  • Storylines By Albert Lin, CNNSI.com SYDNEY, Australia Upon winning two more golds at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Chinese diver Fu Mingxia decided to hang up her suit at the tender age of 18. Two years ago, however, she regained the itch and began her comeback. No longer the dominant diver in the world, she was still formidable. Entering Thursday night's three-meter springboard final, Fu trailed teammate Guo Jingjing by 8.4 points through five semifinal dives. Guo maintained her lead through the evening's first two attempts, then nearly surrendered it on the third when Fu nailed her back 2 1/2 somersault in a pike position. However, the New Zealand judge inexplicably gave her a 5.5, keeping her in second. Fu had momentum, though, and she passed Guo on her fourth dive of the final and ninth overall doing a reverse 2 1/2 somersault in a pike position to go up by 1.68 points.

    How to Watch Olympic Diving
Kristin Link, six-time USA Synchronized Platform Diving Champion, says that watching divers in competition need not be complicated. Just enjoy the ballet and the athleticism. Steps: Find an event in your area or on television. Visit www.usadiving.org to get a complete schedule. The 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials are in Seattle June 25-28; the Olympics are in Sydney in September 2000. Be aware of which events you are going to see. Olympic competition has men's and women's events in springboard and platform diving. The springboard catapults the divers high into the sky where they perform dives of various degrees of difficulty. The 10-meter platform rises three stories into the air and the divers launch themselves out and off of it. The Sydney Games will host the first synchronized platform diving in Olympic history. Have an understanding of the judging. In international diving, the judging consists of a panel of seven experts who score each dive considering four phases of the performance: the approach, takeoff, technique and grace during flight, and the water entry. In competition the divers perform compulsory and optional dives and each dive is scored on a 10-point basis. The highest and the lowest of the judges' scores are tossed out and the remaining five scores are totaled. These scores are then multiplied by 3, divided by 5, and multiplied again by the degree of difficulty of the dive. Whew! Listen for the announcers' explanations and watch the scoreboard.

    Future spot for architect's drawing!
The search is on. We have begun looking for land in central Pennsylvania to build a campus for the Institute. Our plan is described in more detail below. Eventually we anticipate that this campus will be one of the largest sports facilities in Pennsylvania.
The IISOH effectively has two divisions the Library and the Museum. The Board of Directors are seeking benefactor(s) to endow each division with a $25 million donation. An endowment will also be sought for the theatre in the amount of $25 million. The benefactor(s) will then be offered the opportunity to name the Library, Museum or theatre, subject to the final approval of the Board of Directors.
    Go to the ENDOWMENTS page.

Our plans are to construct facilities on a campus approximately 300 acres in size. This will allow us have room for expansion in the decades to come as we increase the endowment and add sports facilities to the educational program. Sports fields are desirable in order to teach through participation and play. If we have a baseball field we can teach the history of baseball by playing a game using 1860 rules for 3 innings, then playing by modern rules for 3 innings. In the basement of the Museum we could have a bowling alley from the 1800's where the pins have to be set by hand, and right next to it have a modern bowling alley that is fully automated. Our visitors can go bowling either way. Consider the possibilities for each and every sport this means a lot of space is needed.

    Diving Medal Chances
There is genuine excitement about the prospects of the Australian diving team in Athens. After ending a 76-year medal drought at the 2000 Olympics, the Athens squad boasts medal contenders in every event. Russian-born Irina Lashko is the most experienced member and is competing in her first games for Australia after previously representing the Soviet Union, Unified Team and Russia at Olympic level. Lashko won the 1m springboard at last year's World Championships but will compete in the 3m springboard in Athens. Other medal contenders include Robert Newbery , who is competing in all four men's events, Mathew Helm in the two 10m platform events and Loudy Tourky also on the high tower. Australia, Russia and China are the only three countries to qualify the maximum berths in Athens, and these countries won eight of the 10 gold medals at 2003 World Championships – Canada won the remaining two. The USA has almost slipped off the radar in world diving circles. In Olympic history the Americans have won 47 of the 89 gold diving medals won, but they walked away from last year's World Championships without winning a single medal.

The closing ceremonies are on Sunday, August 29, 2004. The Ancient Olympics
The ancient Greeks dedicated the Olympic Games to the god Zeus. The original games were held on the plain of Olympia in Peloponnesos, Greece. The Greeks held the first Olympic games in the year 776 BC (over 2700 years ago), and had only one event, a sprint (a short run that was called the "stade"). The race was run by men who competed in the nude. A wreath of olive branches was placed on the winner's head (in Greek, this is called a kotinos). The olive tree was the sacred tree of Athens, Greece. Women were neither allowed to compete in the games nor to watch them, because the games were dedicated to Zeus and were therefore meant for men.

    Types of Dives
Judging Diving Diving Equipment Diving Positions ... Glossary of Terms There is little historical data on the sport of diving prior to the first modern-day diving competition held in England around 1880. While swimming and diving are commonly linked, contemporary diving has more similarities with gymnastics. In the early 1800s, Swedish and German gymnasts practiced their somersaults and twists over water. Their practices became known as "Fancy Diving", a term that stuck until the early 1900s. Diving has been an Olympic event, for men, since 1904 and for women, since 1912. The 1908 Olympics in London included a full competition in "Fancy Diving" from both platform and "elastic board". Women's "Plain Diving" was added in the 1912 Olympics and "Spring-board" in 1920. When diving debuted at the 1904 Olympics, one of the two events was a plunge for distance, the goal being to swim the furthest underwater after a dive. The event was dropped immediately because it was not well received by the audience - not really a spectator sport. At the 1908 Games in London, the pool was 100 metres long and the diving tower was removable. In 1908, springboard diving was added to the original platform diving event. At the 1912 Stockholm Games "Fancy High Diving" was introduced and it was the first time women were allowed to compete in their own platform event. Women had a springboard event beginning in 1920. The first concrete diving tower was built in 1924 at the Swimming Stadium Tourelles in Paris.

From that time through 1992, the United States has been the world leader in diving. The total count is 46 of 75 Olympic gold medals for the United States.
