Fostering Diversity in the Classroom: Teaching by Discussion
Professor Ron Billingsley
English Department University
Colorado at Boulder
Cultural diversity is a fact, often unacknowledged, of our national history. And while it is true that fostering diversity is an idea which is consistent with some of our most enduring national ideals, such as respect for the right of each individual to pursue life in their own fashion, promoting these ideals in the classroom can often prove very difficult. The difficulties which must be overcome stem from several sources: 1. A basic lack of knowledge about the diverse peoples and lifestyles that have always been a part of the American experience. 2. Inherited prejudices and stereotypes, many of which are unacknowledged and/or un-known.

The word is out! Home-school collaboration improves educational opportunity. In response, schools are increasingly developing programs that bring together parents of linguistically and culturally diverse students, teachers, and the students themselves. This report offers practitioners strategies for doing so. Based on a 3-year CREDE project conducting literacy nights for the families of low performing Asian American English language learners, the report presents obstacles encountered in forming home-school partnerships, theoretical frameworks and principles that guided implementation of the partnerships, and a discussion of findings for practitioners. The report also includes strategies for parents and researchers. Purchase the report through the CAL store

Section IX. Diversity in Curriculum
The difficult dialogues of diversity in higher education are the pivotal points in addressing the national and global challenges our students face in the 21st century.
We need to engage these dialogues in the classroom at all levels of education. Johnnella Butler,
Associate Dean and Associate Vice Provost, Graduate School Approaches to Diversity in the Curriculum Diversity in the curriculum at public, research I universities encompasses several interrelated concerns: ensuring that graduates have requisite diversity knowledge and competencies; supporting undergraduate and graduate curricula in fields of study focusing on diversity; sequencing the study of diversity within curricula and programs; providing faculty development in effective pedagogical techniques for teaching in diverse classrooms; and ensuring student satisfaction with opportunities for study. Universities normally ensure that their graduates have necessary knowledge and competencies related to diversity through diversity requirements (Fitzgerald and Lauter, 2003). In 1995, the UW Faculty Senate, responding to defeat of a student-sponsored diversity requirement, passed a resolution encouraging all departments to create more courses that teach students to think critically about diversity.

Washington, D.C.: Lessons on Diversity and Change
The Washington, D.C., metropolitan area is a region of diversity and change. The District of Columbia and its surrounding counties are an example of demographic changes in U.S. metropolitan areas. This series of lessons explores the diversity of the Washington, D.C. area and focuses on the census data available to measure demographic change. Activities will explore immigration to the region, the diversity of the people who live there, the dynamics of families, and the impact of population growth. The 2000 Census provided researchers, policymakers, and the general public a wealth of data about our nation. This information complements this series by providing statistics for the D.C. metropolitan area on such topics as race and ethnicity, households, families, population size, and composition. These lessons were developed by Susan Dennis, a social studies teacher at Anacostia Senior High School, and Cheryl Lynn Stauffer, at the Population Reference Bureau. Lessons were developed with support from the Fowler Foundation.

Fostering Diversity
This issue of NETWORK explores how service learning can foster diversity in a multicultural society. CRF’s Executive Director Todd Clark presents our nation’s diversity as the true guardian of homeland security. Sacramento-based educator Lorie Hammond describes a teacher-training program where service learning becomes a tool to use immigrant cultures as community resources. Lynne Feldman , a New Jersey social-studies teacher offers a comprehensive outline for a school and community teach-in about the Middle East. An excerpt from CRF’s The Challenge of Diversity provides a lesson and sample projects designed to address hate crimes and diversity issues. Our Profiles section demonstrates three different projects that promote diversity in the classroom and the community while FYI offers an array of diversity resources from the Internet. This issue of Service-Learning Network is made possible by
a generous grant from the Ford Foundation.

Overview Cultural diversity has emerged as one of the most important issues for educators in the 21st century, both for those teaching and leading in culturally homogeneous environments, and those working in culturally diverse classrooms, schools, and communities. It is becoming increasingly evident that, in addition to the basic professional certification and degree requirements, educators of today and tomorrow also need to understand and respond effectively to the ever growing diversity of students they encounter. Thus, cultural awareness and intercultural competence are becoming one of the major professional requirements for urban and suburban schools and communities.
The Advanced Certificate in Teaching and Leading for Diversity (ACTLD) has been created by the Graduate School of Education (GSE) at the University at Buffalo to meet the growing demand by educators for the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to address and embrace cultural diversity.
The major goals of the ACTLD program are to raise cultural awareness and intercultural competence through tolerance, sensitivity, understanding, and learning. In addition, teachers will acquire creative strategies and basic techniques for dealing effectively with cultural diversity in their classrooms, schools, and communities. For more information, please contact:
