Welcome! If you'd like to "change the climate" around marijuana to keep your kids safe from hard drugs, to save thousands of your tax dollars, and to stop the senseless arrest of millions, then support Change the Climate It's a campaign, founded by parents and business professionals, to educate the public about the tremendous waste of our tax dollars for the "war on marijuana" and the increasing threat to our basic civil liberties. Our goal is to tell the truth about marijuana to de-demonize it so that someday, politicians will support marijuana reform legislation. Support us now and help us tell the truth. Like other drugs, marijuana is NOT for kids. But providing inaccurate information about marijuana in the form of "shock ads" only discredits adults and our efforts to curb marijuana use by young people. Click here for ideas on how to talk to your kids about marijuana. Change the Climate's advertising campaign is an effective way to change attitudes and bring marijuana reform directly to the people billboards and banner ads reach different people than NY Times and New Republic ads. Politicians will NOT make any effort to change unjust, wasteful and unconstitutional marijuana laws until it's clear that people are fed up with these laws. Since 1996, medical marijuana initiatives have been passed by a majority of voters in eight states and the District of Columbia and no state has ever rejected a medical marijuana initiative. Currently, one in five voters in the U.S. lives in a state where marijuana is legal for medicinal purposes.

Washington's Literacy Coalition
Over the last several years, Washington, D.C. has experienced impressive economic growth. Unfortunately, many D.C. citizens lack the basic skills they need to take advantage of this robust economy. Moreover, many are not able to access the information they need to protect their health, safety or legal rights. And far too many are unable to read to their children. Thankfully, there are over a hundred programs and groups both large and small here in the District working to help our children, youth, and adults improve their literacy skills. However, most of these programs are small community-based organizations with limited resources. That's where D.C. LEARNs comes in. For nearly a decade, we have been Washington's literacy coalition . We work together with our members to raise public awareness of literacy issues, recruit volunteers , and provide the materials, research, training, and technical assistance needed to raise the quality of literacy services available to D.C. residents.

DC Education Compact The DC Education Compact (DCEC) is a community partnership committed to ensuring that the District of Columbia schools educate our District children — all our children. DCEC is composed of volunteers — parents, teachers, principals, school administrators, business leaders, community activists, foundation staff, elected officials, and concerned citizens. Together, DCEC has pledged to help the District's superintendent, Dr. Clifford B. Janey, bring real change to our schools. 21CSF is a leading participant in this citywide effort (funded by the Fannie Mae, Kimsey, and Community foundations) to improve the public schools. DCEC's final reports were incorporated in the Dr. Janey's Declaration of Education, his strategic plan to raise achievement and the quality of education in the District. The final reports and the strategic plan are linked below. For more information, please visit

The Columbia School District
lies in a rural area that stretches into four southeast Michigan counties. Within the district one finds a multitude of inland lakes and plenty of recreational opportunities. The beautiful and placid atmosphere has attracted many new residents from urban areas. This influx from the cities has provided our school district with a richly diverse population and a rapidly growing business community. In the late 1960's the current school district was formed through the consolidation of the Brooklyn, Cement City and Clarklake schools systems. Today the Columbia School District provides educational services for about 2,000 students and is a Class B school system. The Columbia School District believes that ALL students can learn and achieve mastery of essential skills. The district, to the extent it is financially able to provide physical and human resources required to meet these responsibilities, is dedicated to providing an environment that fosters self-esteem, self-motivation, and responsibility in our students. The district also believes that education is a cooperative effort between home, school and the community.

New International Study Looks at Interest Rates on Student Loans
TORONTO, ON, September 9, 2005 Global Debt Patterns: an International Comparison of Student Loan Burdens and Repayment Conditions focuses on the debt burdens that students face and the strategies employed in each country to deal with student debt.
The report shows that total student debt in Canada is not especially high by international standards, but that average student loan repayment burdens are very onerous due to high interest rates. As well, the report also shows that the United States is by no means unique in terms of the amount of debt students are carrying. Copies of the research report may be downloaded by clicking here.
