Ultra DMA IDE only supports two drives per channel and can only handle a small range of internal devices. Another benefit of SCSI systems on the other hand is that they impose less overhead on the processor because all data I/O, controlling and device handling is handled primarily by the SCSI adapter card and so frees the processor to fetch data and run applications much quicker than the conventional DMA IDE system.
