China Gets Two More Titles in Diving and Taekwondo, Gold Tally Rises to 28
Chen Zhong Wins Women's 67kg Taekwondo Gold Medal China put the last diving gold and silver in the 27th Olympic Games in its bag on Saturday in Sydney, when Tian Liang and Hu Jia swept aside defending champion Dmitri Saoutine of Russia and other rivals in the final.
The gold, the fifth China grabbed during the Games, made China's gold tally at the medal tally up to 28, a new record in Chinese Olympic history. China obtained 16 golds at both the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta games.
Minutes before the diving final, Chen Zhong outperformed Matalia Ivalova of Russia 8-3 in the women's over 67 kg taekwondo final. Twenty-one-year-old Tian Liang totalled 724.53 points from the semi-final and final, as compared to the silver medallist Hu Jia's 713.55 points, and the bronze medellist Saoutine's 679.26 points. Tian Liang Wins Men's Platform Gold The Chinese have collected 10 diving medals, five of them gold. China's ability to claim five of the eight golds on offer has once more proved the country's dominating superiority in the diving sport.

Diving Veterans Ready for More Gold
Though their younger teammates had already tagged themselves as serious gold contenders, Xiong Ni and Fu Mingxia, the reigning Olympic champions on China's diving team, are very likely to continue their glory in Sydney this fall, according to Chinadaily.
In a warm-up from August 13 to 15 in Jinan, the two multi-time Olympians, together had contributed four Olympic gold medals to China,out-performed their team members to win their individual and synchronized events.
The simulated Olympic contest tests the Olympic diving team and forms the final line-up for Sydney. Atlanta Olympics springboard champion Xiong found his best form since he came back two years ago, staging a flawless routine including two of his most difficult dives ever. The Chinese camp said repeating this show in Sydney, Xiong could get a mark higher than 750 points, enough to defend his title in his fourth Olympics.

Women in the Olympics - a brief history
The 20th May 2000 marks the 100th anniversary of the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games. It also marks the centenary of women’s participation in the modern Olympics. Three events were available for women at the 1900 Olympic Games: golf, tennis and yachting. When the modern Olympic Games began in 1896 women had no part in the competition. In fact, the founder of the modern Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin had said on several occasions that the Olympics were no place for women. He felt that rather than seek records for herself, a woman’s greatest achievement was to encourage her sons to excel. Women had to work to gain a presence in the Olympic arena and force open the door to one sport after another. Swimming for women was included in the Games in 1912 and a limited program of track and field was added in 1928. Women’s races longer than 200m were banned until 1960 when the 800m was reintroduced. The women’s marathon was not added until 1984. In 1992 the 10,000m walk was introduced and recently, waterpolo — which had been the domain of men since the Olympics first began — was added to the 2000 Olympic Games program for women. Women have played an enormous role in painting the Olympic picture. Since Charlotte Cooper of Great Britain won gold in singles tennis at the 1900 Paris Olympics, many women have put their stamp on Olympic history.

Diving Since divers and swimmers both end up in water, they're mistakenly linked in the minds of most viewers. However, diving actually has more in common with gymnastics than it does with swimming. Fancy diving is believed to have begun in the 1600s as part of the gymnastics movement that was popular throughout Germany and Sweden. Click a link to

More Sports Technique
Fancy dives are classified into four basic types: (1) the "layout," (2) the "pike," (3) the "tuck," and (4) the "free style." In the layout or "straight" dive, the body must not be bent in any fashion. In the pike, the body is bent at the hips and the knees are kept rigid. In the tuck, the body is compactly bunched with thighs drawn to the chest. The fourth dive, the "free style," may include twists or other intricate movements in the air. Competition
Both men and women compete separately in two events: the 3-meter springboard and the 10-meter platform.

He has heard it before and he'll hear it again: Alexandre Despatie, Canada's best bet for gold at the Olympics. The name and that statement are like peanut butter and jam or spaghetti and meatballs. The 19-year-old Laval diver is getting used to having his name at the top of Canada's Olympic contenders list and he always has the same reaction when he's reminded of that. "When I'm told that, I just say 'thank you very much' and that's it," Despatie, 19, said. "I just let it go and don't think about it. It's very nice of people to say that and my goal is to be in that position, but that's not what I'm concentrating on right now." Not that Despatie is running away from the pressure.

Peirsol golden in beating field, controversy
August 20, 2004 ATHENS By the time Aaron Peirsol made his last turn and headed into the final 50 meters of the 200 backstroke, he had a body-length lead and was chasing his own world record en route to his second gold of the Games. ADVERTISEMENT When he touched the wall, he saw the time of 1 minute 54.95 seconds, just off his world mark but an Olympic record nonetheless. He was only the fifth man in Olympic history to win the 100 and 200 backstrokes in one Games. But as he got out of the pool and started walking away, the scoreboard changed and a DSQ was put next to his name. As the disqualification was announced to the crowd at the Olympic Aquati Center, boos and whistles filled the air. Confusion reigned. "It sounds pretty bogus to me," Peirsol said as he walked out of the pool area. "I don't know what I did." Said Austria's Markus Rogan, who had been awarded first place, "I wish I knew." It took FINA, the sport's governing body, nearly 30 minutes to overturn the judge' ruling because "the detail of the reason supplied by the official being inadequate and not in the working language of FINA."
