Arches National Park This national park features the greatest concentration of natural stone arches in the world. To date, over 2,000 arches have been found and roads and trails in the park lead to many of them. The park is open year-round, and a 21 mile paved road leads visitors to major points of interest like the Window Section, Balanced Rock, Park Avenue and Wolfe Ranch. A graded dirt road goes to Klondike Bluffs. Just off the main road, many short trails lead to dramatic arches, including a 3-mile round trip to famed Delicate Arch, the arch on the Utah Centennial license plate. Ranger-guided hikes are conducted through the Fiery Furnace section during the summer (fee required). Entrance fees are collected. The visitor center, located at the entrance to the park is open year-round. Located 25 miles south of I-70 just off U.S. 191 and 5 miles north of Moab. Dead Horse Point State Park Old-time cowboys using the point as a natural corral inadvertently left a band of horses trapped for so long they died of thirst on this almost isolated island-mesa. They stop quickly to hand fistfuls of dollars to two Bureau of Land Management clerks manning the fee station. The stream of traffic is nonstop, and Jason Turner says that it’s not a busy day. Turner says an estimated 200,000 people visit Slick Rock every year. In the parking area, mostly 30-something men donned in bright Lycra fit front wheels into forks and test brakes while the wind whips through the 100-car lot. The whine of two-stroke engines can be heard in every direction.

Just past the rock, screened by some scrub brush and trees so it can't be seen until the last second, the path drops into a small stream bed and up the other bank. It keeps running up the side of the ravine, disappearing at the crest, like a roller coaster made out of dirt, roots and rocks. It's a shame no one can ride it. It's a shame it doesn't exist. Someday it might, if recreational vehicle riders are able to clear a path through state laws, rules and regulations. Land access for off-road recreational vehicles - snowmobiles, dirt bikes, ATVs - has come grudgingly in Ohio. Environmental group opposition, a lack of legal riding space and concerns over landowner liability have made it hard for riders to find fun and legal places to ride.

Nova Fuel Use Study Results are In! Herbert Research has released the draft of the NOVA Fuel Use Study.( for the full text you can visit the www.iac.wa.gov website) The results show that: 21% of NOVA revenues come from motorized use, including dirt bikes, snowmobiles, ATV’s and 4X4s. 30% come from non-motorized trail related activities, including hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and cross country skiing 49% come from other recreational activities such as camping, sightseeing, hunting berry-picking and fishing The final results of the study will be adopted by the Interagency Committee for Outdoor Recreation at their January 23 meeting. Historical Note: The NOVA plan sets policies to guide expenditures under Washington State Non-Hiway and Off Road Vehicle Activities (NOVA) Program. The NOVA plan provides funding to various local, state and federal agencies. Funds are used to plan, acquire and build and maintain facilities, and manage off road vehicles (ORV) and non-Hiway road recreational opportunities. The results of this new study will likely change the way the IAC distributes funds.

It is pretty much unridable and definitely not raceable," said Barry Lyster, owner of Crosstrails Adventures, a local business co-sponsoring the first Race the Ridge bike festival. The trail was to be used for the festival's featured downhill race. Lyster said signs informing riders the trail was being groomed for the race have been erected for several weeks, and the damage wasn't done until after those signs went up. "It wasn't one rider that didn't know what he was doing," Lyster said, adding race organizers have gone through all the proper regulatory channels and have applied to the B.C. Ministry of Forests for a permit to host the race.

RICHFIELD FIELD OFFICE Need: Recreational Opportunity Spectrum (ROS) Analysis of Public Lands on the Colorado Plateau Issue: Although there is data and research on OHV impacts in other areas and other types of terrain, no comprehensive area-wide recreational survey has ever been done. There is no specific research on the impacts of various types of OHV's on Plateau ecosystems as defined by climate, soil type and vegetative cover. What are the impacts from use of four-wheelers, dirt bikes, mountain bikes, etc. to wildlife, soils, sedimentation rates, and vegetation? Knowledge is needed on user demographics and the types of activities currently being conducted as well as what future activities might be anticipated. Application: This type of project would gather data on what the needs and desires of the public recreationist are and what level of facilities and services are required. Impacts of recreational use would be better understood and reduced in terms of their effects on wildlife populations, riparian areas, watersheds, natural areas, etc. Types of uses could be better designed to fit land designations so as to improve the recreational experience and the health of the land. This type of data will allow greater predictive abilities and enhance the effectiveness of mitigation measures when analyzing soil disturbing recreational activities on public lands. According to a mountain biking (MTB) web page (http://www.mtb-bike.com), "The commercial Mountain Bike evolution didn't start until 1974 and its first production bikes didn't appear in stores until about 10 years later". (Lower gearing, fat, knobby tires, sturdier construction, but particularly the sealed bearing which could be ridden in dirt without getting destroyed are what made "mountain" (off-road) bicycling possible.) Partly for this reason, and partly because the MTB is, from one point of view, just a special case of an ORV (off-road vehicle), environmentalists and scientists have been slow to study and recognize the special threat that the mountain bike represents to wildlife. Although there are many studies of ORVs, I am not aware of any solid scientific studies specifically on MTBs and their effects on wildlife. To most environmentalists, bicycles have always been the epitome of good. We are so used to comparing bikes to cars, that it never occurred to us that the bicycle would be ever used for anything bad. Indeed, replacing motor vehicles with bicycles deserves our adoration. But anything can be used for good or evil, and using bikes to expand human domination of wildlife habitat is clearly harmful.
