Grade Configuration in K-12 Schools
Nancy McEntire
2002 (Last updated May 2005)
How do schools differ in grade configuration?
Schools in the United States are organized in different ways: some schools include K-3, K-4, K-5, K-6, K-8, K-9, or K-12; others are organized as middle schools, junior high schools, and senior high schools; and still others consist of students in just one grade, such as a kindergarten center or a ninth-grade center. Some schools include pre-kindergarten. The U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (2002) provides data on the number of regular public school districts providing instruction and the percentage of students in membership, by grade span and by state, for the school year 2000-2001 (

http://www.asbj.com/BrownvBoard/brown10.html
While the Brown v. Board of Education ruling led to massive changes in how America educates its children, it was the result of a long struggle that continues even in the shadow of the 50th anniversary of the decision. The timeline below, culled from a variety of resources, illustrates that struggle from 1887 to today. Twenty-two years after the Civil War ends, and 12 years after Congress passes the Civil Rights Act of 1875, "Jim Crow" emerges. Florida becomes the first state to pass a law requiring segregation in places of public accommodation; by 1892, eight other states have similar laws in effect. This practice of "comprehensive racial segregation" continues for more than 70 years. In Plessy v. Ferguson, the Supreme Court rules that "separate but equal" facilities for whites and blacks do not violate the 14th Amendment's Equal Protection Clause. In the case, Homer A. Plessy challenged an 1890 Louisiana law that required separate train cars for blacks and whites. The lone dissenter among the justices, John Marshall Harlan, predicts that forced segregation would continue to label blacks with a badge of inferiority. Harlan's argument later would prove to be a decisive factor in the Brown v.

Web Policy with Release Form
The following K-12 School Districts are using a web policy with a release form as their major tool for guiding district web publishing. In most cases, the release form allows the parents to select which, if any, personal information is allowed to be published on the web. Most of these districts also have an Acceptable Use Policy, however, their AUP's do not address publishing of information via the web. Richmond School District.

K-12 Education
Action Center
Join our action network and make your voice be heard. Overview Latino children are a large and rapidly growing segment of the U.S. public school student population. In 2001, more than seven million Latinos were enrolled in K-12 public schools, representing 16.3% of K-12 students. At the same time, the number of English language learner (ELL) students has increased. Currently, there are an estimated 5.5 million ELL students enrolled in public schools, representing 11.6% of the total K-12 public school enrollment. This is a 126% growth rate since the 1991-92 academic year. NCLR Position NCLR supports standards-based reform, which results in increased access to challenging academic coursework for Latino students and provides schools attended by Hispanic children with the resources needed to implement such reforms. NCLR believes schools should be held accountable for helping ELL students master English and meet the same academic standards as their English-proficient peers.
