t t DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA / SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION MUSEUM MAGNET SCHOOL EVALUATION PROJECT t t BACKGROUND The District of Columbia Public School (DCPS) , as part of an effort to achieve systemic reform, has created two Museum Magnet Schools in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution's Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE) The Mid-Atlantic Equity Consortium (MAEC) was awarded the contract to evaluate this innovative project. In August 1995, the DCPS was awarded a magnet schools assistance program grant to establish two museum schools, Brent Elementary School and Stuart Hobson Middle School, in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution. The grant provides funding for three years to help the magnet school project bring about systemic reform and prepare all students to meet district standards. The project has the following purposes, in accordance with the U.S. Department of Education Magnet School Assistance Program: to reduce minority isolation in the Museum Magnet Schools; to feature innovative museum-based educational methods and practices in a technology-enhanced learning environment;
