COLUMBIA BOROUGH SCHOOL DISTRICT The Columbia Museum of History The Rich Tradition and History of the Columbia Public Schools The roots of the educational system in Columbia were planted in fertile soil. Early settlers to the area were those who placed a value on literacy and possessed the ability to read write and compute. They passed on these abilities to their children and utilized the services of tutors to advance the learning if the children of the community. Many families also sent their children to Philadelphia or Lancaster to reap the benefits of the many private schools that had been established there. A final evidence of their desire for education was the number and progression of private schools that were established in and about the community. In 1916, the Washington Institute building was demolished. In its place was erected a new high school that was opened in 1917. After paying a portion of the debt, the Public Ground Company turned the building over to the Board of School Directors who assumed the debt and eventual ownership of the building. An addition was added to the high school in 1939, which was opened in 1940. The high school remained at the Park Street location until 1956. The current

Collaboration Highlight for 2002 Printer Friendly Version School Libraries Get Top Marks with Help from IMLS Grants Students in schools with media centers that are well-staffed, have networked technology, and have strong collections perform better on standardized tests, according to a major study funded in part by IMLS. The Library Research Service of the Colorado State Library released a report in June 2000. It showed that state reading scores for students in schools that focused on improving their library programs were, on average, eight to 21 percent higher than similar schools without such development, even when other factors like community demographics are taken into account. Findings from this and other studies across the country prove what many in the library community already know: that school media centers can make a big difference in student achievement. Through the administration of Library Services and Technology (LSTA) grants through state library agencies, IMLS has developed a track record of support for school libraries and librarians. Many of these libraries are earning extra credit with students, teachers, principals, and communities with projects that reach underserved audiences, promote literacy and reading, improve collections, and use technology creatively. Lesson in partnership The Federal Hocking School District is located in the rural foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in southeastern Ohio. District services are spread across 250 square miles, and the public library is as far as 20 miles away from the homes of some residents. District librarian Bonnie Lackey strives to provide library services to the district's 1,444-student population, which includes many from low-income families. Building Boom School districts nationwide are facing increasing facilities needs By Craig Colgan There was good news throughout the halls of many rundown, aging New Jersey school buildings on July 18, 2000. On that day, an $8.6 billion school facilities and construction bond package became law; $6 billion of the total was earmarked for 30 of the state's highest-need districts. For those Abbott districts, so named during two decades of haggling and litigation with the state over funding, the day was long overdue. But three years later, some of those good vibrations have faded into frustration as many districts have not started the construction process, while others continue to lag behind. "There should have been more preparation, because the writing was on the wall that this was coming," says Edward Brzezowski, a New Jersey-based construction engineer and a member of the advisory board for the National Clearinghouse for Educational Facilities (NCEF).

The patient's TB disease may have gone undiagnosed during an earlier stay because HIV infection may cause atypical presentations of TB. There is a need for careful diagnosis that considers possible TB-HIV coinfection, especially among patients with HIV who have pulmonary symptoms or unexplained fever and weight loss. One patient with TB disease has potential to come into contact with a large number of patients and staff in a hospital setting, as in this situation. The resulting secondary TB cases among hospitalized patients and hospital staff illustrates that heightened awareness and vigilance is required by health-care workers to promptly identify and treat suspected TB cases.
