MOTIVATION
REQUIREMENTS
However, some undergraduate degrees may seem more appropriate to teaching than others. For example, a psychology major or a liberal arts major at the B.A. level provides a strong foundation for understanding child development or the culture of the society, both areas of study in professional teacher education. Degrees in other professional areas, such as accounting or economics, may not satisfy state requirements for licensing. Candidates with such degrees may therefore find it necessary to take additional content course work (Hutchinson, 1997; McNamara, 1991). Licensing for the primary and elementary levels demands a general distribution of content courses over the fields of English, social studies, math, science, art, music, and physical education. Secondary teaching requires a concentration in one area or two related areas, such as math and science. Usually, candidates who have not taught for at least one full year in a classroom at the level for which they are seeking a license must complete a supervised internship in student teaching at that level. Internships may vary in length, though a minimum of 10 weeks full time or its equivalent is standard (NASDTEC, 1998; NCATE, 1995).

Alternative Certification Many states have developed or are initiating programs that provide alternative routes to teacher certification, particularly for mid-career professionals. The goal of such programs is to draw a diversity of individuals with in-depth subject matter backgrounds into teaching careers. Requirements for an alternative teaching license vary by state. For an overseas position, it does not matter what state your license is from. Generally, applicants must hold a bachelors degree in the subject to be taught, achieve a passing score on state-required examinations, complete an intensive teacher preparation program, and possibly fulfill a supervised teaching internship. Specific information on which school systems are offering internships can be requested from the schools. After satisfactory completion of these requirements, the applicant will be issued a teaching credential.

Why America Needs National Board Certified Teachers There are more than 32,000 National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and overseas.
National Board Certification is a credential attesting that a teacher has been judged by peers as one who is accomplished; makes sound professional judgments about student learning; and acts effectively on those judgments. National Board Certified Teachers demonstrate a high level of knowledge, skills, dispositions and commitments reflected in the National Board's Five Core Propositions
  • Teachers are committed to students and their learning.
  • Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.

History Education in the United States: A Survey of Teacher Certification and State-Based Standards and Assessments for Teachers and Students
By Sarah Drake Brown and John Patrick
What is the condition of K-12 history education today? Answering this question requires an understanding of how the various states prepare and evaluate their teachers and students. This site offers a snapshot of state policies taken in Fall of 2002, focused on five key areas: teacher certification; content standards for teachers; content standards for students; high school graduation and exit exam requirements; and assessments. The Organization of American Historians and the American Historical Association present this survey to those who seek to measure and improve how history is taught in America's elementary, middle, and high schools.

Methods of Gathering and Verifying Data
A central goal of this project was to develop a snapshot of precollegiate history education in the 50 states and Washington, D.C. Hired by the Organization of American Historians as the lead researcher for this OAH/AHA project, Sarah Drake Brown requested information in the following categories:
  • certification requirements for history teachers at the elementary, middle, and high school levels
  • standards in history for teachers
  • standards in history for the K-12 curriculum
  • high school graduation requirements and exit examination requirements in history
  • state criterion-referenced examinations in history
  • statewide resources for history teachers and contact information for state history/social studies specialists
  • statewide associations for teacher membership This proved to be a massive amount of data, so the information was collected in separate steps: independent searches for data, preliminary public presentations of initial findings, and early contact with numerous representatives in history education from each of the states and the District of Columbia. Preliminary data was then collected from the web sites created and maintained by the various departments of education and certifying bodies in each of the states. This information was then compiled into reports for each state, organized into sections based on the categories listed above.
