The Homework Dilemma: How Much Should Parents Get Involved?
What can teachers do to help parents help their children with homework? Just what kind of parental involvement and how much involvement truly helps children with their homework? The most useful stance parents can take, many experts agree, is to be somewhat but not overly involved in homework. The emphasis needs to be on parents' helping children do their homework themselves not on doing it for them. In an Instructor magazine article, How to Make Parents Your Homework Partners , study-skills consultant Judy Dodge maintains that involving students in homework is largely the teacher's job, yet parents can help by "creating a home environment that's conducive to kids getting their homework done."

Working with Gay and Lesbian Adoptive Parents
Eight-year-old Kevin has spent the past 6 years in a series of foster homes. His parents are unable to take care of him because they are homeless and addicted to drugs and alcohol. Kevin has just become available for adoption, but because of his age and family background, families are not waiting in line to make a home for him. Larry and Adam, however, are interested in adopting Kevin. They are a gay couple with a completed home study. From all indications, they would be sensitive and caring parents. Kevin's social worker must make a difficult decision, one that is arising more frequently these days. Should a gay couple be permitted to adopt?

Resources on Minnesota Issues
Educational Vouchers
This guide is compiled by staff at the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library on a topic of interest to Minnesota legislators. It is designed to provide an introduction to the topic, directing the user to a variety of sources, and is not intended to be exhaustive. In particular, it is focused on items available in the Legislative Reference Library. "School choice" refers to a number of different school alternatives such as interdistrict or intradistrict transfers, magnet schools, postsecondary enrollment options, charter schools, alternative learning centers, and private school choice through state-funded vouchers or tax credits. Minnesotans already have most of these options available to them. Even though state legislatures have made numerous attempts to pass a wide variety of voucher programs, relatively few have been enacted. Of those that were created most have been challenged in court based on First Amendment issues related to the separation of church and state/establishment of religion. In the 1971 United States Supreme Court case, Lemon v. Kurtzman

Background The first Parent Information Resource Centers were created by the U.S. Department of Education in 1995 to provide parents, schools and organizations working with families with training, information, and technical assistance to understand better how children develop and what they need to succeed in school. Today, there are over 80 PIRCs in 38 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. PIRCs work closely with parents, family advocates, educators, community organizers, and others committed to educational success for all students, especially low-income, minority, and English language-learning students. PIRCs help parents and schools become effective partners by helping schools to fulfill the requirements of No Child Left Behind and implement effective parent involvement policies, programs, and activities that lead to improved academic achievement for all students.
