The Inscrutable 8-Ball Revealed
Obtained One Tyco Here, the 8-Ball is pictured in its original packaging. These toys (some might call them "oracles" or "prophets") cost about $8.00 at the nearby FAO Schwartz. For this procedure, you will need at least one 8-Ball, which will be destroyed. Pursued Exploratory Drilling Everyone who's played with an 8-Ball knows that they seem to be filled with a murky, viscous (and presumably harmless) blue fluid. At this stage in the disassembly, the authors believed it might be neccessary to drain the blue fluid before cutting the shell. To that end, drain holes were drilled in the outer shell, and an attempt was made to release the blue fluid. This attempt was unsuccesful; it seems that the blue fluid is contained within some inner reservior, or, perhaps, a circulatory system. Craniectomy Performed At this step, the rotary tool was converted from drill mode to cutting mode. A large, circular incision was made around the "8" emblazoned on the toy. An earlier, initial attempt at the seam of the outer shell met with unexpected resistance to cutting. The succesful cut was at approximately 45° latitude. The Inner Workings Were Revealed The section that was disconnected from the outer shell was removed, revealing the top of what appeared to be a cylinder.

var p=2; What are we doing when we brainwash children in schools to cut open their fellow animals? Are we dangerously desensitizing them? Some of the most warped and blunted people I know are those whose have gone through prolonged training of this sort Richard D. Ryder, from the Proceedings of the Symposium held by the Humane Education Council at Sussex University, 1980.
Issues
Dissection condones cruelty in science. Dissection teaches youth that animals are merely resources for our disposal, not living organisms which experience pain and suffering, and desire only to lead their lives. Humans must learn the value of existence; cutting up animals instils anthropocentric (exclusively human-centered) values. Studying life does not require destruction. Dissection overlooks the possibility of observing living creatures in their environment. Accumulating profit from suffering is unethical. Animal supply companies depend on the breeding and murder of animals for monetary profits. Governments have been condemned for using human subjects (without consent) for research. Yet, our culture reinforces the idea that it is acceptable to exploit animals. Cruelty-free alternatives exist to animal dissection like physical and computer modelling. While Ontario's Ministry of Education recognizes the legitimacy and viability of alternative methods, the Ministry fails to act more aggressively to end animal testing in Ontario . The reluctance of authorities to implement cruelty-free alternatives to dissection is unethical.

Cricket Dissection
Charlotte St. Romain
1991 Woodrow Wilson Biology Institute
Objective:
To provide an easy animal dissection. To provide a simple system to test the effects of various chemicals on breathing and heartbeat rate.
Background:
There is much controversy about vertebrate animal dissection fueled by animal rights groups but many students learn a great deal by dissecting and look forward to the activity. Some students need the 3 dimensional model to distinguish the morphological features and to understand how the systems are integrated and work. We selected house crickets because they are readily available, easy to rear and maintain, inexpensive, reproduce in large number, and they are not generally distasteful to most people.
Materials:
for group of 2 students:
  • 2 house crickets
  • dissection pan (or wax-filled Petri dish)
  • source of CO2
  • forceps
  • scissors
  • pins
  • dissecting microscope
  • Insect Ringer's solution (see appendix for recipe)
  • solutions for neurotransmitters
Procedure:
Note the 3 body regions: the head - 5 segments, the thorax - 3 segments, and the abdomen - 10 segments. The wings and legs are located on the thorax. Remove the wings and legs and put the insect abdomen (ventral) side up in the dish.

An education in death and destruction Do you think students should be taught caring
and responsible attitudes to animals? If so, what sort of attitudes do you think school students learn from cutting up animals for biology exercises? One Australian student who believes it is wrong to exploit animals expresses it this way: "Biology is the science of life, yet we are told that to study life we must mutilate dead animals who have been bred, born and killed in wire cages, and whose bodies we then throw into the garbage". Dissection contradicts the purpose of biology It indoctrinates students that animals are here for us to use and abuse. Studies show that students learn just as much from videos and computer simulations, without destroying life. All students have the right to refuse to do dissections. Demand to learn biology, the science of life, without causing death. There ARE alternatives!

Squid Dissection Objectives: As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:
  • Locate and identify major external and internal features and organs of a squid.
  • Understand and use basic dissection techniques and terms.
  • Critically examine the functions of several squid features and organs. Teaching Notes: This lab is a very thorough dissection of a squid and can be adapted to different grade levels. Teachers should try the lessons, considering which parts are most appropriate for their students and curriculum. The descriptions use complex dissection terminology. Be certain students understand the vocabulary of dissection prior to beginning the lab. These lessons were tested with middle school students ages 11 to 13. They followed procedures and understood concepts well. The skills necessary to do all steps in the dissection are within the normal ability range of middle school students. Materials:
    • squid*
    • scissors
    • toothpicks (for probes and pointers)
    • drawing paper
    • forceps
    • hand lens (5x recommended)
    • small cups (ketchup cups work well)
    • dissecting pan (or lunch trays)
    • paper towels
    • diagram of squid
    • wash bottle
    • microscope (optional)
    • dissecting scopes (optional)
    • slides (optional)
    • slide covers (optional)
*Look for squid at the local supermarket in the seafood and frozen foods sections. You may have to order it in advance. For areas that have them, you can also go to the local fish market or oriental food stores, or you can deal directly with fishermen.

In 1995 guitarist John Zweetslot had to leave the band which was a big setback since he was an important song-writer. He was getting lazy and didn´t bother coming to the rehearsals so there was no other way to go. John almost immediately started a new band called Cardinal Sin together with former members of the Swedish black metal band Marduk. The new guitarist was Johan Norman, a long time friend of the band. In July 1997 Jon Mödveidt and a guy named Vlad killed a 37-year old homosexual Algerian named Josef Ben Maddour and on the 7th of July Jon was sentenced to 8 years in prison and Vlad to 10 years. Vlad was also wanted for another murder and mutilation of a teenage girl but I don´t know if he was convicted for this. In October 1998 German major label Nuclear Blast signed Johan Norman's new band Reaper, later renamed Soulreaper. MEMBERS

Bio Dissection is a Core 77 feature segment focused on understanding how the synergy of materials, manufacturing techniques, and design lead to innovative products. Its goal is to uncover the secrets of a design by conducting an autopsy on a coveted design object. This feature is about more than merely appreciating a product's aesthetic, or even its "cool" factor. It is an understanding of a product’s life, and through its dissection , how well it lived. As designers and engineers, we spend much of our time justifying new processes, materials, and manufacturing techniques to our clients, when, in fact, many of us aren’t daily consumers of the products we create. We also rarely have the chance to review our products post mortem and witness how well they aged. However, if we can learn how products live, and in turn degrade, we can make better choices in our material selections, manufacturing processes, and their applications. As is the case of any scientific dissection, the ability to learn about our specimen begins with the quality of the cadaver. The criteria for candidacy is that the object must be instantly recognizable, sought after, and utilize multiple and progressive manufacturing techniques. Today’s sacrifice to the design gods is my beloved
