Diversity Activities
Why multicultural education activities are important
Activities provide students an opportunity to experience new things and to express their feelings. In fact, personal expression is an essential component of multicultural education. With the incorporation of multicultural activities into the classroom, educators are better able to facilitate discussions about multicultural topics. Activities add variety to the teaching methods used in the classroom. Using activities can also help educators reach students who may benefit from a more hands-on or practical learning experience. Activities also allow students to become actively involved in the learning process. Activities encourage students to critically think about and analyze information themselves, rather than being passive recipients.
How to incorporate multicultural education activities into your classroom
  • Consider teaching techniques that increase the success and effectiveness of the activity.

It is our hope that educators will use this tool as a means of researching lesson plans to be used in their coursework. These lessons have been developed by teachers around the country, and employ a vast array of techniques and media to convey the heroic struggle between dreams and hardships that immigrants face when beginning their new life in America. We will continue to add to our collection of curricula, and eventually plan to post a searchable database of immigration lessons. Immigration Lesson Plans are

Religion and Art
Art, Religion, and Popular Culture . The goals of the three modules are (1) to read visual and literary texts from other cultures looking for what these artifacts tell them (and us) about religion—how others understand the nature, meaning, and goal of human existence; and (2) to help students “see” (also read, hear) religion all around them in new and unexpected ways. The modules emphasize class discussion, journaling, and short writing responses. One module highlights Asian religions. (For context and commentary regarding how this unit was developed, see the Religion and the Arts page).
Religion and Government
These two lesson plans on religious liberty clauses in the U.S. Constitution are provided by The First Amendment Center Understanding the Establishment Clause
This plan provides the historical background of the religious liberty clauses of the First Amendment, and then focuses on the establishment clause. After examining the tests used by the Supreme Court in establishment clause cases, students are asked to judge whether there has been a violation of the establishment clause in five situations. Understanding the Free-Exercise Clause
This plan provides five cases in which an individual's freedom of conscience comes into conflict with the interests of the larger society. Students hear the arguments put forth by plaintiffs and defendants in each case, and then deliberate on what limits, if any, may be placed on religious expression.
