67. Noreen Crone-Findlay, Soul Mate Dolls: Dollmaking As A Healing Art
dollmaking as a Healing Art (Krause, 2000) which, for a book that s subtitled dollmaking as a Healing Art, is probably a standard thing.

Noreen Crone-Findlay,
Soul Mate Dolls:
Dollmaking as a Healing Art

(Krause, 2000)
On one of the art lists I'm on, there's been a lot of stir over this book. How it helped people break through some creative blocks. How it made them want to play with dolls. How it was great for any artist, not just a dollmaker. So, never being one to buck the crowd, I had to have it. I picked it up through Amazon.com and anxiously awaited its arrival. I've always received good advice from my friends on-list, and I didn't think this would be any different. Boy, was I wrong. I appreciate this book on some kind of an intellectual level. There's projects enough to take a good year of creative puttering time. Projects like the Pah Shaw Soul Mate Doll, the Yes! and No! Soul Mate Dolls, and the Millenium Soul Mate Doll, along with roughly forty other project dolls. And it's not only dolls there's also little "props" for the dolls, some knitting projects and weaving projects. If a person was to do all of the projects listed, they would easily have a thousand hours worth of entertainment for the roughly $22 they spent. I also like how it's separated into chapters, with "types" of dolls scattered across those chapters, rather than, say, all the cloth dolls in one section, all the paper dolls in another. Instead, it's separated into types of healing, which, for a book that's subtitled

Thank you for inquiring about our SOLID GLASS PAPERWEIGHT EYES, used in the making of porcelain dolls . Glass is Classic
The subtle shades of our icy winter blues, the warm tones of out ethnic browns, the nuances of the grays, greens and violets, gives your doll "expression" and "character". Every time you look at your precious creation, the paperweight eyes will sparkle and ENHANCE the sheer beauty of your labor-of-love..........your doll.
You have laboriously made and hand painted the face, fashioned the dress of the finest materials and lace, purchased or made the appropriate wig and leather shoes and to finish her with eyes that are machine made acrylic, does not do justice to your craft. Plaster Gauze Figures

From Jeryl: One of my 4th grade students' favorites involves the people you make out of tinfoil. But then we go on and wrap the whole person with masking tape, paint with acrylic paints and dress, add hair, props etc.. They are mounted on scrap matt board with more details. When our theme was sports, they added balls and nets, etc... or drew the playing field. Last year when our theme was Around the World - we had some hilarious Sumo wrestlers, hula dancers, African tribal warriors etc See Handout Fashion Unit From Barbara Yalof (for fifth grade): The dressed foil dolls are going down the runway. Barbara slit a snake like path in the foam core "floor" so the dolls can move along the runway attached by a stick. Plaster Gauze Figures From Mary Jane Hadley Mary Jane began this unit with aluminum foil figures. Once the students had their pose, they covered with small pieces of plaster gauze. Figures were finished with tissue paper and gloss medium. It is best to use bleed resistant tissue paper. Props were made to add to the figures. Figures and props were glued to painted wood bases. For a more secure mount, a hole (approximately 1/8" - whatever size wire you are using) can be drilled into the leg and wood base (or arm as in the second example) and a wire inserted before gluing (pieces of coat hanger wire works for this step). Mary Jane used a nail (with head cut off) to support some of the figures. These could also be begun with a wire armature - then padded with foil.

Unit: Dollmaking - Storytelling - Sculpture - fashion design - Careers
Lesson Plan: Sculpy dolls
Grade level: Middle school thru high school (with parent help for sewing for middle school)
Tips from Charlene:
Remember to tell your students " Jump and a net shall appear". Never be
afraid to try something new. " Getting started is the most difficult part of anything new. The
greatest obstacle is the fear of failure. Once you are able to take that
risk and begin you have already begun to succeed."
I have always loved making dolls . Over the years I have made them out of many different kinds of materials. Now that I have found Polymer clay I'm really hooked. I also have a great love of working with kids with disabilities. I think art is wonderful for those kids .
This fairy head by Charlene Woeckener is just being made. This is only the beginning. For some How to's see Marika Spijkers
