soul Mate Dolls: Dollmaking as a Healing Art , published by Krause Publications. She goes on to say, "When there is a wound in the heart or soul, a wonderful way to heal it is to find a soul mate and embark on a journey of creativity. That's what this book is all about: playing with images and metaphors, while paying attention to how the processes work on a deeper level." Noreen's book is filled with projects that allow one to have an enormous amount of fun with the creative process while at the same time questing for new insights into one's life. Soul Mate Dolls
    Dollmaking as a Healing Art
    By Noreen Crone-Findlay
    Published by Krause Publications
Noreen is a fiber artist who loves exploring unusual techniques, materials and mediums in her designing and dollmaking. She loves teaching people about how dollmaking can be a magical art, which can inspire, heal and delight. In her workshops, she endeavors to show that these dolls can be special "friends of the heart and imagination," which is why she calls this process Soul Mate Dollmaking. She uses both concrete and abstract tools to make her point; the primary abstract tool she uses is metaphor. Noreen explains, "Metaphors create pictures with words. On a deeper level, they build bridges by forming connections that can illuminate and enlighten us. They help us turn stumbling blocks into stepping stones."
