On Campus Interview Series: Diving for Olympic Gold
By Joseph Tesvic (OC), Sports Editor Published: Monday, October 18, 2004 Michael Murphy in action
Dual Olympian Michael Murphy relaxes in The Grille
The average Australian is usually in possession of some sort of athletic prowess, or at least a strong love of sports. However, this week's featured athlete takes Australian sporting prowess to another level. A level somewhere above the stratosphere. Softly spoken, humble and erudite, you wouldn't immediately pick Michael Murphy (NB) as an international diving superstar. But he is. His two Olympic appearances garnered him two top-six finishes. He also won Commonwealth Games and World Junior Championship Gold Medals. And a mind-blowing 42 national titles! Michael hails from Brisbane, loves to play guitar, watch sports, and hang out with family and friends. It was a pleasure to catch up with him in The Grille and hear some tales of his Olympic Diving career.
Fact File: Michael 'Pog' Murphy
Height: 5 feet 10 inches
Weight: 176 pounds
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Brown
Marital Status: Married

By: Aida Maria Quintana
Are you ready to get wet? Because for the first time in its history, FINA has decided to hold its most important event in North America. It has chosen Montréal to showcase this prestigious competition. For the city, the region, and the entire province, MONTRÉAL 2005 is the largest gathering of young athletes since the 1976 Olympic Games, with 160 countries and over 2,000 trainers.
A great number of stars will be in action this summer in Montreal at the XI Fina World Championships, despite this being a pre-Olympic year.
Michael Phelps and Pieter van den Hoogenband in the swimming events, divers Dmitri Sautin and Chantelle Newbery, the Russian synchronized swimming team and the Hungarian and Italian water-polo teams are expected to offer showcase performances. Spectators coming to Ste-Hélène and Notre-Dame Islands, July 17 to 31 are sure to see a great display of talent. These are only some athletes that will be seen at our own park Jean Drapeau.
These are the roots of the five events that will be in these championships:
SWIMMING:
Three swimming events were part of the program for the first Olympic Games in 1896. There were no rules, no regulations, and universal definitions were not yet established. Some of the events rapidly disappeared, like underwater swimming. For certain races, swimmers were transported by boat into the ocean and had to swim to shore.

Banners were prominently displayed for ChevronTexaco, event sponsor, at the FINA Grand Prix Diving Competition. (photo by Trisha Roché) HOUSTON, June 5, 2003 On her final effort, 2000 Olympic gold medalist Laura Wilkinson completed a dive 2.5 backward somersaults and 1.5 twists in the pike position to win second place at the FINA (Federation Internationale de Natation) Diving Grand Prix Meet in The Woodlands, Texas, a suburb of Houston. Without ChevronTexaco's sponsorship of the competition, held at The Woodlands Athletic Center, it's likely that few diving fans would have been able to see Wilkinson's dive, the highest scored in the 10-meter platform finals. Nor would they have seen the winner of the event, Olympic hopeful Loudy Tourky from Australia. "In one word, ChevronTexaco's sponsorship meant everything," said Roger Bourland, the meet's director. "Without the generous support of ChevronTexaco, we wouldn't even have been able to erect bleachers for fans to view the competition." Ray Wilcox, vice president of ChevronTexaco and president of North America Upstream, welcomed the competition's 125 world-class divers from 23 countries during the meet's opening ceremonies. In addition, Jim Blackwell, director of the Southern Africa business unit, along with Melody Meyer, vice president of North America Upstream's Mid-Continent business unit; Greg Vesey, president of ChevronTexaco Technology Ventures; and Hugh Connett, president of Bridgeline Holdings, a ChevronTexaco joint venture natural gas pipeline and marketing company; presented awards and straw cowboy hats to the winners.

Reilly (1916- 1957), Otto H. Hill (1957-1961), Frank W. Elm (1961-1993), Elizabeth Blau (1993-1996), Rick Simpson (1996-1997), and Chuck Warner (1997-present). Rutgers Swimming has enjoyed a proud history of success, achievement, and one of the finest sports traditions "On the Banks." Compiled after researching years of Scarlet yearbooks and Targums, this history is only a limited glimpse into the 82-year old tradition and recognizes only a very few of the hundreds of athletes who trained, competed, and contributed to the fine tradition of Rutgers Swimming.

Sixteen Years in Sixteen Seconds will inspire all who read it.
"Starred Review", BOOKLIST "Starred Review", KIRKUS REVIEWS
"Handsomely illustrated and compassionately written without sentimentality, this picture book biography exemplifies what this genre should be: humanizing and meaningful. In 1932, 12-year-old Sammy Lee could only swim in the public pool on Wednesdays, the only day open to people of color, and Sammy was Korean American. Torn between his dream of diving and his father's urging him to become a doctor, Sammy managed to achieve both, despite barriers and prejudice, and was the first Asian American to win an Olympic gold medal. Scratchboard-style, sepia-toned paintings in wax covered acrylics create a textured effect both visually and contextually. The title refers to the 16 years he trained for the 16 seconds it took to perform his winning dive. This hero's inspirational story demonstrates determination and dedication by a man who never gave up and is still an active athlete today at the age of 84. "
