Aims and audience
Digital library research brings together a number of disciplines and practitioner communities, creating a stimulating environment for debate and an opportunity for establishing collaboration. ECDL provides a forum for the exchange of ideas between scientific disciplines and fosters joint initiatives with application communities. Involvement of researchers and practitioners from computing and information science disciplines is well established at ECDL. Increasingly these disciplines are engaging in discussion and co-operation with other groups concerned with knowledge management. ECDL 2004 encourages involvement from a wide range of disciplines and looks forward to continuing contributions from usability experts, educationalists, developers of eLearning systems, and from those working within the eScience and GRID communities. The continued success of ECDL rests on the exchange of ideas and experience between these groups.

Welcome!
The Joint Conference on Digital Libraries is a major international forum focusing on digital libraries and associated technical, practical, and social issues. The theme of JCDL2005 highlights the powerful role of digital libraries as cyberinfrastructure. This cyberinfrastructure has the potential to engender the creation of powerful new tools, research methodologies, and processes that will enable scientists and learners to investigate the natural world, the social world, and the human-built environment in new and previously unimaginable ways. As global interests in computation, information management, networking, and intelligent sensing converge, the conduct of research and education will be transformed. Last modified July 18, 2005.

In the past, global networks have usually transported textual information, but there is a growing need for these networks to transport other forms of information such as images, video, and audio. Until recently, electronic information sources served mainly specialized clients, but now these sources will be accessed by a wide range of users, ranging from computer specialists, discipline experts, engineers, and the general public, including novice computer users and students at all levels. These trends have created an emerging, important discipline: digital libraries. Several US agencies, including NASA, ARPA, and NSF, have made available over the past few years a considerable amount of money to support research in this field. Other countries, including Canada, the UK, France, Italy, and the Netherlands have also invested in digital library development:

In the late 1990s, the internet became so large, it was necessary to create a way to make searching it less daunting a task. Two solutions dominated the search algorithms: robots and directories. Yahoo, a young upstart internet company, created one of the first directories that received wide use. While this solution satisfied searchers for a while, it soon became apparent that Yahoo's management were paying more attention to advertising revenues than its web directory. The Yahoo staff couldn't seem to keep pace with the growth of the internet, and link rot became a problem for the links that were already included. The ODP was created in June 1998 in response to the shortcomings of Yahoo's directory. Rich Skrenta and Bob Truel came up with the idea of getting volunteers to index the internet. If they just had more manpower, they reasoned, the directory could keep up with the growth and decay cycle of the internet. Furthermore, the results of this human-powered directory would be made available to any person or company free of charge.
