Posted: Friday September 29, 2000 8:15 AM Updated: Thursday November 09, 2000 12:30 PM SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) - On Thursday, Fu Mingxia proved that after two years of retirement she can still dive, winning her fifth Olympic medal. Burned out after the rigors of training for the Atlanta Olympics four years ago, where she swept the platform and springboard titles, Fu said goodbye to diving. She took up economics management at college, made new friends and put on pounds. But time refreshed her and brought a change of mind. Her college set up a diving club and "friends asked me: 'Do you think you can still dive?'" she said. Fu decided to find out. Although she says her first platform dive was scary, the rust came off quicker than expected. Within months, she was somersaulting and twisting once again. She likened it to learning how to bicycle: "The more you ride, the smoother you become. That's the feeling." "In fact, I still really liked diving, I fought for about half a year and then decided to come back," she said.

    Double 10,00?
The very first diver who got a 10,00 was Pete Desjardins (VS, he was born in Canada) by the 3m diving in 1928. Almost everybody expected that he won at two parts of diving, 3m diving and 10m plank), but an Egyptenian was better. He was the winner because he had better points, but that was recalled by the Americans because Desjardins had higher placingnumbers. Archery Diving Hockey Shooting Track-and-field Basketball ... Four sports that all happen in water; swimming, water polo, synchronised swimming and diving. In Athens all the aquatic events are taking place in the same venue, the first time this has happened. Some controversy surrounds the aquatics venue though as it hasn't been finished. The builders didn't have time to put a roof over it, so swimmers and spectators will get very warm at the Games. Everyone knows how the swimming works, although swimmers will have to be wary as if they make a single false start in their event they will be disqualified. Diving takes place from a series of high boards, with judges scoring on the difficulty of the dive and the skill of completing it. Synchronised swimming sees pairs or groups of swimmers 'dance' to music. They must complete the complicated moves at the same time to score well. In water polo swimmers try and throw the ball into a goal, a bit like football. Amazingly, players aren't allowed to touch the sides or the bottom of the pool during the game, so they have to keep treading water. Who are the British hopes for Athens?

The question of how many sports are included in the Olympics is a bit tricky, because the International Olympic Committee doesn't define a sport in quite the same way that most people do. The IOC recognizes a hierarchy of sports, disciplines, and events. To the IOC, a sport is represented by a single international governing body. To look at a concrete example, most people would say that swimming, diving, synchronised swimming, and water polo are four separate sports. However, the international governing body for all three is the Federation Internationale de Natation. In Olympic terms, therefore, the sport is aquatics. Swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, and water polo are aquatics disciplines. An event, in Olympic terms, is any competition for which medals are awarded. So men's platform diving is an event, diving is the discipline, and aquatics is the sport. It should be noted that, for many sports, the sport is also the discipline. That's true, for example, of badminton, baseball, and basketball. It's not true of archery, though; the sport is archery and the discipline is target archery. Target archery happens to be the only archery discipline included in the Olympics, but the International Archery Federation also governs competition in field archery and ski archery, which are considered separate disciplines.

    History
Springboard diving was added in 1908 and platform diving in 1912, when the combined event was dropped. Women's platform diving was also added in 1912, followed by women's springboard diving in 1920. From 1912 through 1928, divers were ranked by ordinals; that is, the places assigned them by the judges. Thus, if there were three judges and a diver was ranked first by two and second by one, that diver's score would be 4 (1+1+2). A diver with a lower point score but higher ordinals could therefore win the gold medal. Since 1932, divers have been ranked by the total number of points for all their dives. The score for a dive is the score awarded by the judges, on a scale from to 6, multiplied by the dive's degree of difficulty. The degree of difficulty ranges from a low of 1.2 to a high of 3.6. The newest discipline, synchronized diving, became an Olympic event in 2000.
