Dissection of a Blue Mackerel
Scomber australasicus
This site shows the dissection of a Blue Mackerel (view fact sheet ). The dissection was performed by Year 12 students at St Vincent's College , Potts Point, Sydney in May 1998, and photographed by staff of the Australian Museum Photographic Department. The aim of the dissection was for students to become familiar with the internal organs of a fish, primarily the swim bladder. This site has been put together to assist students and teachers with similar dissections. Many of the organs that are encountered during a typical fish dissection are named and discussed. Dissection Campaign Packet
The HSUS has created a Dissection Campaign Packet for students of high school age and younger. The aim of this project is to help you to inform teachers, students, and other members of the public about the dissection issue, and about the need to replace the practice of killing and cutting up animals for education with effective, humane alternatives. Some of the materials in this packet are listed below, with suggestions on ways to use them:

Computer-Enhanced Science Education: The Whole Frog Project

WHOLE FROG PROJECT
Introduction
The DSD "Whole Frog" project is intended to introduce the concepts of modern, computer based 3D visualization, and at the same time to demonstrate the power of whole body, 3D imaging of anatomy as a curriculum tool. The goal of the Whole Frog Project is to provide high school biology classes the ability to explore the anatomy of a frog by using data from high resolution MRI imaging and from mechanical sectioning, together with 3D surface and volume rendering software to visualize the anatomical structures of the intact animal. Ultimately we intend to be able to "enter the heart and fly down blood vessels, poking our head out at any point to see the structure of the surrounding anatomy". A summary of this may be found in:

    Dissection Tiling
It has long been known that for any two polygons of equal area (or groups of polygons adding to the same area) there is a collection of smaller polygonal pieces that can be arranged to form either of the two polygons; this partition into smaller pieces is known as a dissection . For instance, a square may be partitioned into four polygonal pieces, which can be rearranged to form an equilateral triangle of the same area. This idea was used by Hilbert to develop an axiomatic theory of plane area. Dissection has some potential application to random generation of points; it is easy to generate uniformly distributed points in a square, so by dissecting the square to another shape one can generate points in that shape. Dissection is also closely related to the Banach-Tarski paradox (which concerns itself with similar set-theoretic partitions). But problems of dissection also have more recreational aspects, concerned with minimizing the number of pieces in dissections of specific shapes. I am interested here in a different but closely related problem: partitioning a polygon or group of polygons into a dissection such that the pieces can be rearranged to tile the plane. Each piece must be used with a density proportional to its area (otherwise one could just take a square out of the middle of one polygon and not use the other pieces). Any polygon can be dissected and rearranged to form a unit-width rectangle, so any group of polygons has a

    Applications and related fields
Questions regarding the underlying spaces (and algebraic invariants) are included on the topology pages. Classic questions regarding polygons and regular solids are included on the geometry pages. There is a separate section on constructibility of polygons (and other things) with ruler and compass Many of these questions are related to themes arising in geometric visualization, a topic covered reasonably well on the net. In particular, the newsgroup comp.graphics.algorithms considers such themes from time to time. Some such topics are here, others on the page for computational geometry

Dissection This page involves problems of cutting a region (such as a polygon into the plane) into pieces (possibly putting them together to form a different polygon). Related topics include tiling (in which the whole plane is cut into pieces) and triangulation (in which a region is cut into triangles or higher-dimensional simplices).
    • On angles whose squared trigonometric functions are rational , J. Conway, C. Radin, and L. Sadun. This somewhat technical paper on the theory of Dehn invariants (used to determine whether there exists a dissection from one polyhedron to another) makes the theory more computationally effective. It contains the fascinating observation that there should exist a dissection that combines pieces from a dodecahedron, icosahedron, and icosidodecahedron to form a single large cube. How many pieces are needed?
    • ARTiP : an automated rectangular tiling prover. This system uses a constraint-propagation algorithm, similar to Waltz' famous line-labeling technique, to automatically find dissections of planar regions into rectangles.
    • Henry Baker's hypertext version of HAKMEM includes a dissection of square and hexagon , depicted below.
