Siti Robitu, 21, describes a recent argument she had with her family over the circumcision of her four-year old daughter. "My father, my mother - they all cried," she said. "They wanted my daughter to be circumcised. I was against it."

West Africa, Great Lakes Missions; Monitors Kosovo, East Timor Progress
In the shadow of the 11 September attacks on the United States, terrorism and the question of Afghanistan loomed over the Security Council's agenda in 2001.  Throughout the year, however, the Council also focused on a global range of unstable situations, notably the long-term conflicts in Africa and the continuing violence in the Middle East.  In addition, the significant progress in Kosovo and East Timor was closely monitored.
The Council once again demonstrated its interest in holding open debates on issues that have an impact on global peace and security.  This year, the discussions addressed:  civilians in armed conflict; women, peace and security; small arms and light weapons; conflict prevention; and HIV/AIDS.
On the day after the terrorist attacks, members broke tradition by standing in unison to adopt a resolution condemning them, expressing sympathy with families of the victims and the host country.  Council members also expressed their readiness to combat all forms of terrorism in accordance with Charter responsibilities.

GIs enhancing Nigeriens' field medical skills
Flintlock 05 building rapport between U.S., African soldiers
TAHOUA, Niger — A soldier quizzed his students: Why do we put dressing on an injury? What happens if we tie the dressing too tight? Sometimes what students learn now is forgotten later. “The next group who visits the area will come and see if this training has stuck,” said Dr. (Maj.) Imad Haque. “Based on what I’ve seen I’m very confident.” Haque, a team leader with the 160th Forward Surgical Team, and other U.S. troops trained about 300 Nigerien soldiers Friday as part of Flintlock 05, a seven-nation exercise to train African troops and build U.S.-African rapport. The Nigerien soldiers were confident. They’d already been trained by U.S. Marines and answered the questions that were posed.

Kiwanis International Update 2005:
To Sustain Universal Salt Iodization
BY EYJOLFUR “EDDIE” SIGURDSSON EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, KIWANIS INTERNATIONAL AND KIWANIS INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT 1995–1996 he commitment of Kiwanis International to help eliminate iodine deficiency disorders in the world did not happen overnight. Founded in 1915, Kiwanis today is a worldwide association of more than 8,000 clubs and 280,000 members. The Kiwanis clubs actually remained limited to the United States and Canada until 1962 and Kiwanis service has always been focused on the local community. Since 1962, Kiwanis has chartered clubs in 92 additional nations. But until 1994, all Kiwanis service remained local service. The Kiwanis Club of Kansas City served in Kansas City, while the Kiwanis Club of Vienna, Austria served mostly in Vienna. Kiwanis International was a worldwide organization without a worldwide mission. Then Kiwanis leaders recognized the opportunity of a worldwide service project which could target an important need of children and strengthen the organization by giving Kiwanians in every nation a common goal and shared experience. A global project would also raise the visibility of Kiwanis International as an organization that serves the world’s children and its network of partners could amplify the impact and reach of Kiwanis service.

TEST INFO: The Test Candidates
Kea
Kea is a component of the New Zealand Digital Library , designed for automatically extracting keywords/keyphrases from text documents. Briefly, it is a naive Bayesian classifier trained on a document/author-keyword corpus.
Turney's Keyphrase Extractor
Extractor is a commercial product which attempts to directly mimic the authors selection of keywords by comparing its results to the authors. It uses a complex gentic algorithm to learn the paremeters of keyphrases.
Dublin Core Metadata Editor
The Dublin Core is a specification of a small set of metadata elements for describing information resources: RFC 2731. The Dublin Core Metadata Editor is a service to provide this data from processed pages for the benefit of catalogers. The "subject or keywords" results were extracted for test comparisons.
PhraseRate
PhraseRate was designed to provide a list of keyphrases from a web page that would aid librarians in selecting keywords for the page. As such, it was relieved from the responsibility of precision in it's selection of keywords. Instead, it focuses more on briefly imparting a sense of a web page, as well as including predominate keywords for librarian selection.
While these programs all have concerns about keywords/keyphrases, their intended utilization and integration have induced distinct specializations which are apparent in their responses.

Posted By: Paul (asi130323-3.gw.connect.com.au) Date: Sunday, 27 July 2003, at 11:45 p.m. Hi all, Here's a brief overview of the cooper test... Test designed to determine your VO2 Max, or your body's ability to take in/deliver and use oxygenated blood in 1 minute. A la Legion, you get yourself a 400m track, a stopwatch and someone who 'wants' to run. Start the timer, set em off running and then work out how far they ran in 12mins... the mind boggles... then you get a nice little score that you can taunt your missus/friends etc with because you can cane their asses on the jogging rink. PS, don't spend to long on the linked site, it's preachiness and excessive cautionary notes/rants/convolution etc. are enough to anger any normal person... http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/vo2max.htm The Cooper Endurance VO2max Test Go Straight To The VO2max Calculator!

Home Archives Births Business ... Weather July 8, 2004 Front Page Mill levy hike for road care likely on ballot By Tom Carosello Staff Writer Would you be willing to pay higher taxes in exchange for better road maintenance in Archuleta County? Based on actions taken this week by the county board of commissioners, it's a question county residents will likely be asked to consider when stepping to the polls during the Nov. 2 General Election. At the request of Bill Steele, county administrator, the board unanimously carried a motion instructing staff to finalize information necessary to present the question of a mill levy increase, including the resulting scenarios of a "yes" or "no" vote, for presentation to the board and public at a later date. According to Steele, that presentation "of what to expect" with regard to future county road maintenance policies - whether or not a potential mill levy is approved - will likely occur within the next six weeks. The question of a mill levy increase related to the betterment of county roadways has been placed on the ballot, and voted down, in the past. What will make this year's attempt different, said Steele, is the notion that "we are going to do our absolute best to put as much on the table in front of the voters as possible."

The decision to join is rarely made on the spur of the moment - at very least it has been in the back of the "engage volontaire 's " (recruit's) mind for some time - if not History of the French Foreign Legion. Formation: 9' March 1831. The French Foreign Legion was formed on the 9 of March 1831. It's authority was signed by Louis-Philippe - the King of France. His position as King was weakening and the Legion was readily formed in order that Louis- Philippe could maintain his position on the throne. The oAicers were gathered in from Napoleon's Grande Armee and the men were recruited from Italy, Spain, Switzerland and other European countries. There were Back to top also some Frenchmen recruits who were trying to escape the attention of their local Police. Sebastopol 1853 - 1856. It was the aim of France to assist Turkey in their fight to win over free passage of the Black Sea to the Mediterranean. After a brief victory the 1 ere and 2eme RE's final attempt to win the town of Sebastopol ended in a blockade which lasted a year. After suffering a year of horrendous weather and illness, the Legion could wait no longer and attempted to take the town but failed badly and took heavy casulaties. They tried again, but it was not until their third attempt on the 8 September 1855 that they succeeded.
