Over the years LAA has provided food, shelter, and new homes for countless dogs and cats. Apart from the animals which have been abandoned, the most common reasons for pets needing care are broken homes, accommodation problems and the death of their owner. Whatever the reason, LAA is committed to providing the animals with the care and sanctuary they need, and for as long as they need it.
LAA operates a non-euthanasia policy and animals are only put to sleep on veterinary advice. Most people recognise the need for Animal Rescue Centres to be efficiently run with caring policies. The work of LAA is based on three prime objectives: To provide sanctuary and a second start to unwanted and homeless pets To reunite lost pets with their owners through its Petfinder Service operated in conjunction with BBC Radio Leicester To help owners keep their pets by providing temporary accommodation when space permits Go to top

LAA do not receive any statutory funding but instead rely heavily on fund raising events and of course much needed donations. How Dogs Think
A Non-Verbal Link to Canine Communication
The following article by William E. Campbell was first published by Dogworld magazine. It is presented here to convey the concepts behind Campbell's humane, non-punishment systems for correcting problem behavior in pet animals. Please feel free to copy the article and use it as a means of spreading the word for a more enlightened approach to pet animal ownership. If you use it in a club publication, newspaper or magazine, etc., please mention it also appears in "Behavior Problems in Dogs," ( 1995, Mosby Yearbook Publishers) and "Owner's Guide to Better Behavior in Dogs," (1995, Alpine Publishers). See Campbell's Pet Behavior Resources on the Web. Contents Introduction Understanding Non-Verbal Thinking Evidence of Imagery Some Human Examples ... HomeVet Introduction Have you ever seen a device or a program designed to correct a dog behavior problem that explained how smart dogs are and how they think? Most plans or gadgets enable owners, literally, to declare war on their hapless pets. Little or no concern is afforded to what the dogs happen to think about them. In fact, the implication is that dogs don't think at all ... either they just react to external stimuli like robots , or respond according to genetically controlled "drives." Dogs are rarely credited with the ability to solve a problem mentally; to analyze a situation; imagine ways to manipulate or control it, then take a pre-planned course of action toward a goal that was preconceived in the dog's mind. In short, the dog is considered a real dummy, then treated like a dummy. But this concept is not correct. Dogs are smart. They can, and usually do, think rings around their owners. And they can do it because most owners have never learned how to think like a dog.

FEATURED PRODUCT:
Flea Trap
The Flea Trap works by catching adult fleas that are looking for a pet to infest. The light, heat and infra-red rays from the light bulb are strong attractants for fleas. The fleas jump on the sticky pad. Catching one female flea may prevent 200 or more eggs from being laid. The flea trap will reduce the number of fleas where ever it is used. Under certain conditions, it will also eliminate fleas.
Note: Fleas on your pet are unlikely to leave and go to the trap. For better results, we recommend you use a flea comb or flea soap to remove fleas from your pet.
Flea Trap by Spring Star features:
  • Non-toxic, environmentally friendly
  • Catches 4 times more fleas than older-style traps
  • Independently tested
  • Ready to use - no assembly required
  • Meets or exceeds UL
  • Lasts for years
  • One year warranty
For more details about combatting fleas safely and naturally, please see our flea page. Flea Trap - Comes with one capture pad. OUR PRICE: $14.99 QTY: Flea Trap Capture Pads - Three capture pads per pack. Each pad lasts approximately three months. OUR PRICE: $6.49

Medications
Because they are so much smaller than we are, our companion animals need to be kept away from all medications. Do not give any of your medications to a pet. That includes over-the-counter medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, cough or cold medicines, and decongestants. Pain killers, cold medicines, anti-cancer drugs, anti-depressants, vitamins, and diet pills are all examples of human medications that can be lethal to animals, even in small doses. Please consult your veterinarian. Household Items
Common household items that can be lethal to an animal are mothballs, potpourri oils, coffee grounds, homemade play dough, fabric softener sheets, dishwashing detergent, batteries, cigarettes, and alcoholic drinks.
