Dumais takes last shot at Olympic diving medal
By Beth Harris
ASSOCIATED PRESS 8:59 a.m. August 23, 2004 Dumais was in fifth place after Monday's 3-meter springboard preliminaries, trailing leader Alexandre Despatie of Canada. Dumais and his older brother, Justin, were second going into the final round of last week's synchronized springboard competition. China's duo was first, but amazingly scored zero points, leaving the door open for the siblings. But they failed to take advantage, missing their tandem dive and winding up sixth. "I wanted to make sure that didn't happen again," said Troy, who totaled 452.76 points Monday. He finished sixth on springboard four years ago. "My goal was rebounding from the synchro," Dumais said. "I wanted to forget about it and move on and I did that." Despatie, the first Canadian to win a world title on the 10-meter platform last year, led the way with 517.59 points. Peng Bo of China was second with 495.45, Russia's Alexander Dobroskok was third with 489.75, and Japan's Ken Terauchi was fourth with 456.15. The United States had mixed results in an event that Americans have won 15 out of 17 Olympics from 1920 to 1992. Mark Lenzi won a bronze in 1996, but the Americans were then shut out in Sydney.

The Olympic Games:
Summer 2004 in Athens, Greece

Athens, Greece, will host the 2004 Summer Olympics. For information on Greece, click here . For a page on Greece's flag, click here The Games of the XXVIII Olympiad are being held in Athens, Greece. The opening ceremonies are on August 13, 2004. The closing ceremonies are on Sunday, August 29, 2004. The Ancient Olympics The ancient Greeks dedicated the Olympic Games to the god Zeus. The original games were held on the plain of Olympia in Peloponnesos, Greece. The Greeks held the first Olympic games in the year 776 BC (over 2700 years ago), and had only one event, a sprint (a short run that was called the "stade"). The race was run by men who competed in the nude. A wreath of olive branches was placed on the winner's head (in Greek, this is called a kotinos). The olive tree was the sacred tree of Athens, Greece. Women were neither allowed to compete in the games nor to watch them, because the games were dedicated to Zeus and were therefore meant for men.

Watch my masterclass Broadband Modem I've teamed up with Kim White, who's the Junior Olympic Programme manager for British diving, to give you a beginner's guide to making a splash. Find out more about Nick here My top tips for becoming a diving star:
  • Think positive! It's really important to have the right attitude. Diving can be hard - especially when you're a beginner - but perseverance will pay off
  • Listen to your teacher or coach. They know what they're talking about and they're there to help you
  • Make sure you eat well. I like to eat pasta, chicken, fruit and vegetables. You can treat yourself every now and then, but on the whole try and eat healthily

My Olympics
Citius Fortius Altius Revisited
With the 2004 Olympics about to begin, I have been thinking about the large number of sports that make up the Olympics. There are too many sports, and a lot of them are stupid. For example, baseball and softball are Olympic sports, and synchronised swimming is ridiculed because it is an art-form rather than a sport. So I have decided to get rid of the stupid sports from the Olympics, and I have decided that removing all sports that do not conform to the Olympic Ideals swifter, stronger, higher is a good place to start. I use these ideals as the basis of removing sports and adding new sports to my Olympic games.
Sports to Remove
Before I start removing sports from my Olympics, I can simplify the Ideals by removing higher , as it is really similar to swifter. I can now throw out all sports that do not fit the two Ieals. However, this does not leave us many sports, so I will keep all sports that can be used to kill people, so I will rewrite the Ideals to read swifter, stronger deadlier

http://www.worldwideaquatics.com/olympics/aboutdiving.htm
Read about Synchronized Diving HISTORICAL OVERVIEW OF DIVING
By Dr. Ron O'Brien, U.S. Diving National Technical Director The origin of fancy diving goes as far back as the 17th century in connection with the great gymnastic movement in Germany and Sweden. In the summertime, gymnasts moved their equipment to the beaches, and acrobatics over the water became a part of their activities. Diving, then, is more related to gymnastics than to swimming. However, since swimming and diving both use a water medium, they have naturally become linked. Platform diving (33 feet high) achieved international notice in the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis when it was included as an event on the men's swimming program. Springboard diving was added for the 1908 Games in London. Women's diving was slower in being accepted. It was not until 1912 that plain high diving was included in the Olympics, and 1920 that the first women's springboard contest was conducted. Fancy high diving for women came into being in 1928 internationally. As could be expected, Germany and Sweden dominated the early competition. It wasn't until 1920 that the United States reached worldwide prominence in diving by winning three of the gold medals in the Olympics (men's and women's springboard and men's platform events). From that time through 1992, the United States has been the world leader in diving. The total count is 46 of 75 Olympic gold medals for the United States.

Competition phases At the Olympic Games and World Championships there are three competition phases: a preliminary, a semi–final and a final. 3m springboard events In the 3m springboard events, athletes perform dives that are chosen among the five different dive groups: front, back, reverse, inward and twisting dives. The competition phases sequence for the 3m springboard events is as follows: Preliminaries
The men’s 3m preliminary competition consists of six dives without limitations in the degree of difficulty; there is one dive out of each group (front, back, reverse, inward and twisting dives) and an additional one from any group. The women’s 3m preliminary competition consists of five dives out of each dive groups, without limitations in the degree of difficulty. The 18 best divers (for men or women) advance to the semi-final. Semi-finals
In the semi-finals the divers compete in reverse order of their ranking determined by the total scores at the end of the preliminary competitions. The 3m semi-final competition for both men and women consists of five dives from different groups, the total degree of difficulty of which does not exceed 9.5. If there is a tie for 18th place in the preliminary competition or 12th place in the semi-final competition, all divers who have tied compete in the respective competition. The 12 best divers (for men or women) advance to the final.
