104. Civil Rights In Mississippi Digital Archive
The Civil Rights in Mississippi digital Archive is an Internetaccessible, fully searchable database of digitized versions of rare and unique library and archival resources on race relations sponsored by The University of Southern Mississippi libraries.Mississippi was a focal point in the struggle for civil rights in America, and Hattiesburg, where USM is located, had the largest and most successful Freedom Summer project in 1964. The original sources collected in the state represent local collections with truly national significance. Digitization provides an opportunity to make indigenous resources of this type available to a worldwide audience.

Digital Library and Archives
Scholarly Publishing, Library Services, and Archives
Illuminated Texts from our collection. Digital Library and Archives, University Libraries, Virginia Tech, began in 2000 as a merger of two smaller library units: Scholarly Communications Project (SCP) and Special Collections. SCP's focus: work with the University community to create online resources such as electronic journals. Special Collections' focus: collecting/preserving rare book collections, manuscript collections, and the University Archives. Together, as DLA we maintain access to electronic journals, electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs), digital images (VT ImageBase), the IAWA Biographical Database and other digital resources. Through DLA, Special Collections provides patron access to a growing number of original collections in digital format.

ARL Digital Initiatives Database
Welcome to the ARL Digital Initiatives Database, a collaboration between the University of Illinois at Chicago and ARL. The ARL Digital Initiatives Database is a Web-based registry for descriptions of digital initiatives in or involving libraries. The goal of the effort is to capture basic information for a wide range of digital initiatives. It is intended that the database include a wide variety of digital projects. "Digital Initiative" is not defined in order to encourage the broadest possible interpretation thereby making the database a richer resource.
About the Database
The database provides access to initiatives underway highlighting technical features, policy choices, and subject matter of the content. Libraries are encouraged to register information about all projects both large and small in scope. Pointers to the details of the projects and contact persons are also be provided. Contributors to this database are welcome to provide information about projects in progress, in planning stages, or already completed. A goal in developing the database is to provide a venue for those in the library community to share project specifics as well as lessons learned.
History
The idea grew from the comments made during discussions at the October 1997 ARL Membership Meeting calling for greater information-sharing of lessons from ongoing digitizing projects. The database is designed for libraries to submit information directly. ARL member libraries are encouraged to register their own projects.

    The Latest
Standards in a Time of Constant Change , The Journal of Academic Librarianship, v. 31, n. 3, pp 280-283
The term "standard" once implied something that was fixed and would not change. This meaning of the term is no longer viable in an environment where technology is in a state of constant change. The whole standards landscape, and the organizations that support it, is going through a significant change of its own in an attempt to keep up with the world around it.
Understanding Metadata and Its Purposes , The Journal of Academic Librarianship, v. 31, n. 2, pp 160-163
The main message here is that any particular metadata is useful only in that it solves a specific problem. When you are looking at a metadata format, whether it is MARC21, METS, MODS, Dublin Core, or any one of many dozens of metadata formats that have been developed, you must understand it in its context. And when looking at a metadata format with the idea of making use of it for a project of yours, that context is key to determining if the metadata will indeed work for you.

APIS is a collaborative online database and library of digitized images of papyri and ostraca (potsherds with incriptions) dating from the period 400 BCE to 800 CE. By 2002 the APIS database contained some 18,000 catalog records reflecting the complete papyrological collections of Columbia, Duke, Princeton, Berkeley, Michigan and Yale. High quality digital images of approximately 7,000 of these items have been linked to the database. Additional North American papyrus collections are currently being added, with European partnerships in the planning stage. APIS has been funded in large part by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

    Preface
The Digital Library Tool Kit was sponsored by Sun Microsystems Computer Company in the hopes of addressing some of the leading questions that academic institutions, public libraries, government agencies, and museums face in trying to develop digital content and distribute it on the Worldwide Web. Librarians and Campus CIOs are dealing with a plethora of new technologies and issues in the realm of Digital Libraries. The evolution and coalescing of Java applications, digital object standards, Internet access, electronic commerce, digital media management models, search engines, and library automation systems, is causing educators, CIOs, and librarians to rethink many of their traditional goals and modes of operation. As one of the leading technology providers to the Education and Library Communities, Sun discerned the need for a comprehensive, state-of-the-art document that could give some guidance in the nascent field of Digital Libraries. We hope The Digital Library Tool Kit is of use to you as you explore new directions and technologies.

    120. Libraries In Today's Digital Age: The Copyright Controversy
Article on how libraries are facing new challenges relating to copyright in the new digital age.
    http://www.michaellorenzen.com/eric/copyright.html
    by Russell, Carrie
THE COPY In addition, digital copies have a transitory nature. Unlike a book you can Purchase and own, digital copies you may access today, may not be there tomorrow. Thus, for libraries, traditional functions that depend on the ownership and relative permanence of a copy, like library lending, collection development, and preservation have been radically altered by digital technologies. FIRST SALE, THEN AND NOW For libraries, lending material to library users is a core public service. First sale allows libraries to share their lawfully acquired copies with users. Moreover, interlibrary loan is vital to libraries with limited collection development funds. Poorer libraries can borrow copies from bigger libraries to meet user requests. As more materials become available in only digital formats that cannot be loaned, libraries fear that they will be unable to meet the information needs of users. Libraries cannot afford all materials and rely on sharing. New business models for electronic works are being considered and tested. Already, many libraries are purchasing electronic books and pay prices formulated on the number of lending transactions rather than the purchase of one copy of an electronic book. COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT Libraries have had to shift their understanding of collection development from an ownership model to an access model. Generally, libraries cannot "purchase to own" materials that are only available in digital formats. Instead, libraries "rent to access" digital materials. This requires an ongoing subscription fee (much like a periodical subscription fee) from the library to license the materials from vendors and publishers.
