Describe the appearance of various organs found in the earthworm. • Name the organs that make up various systems of the earthworm. Materials Safety goggles, dissecting pins, gloves, forceps lab apron, scissors, paper towel, scalpel, water, dissecting probe, preserved earthworm, hand lens, dissection tray. Purpose: In this lab, you will dissect an earthworm in order to observe the external and internal structures of earthworm anatomy. Background: Among the most familiar invertebrate animals are the earthworms, members of the phylum Annelida . The word annelida means "ringed" and refers to a series of rings or segments that make up the bodies of the members of this phylum. Internally, septa , or dividing walls, are located between the segments. There may be more than 100 segments in an adult worm. The

    Objectives:
Describe the appearance of various organs found in a crayfish.
Name the organs that make up systems of the crayfish. Materials:
safety goggles, gloves, magnifying glass, a lab apron, plastic ziplock bag preserved crayfish, pen, dissecting tray, paper towels, scissors, forceps, dissecting needle, and dissecting pins. Purpose:
In this lab, you will observe the external structures of a crayfish and dissect it to study its internal structures and systems. Background:
Like all crustaceans, a crayfish has a fairly hard exoskeleton that covers its body. As shown in the diagram on the next page, its body is divided into two main parts, the cephalothorax and the abdomen. The cephalothorax consists of the cephalic (or head) region and the thoracic region. The part of the exoskeleton that covers the cephalothorax is called the carapace. The abdomen is located behind the cephalothorax and consists of six clearly divided segments. The cephalothorax consists of 13 segments. Each segment of both the cephalothorax and the abdomen contains a pair of appendages. The head (or cephalic) region has five pairs of appendages. The antennules are organs of balance, touch, and taste. Long

Wainwright, New Rochelle, New York, Journal of Recreational Mathematics, 26:2 (1994) 147 How many ways can a square be dissected into six similar triangles? Bob Wainwright To: math-fun@cs.arizona.edu Subject: Dissection of a square into six similar triangles How many different ways can a square be dissected into six similar triangles? Re-arrangements of a given tile set do not count. Bob Wainwright Life1ine@aol.com Date: Wed, 25 Oct 1995 12:22:44 MST From: "Richard Schroeppel" Date: Sat, 28 Oct 1995 12:07:52 -0400 To: math-fun@cs.arizona.edu Subject: Re: Similarity Mainly to Dan Asimov: > I forget whether a mirror-image of an arbitrary triangle is considered > to be similar. Can you remind me? Good question. With regard to dissection of a square into six similar triangles, yes, the mirror image IS considered to be similar. Dan, I'm not really sure how this problem eventually got posted but did you receive a message indicating the total number of combinations? Bob Wainwright Life1ine@aol.com Date: Mon, 30 Oct 1995 14:32:32 -0800 From: Dean Hickerson To: math-fun@cs.arizona.edu Subject: Re: Dissecting a square into similar triangles The problem of cutting a square into similar triangles is allegedly discussed in: Tilings of polygons with similar triangles, by M. Laczkovich, Combinatorica 10 (1990) 281-306. I haven't seen the article itself, only a reference to it (in the book "Algebra and Tiling: Homomorphisms in the Service of Geometry" by Sherman Stein and Sandor Szabo), so i'm not sure if Laczkovich completely determines which triangles work. He did show that there are only 3 triangles that aren't right triangles which work, namely those with angles (pi/8, pi/4, 5 pi/8), (pi/4, pi/3, 5 pi/12), and (pi/12, pi/4, 2 pi/3). Also, it is impossible to tile a square with triangles all of whose angles, when measured in degrees, are even integers. Dean Hickerson dean@ucdmath.ucdavis.edu

    Read Kerrie's story now

A great deal has changed since the 1920s, when dissection became commonplace. Today, many people are concerned about the complex ecosystems that are destroyed when millions of animals are removed from their habitats for this purpose. When taken from breeding facilities, animals invariably suffer as they are raised, prepared, and killed for dissection.
Thanks to state-of-the-art technology, this picture is changing rapidly. New teaching methods have arrived, and students are reaping the benefits. Digital Frog NeoTek , and DryLab Students and teachers are choosing better and more humane teaching methods, paving the way for more efficient and effective learning. I hate pop. I hate the stars, the composers, the writers but most of the entire concept itself. Pop is manufactured for the not so discerning ear and not quite intellectual mind and every time I hear even one beat I shudder. Shudder, for I fear each stray note will somehow infest in my mind and slowly eat me away.
But enough of that, pop music sucks as does everyone who listens to it so if you like pop you won't really like my site.
