He became Columbia Schools superintendent in August 1995. Nestled between the Columbia and Snake Rivers is the Columbia School District. There are two school districts in Washington with the name Columbia; one near Hunters, and one closer to the Tri-Cities - sometimes referred to as Columbia-Burbank or just Burbank. The second shall be this story's focus. You pass through it as you travel toward Walla Walla on Highway 12. This Walla Walla County school district serves 907 students and stretches south from Burbank to Wallula. As you drive east toward Waitsburg, the Charbonneau area also is within our district. Spanning 131 square miles, the district was formed April 3, 1943. While the focus of this article shall be to point out the challenges of a smaller district where there is no formal city government authority and services, I shall compare our goals and directions to our neighbors. I shall use my 12 years of experience as an administrator in the Kennewick School District to formulate the observations. In the eyes of our main client, our students, Columbia Elementary School, Columbia Middle School and Columbia High School are similar to schools across this region. Their teachers are prepared from the same schools, their schools have adopted similar subjects and topics to teach, and their district stretches for challenging academic standards.
