Bloodbath in the District of Columbia
By: The Essayist Looking presidential. Consider Friend Bill, the preeminent hair-ball barfed up from the stomach of the overfed, self-satisfied cat that is our current political system. He has not so much broken the law as shattered it with his earnest face by perjuring himself over and over to try to save his ass. Each time he was asked, he lied to the American public, including his memorable " I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky " finger-shaker on 26Jan98. Little did he realize that clips of that remark will be in electronic encyclopedias and histories to the end of time. Until the evidence that built up including DNA testing of the spinach dip stained dress made further denials absurd, he continued to prevaricate. Even when forced into telling some of the truth, he would not apologize like a grown-up. Instead he whined out an attempted justification of his deceit; the lawsuit was "politically inspired" and the investigation was of his "private life". We're really sorry, Little Billy, but you sacrificed your private life to become the top public figure of the land. Regardless, when the court finds it necessary to ask questions, you have the same two options I would have: tell the truth or remain silent.

GW Sets Leadership Course for the Future
Trachtenberg Signs New Five-Year Contract; Provost Appointed Through a series of major management decisions solidified this academic year, GW has planned the future of its leadership for much of the rest of this decade. Williams will serve a three-year term as provost. He has been vice president for health affairs since 1997, and became dean of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences in 1999 after serving as executive dean. Over the years, Williams has overseen the construction of the new hospital and has been a key leader in emergency preparedness planning efforts for the District of Columbia. Katz is now executive vice president and treasurer; Lehman is executive vice president for academic affairs and the George Gamow Professor of Theoretical Physics; and Chernak is senior vice president for student and academic support services. All three will play key roles in an overall strategic plan the University is implementing to achieve a higher level of academic excellence and of the services provided by the University (see related story).

NPPA Reiterates Need For A National Shield Law
(July 7, 2005) - The National Press Photographers Association joins with the Newspaper Association of America March 2005 called for the passage of a shield law to protect the rights of all journalists. Today NPPA joins with NAA and as many as 80 other orgranizations in issuing this press release: Jail Time for Miller Stresses the Need for Federal Shield Law
WASHINGTON - With New York Times reporter Judith Miller sentenced Wednesday to four months in jail for not revealing confidential sources on a story that she never wrote, lawmakers and media groups are calling for Congress to act on legislation that would protect journalists against the release of confidential source information.
The proposed "Free Flow of Information Act" follows closely the U.S. Department of Justice guidelines that allow testimony to be compelled from a journalist only after non-media sources have been exhausted and such testimony is essential to the investigation of a criminal case or to the resolution of a civil case. The legislation also expands upon the guidelines by protecting the identities of confidential sources. Sponsors of the legislation, H.R.581 and S.340, are Representatives Mike Pence (R-IN) and Rick Boucher (D-VA) and Senators Richard Lugar (R-IN) and Christopher Dodd (D-CT).
