The Starfish Dissection Tutorial
DISSECTION OF A STARFISH
Welcome to the home page for learning to dissect a starfish The intent of this web site is to teach students how to dissect a starfish and learn its anatomy. This project will show the internal and external organs of a starfish and engage students to interact with this program. The site will provide visual aids; using digitized images of the preserved starfish, and digitally processed video of the actual dissection at various intervals. This tutorial is a step by step guide through the dissection of the starfish. Back to Top We hope this site will be useful to students and teachers.

Virtual Frog Dissection Kit
This award-winning interactive program is part of the "Whole Frog" project . You can interactively dissect a (digitized) frog named Fluffy, and play the Virtual Frog Builder Game. The interactive Web pages are available in a number of languages Click on the frog to dive into the kit. Help and additional information available include a tutorial , an overview of how the system works, a paper that was presented at WWW '94, and a paper that was published in COMPCON '95. For some other interesting frog and biology-related pages, see Also of Interest Frog statistics , including how many times it has been accessed in different languages. We welcome your suggestions and comments . Comments from teachers and students are especially welcome. Please note, however, that we are computer scientists, not biologists. We will not be able to help you with your homework (see biology-related information for help). Also, we don't know of any animals other than the frog that have a computer-graphics based virtual dissection page. We get frequent requests for this information. If someone has done such a page for a fetal pig, cat, etc., we'd be interested in hearing about it. The Center for Science and Engineering Education contains links to other educational Web sites at Berkeley Lab.

University of Washington Dissection Alternatives
View Current Signatures Sign the Petition To: Directors of the Univ. of WA Zoology and Biology Departments We, the undersigned, demand that the University of Washington Zoology and Biology Departments create an official amendment, to their department policies' statements and rules, requiring all classes, in which lab work involving the use of living or dead nonhuman animals is required, be required to include in the syllabi for the classes an animal-free alternative for all students who are opposed to using nonhuman animals for any reason. The amendment will require all professors to offer alternatives that will not adversely effect the grade or success of the students who choose an alternative to nonhuman animal use. The amendment will also require all professors to openly offer said alternative in written form via the class syllabi as well as oral form prior to the onset of any lab exercise in which nonhuman animals will be used. Let it be so. Sincerely

WHOLE FROG PROJECT
Introduction
The DSD "Whole Frog" project is intended to introduce the concepts of modern, computer based 3D visualization, and at the same time to demonstrate the power of whole body, 3D imaging of anatomy as a curriculum tool. The goal of the Whole Frog Project is to provide high school biology classes the ability to explore the anatomy of a frog by using data from high resolution MRI imaging and from mechanical sectioning, together with 3D surface and volume rendering software to visualize the anatomical structures of the intact animal. Ultimately we intend to be able to "enter the heart and fly down blood vessels, poking our head out at any point to see the structure of the surrounding anatomy". A summary of this may be found in:

Welcome to the Virtual Fetal Pig Dissection Our simulation of the dissection of the fetal pig was designed to provide an alternative exercise for students in our introductory biology class as well as provide review material for students prior to their lab practical exam. If you want a fuller explanation of why we developed this simulation please read our essay published in 1999. We welcome off-campus use of this simulation. However, for proper use you must configure your browser with up-to-date Shockwave plug-ins that allow viewing of Macromedia Director animations. These Shockwave plug-ins are free and available After you have visited the site we would appreciate your comments. Please help us improve this site and justify to funding agencies that their money was well spent.

INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this document is to draw attention to discrepancies between project documents or events, and statements issued by the Minister for Industry, Resources and Energy, his department and others. It shows that in many instances, the Minister or his department have provided answers or information that can only be described as distorted, misleading or simply not true. This document was initially assembled and released in August 2000. That version drew on material from the draft Hansard of Senate committee hearings on 2 and 3 May 2000. This revised version takes account of corrections made to the draft Hansard. In one section, comments attributed to Mr Harris in the draft are now attributed to Mr Farrow. That correction has necessitated the removal of some of my comments from the original copy. The opportunity has been taken to add some further comment or explanation on some of the statements. Comments in the following are cross-referenced to media releases from the Minister or his department or to statements made in Senate Committee hearings. The following codes are used in the cross-references:

Caution:
The Sheep Brain Dissection Guide Uses Frames And It May Not Be Compatible With All Web Browsers!!
You have several options when proceeding through this guide. As you progress, you will see the image of the brain being dissected in this window. The window to the right will hold the dissection instrutions or the details on a particular structure you are interested in. The window in the lower right holds the options buttons. There are four.
This button moves you to the previously visited image.
This button moves you to the next consecutive image.
This button takes you to a page of options. You may choose to:
  • search by name of structure search by plate number view fully labeled images (the default) pause before labeling images (to quiz yourself) random plate selection (also, to test yourself)

This button allows you to toggle between labeled and unlabeled images. On many of the images you will see brackets such as the ones below. A bracket of this type is used to designate an area or region of the brain.
Brackets, or lines, which end in small circles designate hollow structures.

Students shunning animal dissection ritual
Story Tools (AP) Increasing numbers of students are asking to opt out of the science class ritual of dissecting frogs or fetal pigs, branding the practice cruel and insisting they can learn as much from computer simulations. A 16-year-old honor student in Baltimore was removed from her anatomy class last week after refusing to dissect a cat, then allowed back in with the option of computer alternatives after protesters picketed the high school. In Las Vegas, the Clark County School Board voted earlier this year to let students opt out of dissections if they have parental support. "They won't learn much with their eyes closed because they're disgusted." Amy Richards, student opposing dissection The new policy was adopted after a petition drive led by eighth-grader Laurie Wolff, an A student who received a C in a science class two years earlier after declining to cut up an earthworm. Anti-dissection students also appealed for policy changes this year at a school board meeting in Little Chute, Wisconsin, and last year before a state Senate committee in Vermont.
