    I. Introduction
At the TEI and XML in Digital Libraries Workshop held at the Library of Congress on June 30-July 1, 1998, three working groups were formed. Group 2 was charged with developing a set of recommendations for libraries using the TEI Guidelines in electronic text encoding. Representatives from six libraries met at the Library of Congress on November 12-13, 1998. The Task Force met again at ALA mid-winter (January 1999) to incorporate comments and finalize the draft. The revised recommendations were circulated to the conference working group in May 1999 and presented at the joint annual meeting of the Association of Computers and the Humanities and Association of Literary and Linguistic Computing in June 1999. Version 1.0 was circulated for comments in August 1999. Return to top

    Introduction
IDL conducts research on the design and use of Digital Libraries. It forms part of the Middlesex University Interaction Design Centre (IDC) . Digital Libraries offer great potential benefits but are currently hampered by, among other things, poor usability. Existing libraries provide the core essential functionality: they serve as structured repositories of multimedia documents, and documents can be added to and retrieved from the library. The quality of the interaction depends on such systems also satisfying various non-functional requirements that relate to usability. Some of work in RIDL is focusing directly on Digital Libraries, and is particularly concerned with designing for usability. Other research is on core computer science, but using Digital Libraries as a challenging and valuable test domain.

Jenny Craven Increasing information choices through web-based technologies. The 2001 IFLA pre-conference SLB took place in Washington with a theme of Digital Libraries for the Blind and the Culture of Learning in the Information Age [1]. Papers delivered at the 2001 conference were from a wide range of subjects relating to digital libraries for the blind. Subject areas included meeting the educational needs of children and youth through libraries for the blind, digital library services and education, creating inclusive models of service and building small digital libraries for the blind. This report will focus on a selection of papers looking at how the development of the Internet and web-based technologies can be used to increase information choices for people who are blind and to enhance a culture of learning in the information age. Further details about the conference can be found on the IFLA SLB web site [2]. As a tool for the delivery of library services the Internet should offer increasing possibilities to users who are print disabled. It should enable people to access information in a format that is appropriate to their needs, which could be in a braille or audio format, or through assistive technologies. These may include speech output, braille output, tactile devices or even just through simple adjustments to a browser. Despite growing technological developments, however, a paper on

    NLH RSS Directory - Preview
    Dear all
We're now pleased to be able to offer you the preview version of the NLH RSS Directory, available from the Preview link on the right hand side of the NLH homepage - www.library.nhs.uk
The directory is designed to be both browsable by categories, and searchable. For those who are new to RSS, there are help files and tutorials to get you started, available from the right hand column of the directory itself.
The directory is still being populated with feeds - if you would like to submit a feed for inclusion, you can use the link on the right hand side of the page.
We'd be grateful for your feedback and comments on the directory before we go for a full launch later in the year - these can be sent to nelh@cfh.nhs.uk

Activities within the DELOS Network of Excellence on Digital Libraries funded by the EU's Sixth Framework Programme started on January 1, 2004. Digital Libraries (DL) have been made possible through the integration and use of a number of IC technologies, the availability of digital content on a global scale and a strong demand for users who are now online. They are destined to become essential part of the information infrastructure in the 21st century. The DELOS network intends to conduct a joint program of activities aimed at integrating and coordinating the ongoing research activities of the major European teams working in Digital Library - related areas with the goal of developing the next generation Digital Library technologies. The objective is to:
    • define unifying and comprehensive theories and frameworks over the life-cycle of Digital Library information

    Thesis Type Stuff
My research question is ``How can novel metadata be automatically extracted, analysed and used within digital libraries ?'' My main supervisor is David Bainbridge , but I also work with Ian Witten and Sally Jo Cunningham . The introduction to my most recent progress report Metadata is used in libraries to build catalogues and manage their collections. Catalogues typically contain author, title, publication date and subject information for each document in the library's collections. There is, however, a great deal of other metadata not dealt with by these systems including: metadata related to the readers' accesses of the documents; subject area reviews and bibliographies; figures and tables within the documents; and domain specific dictionaries of terms and acronyms. By far the greatest source of metadata avaliable to libraries is the documents themselves (the ``full text''), with explicit metadata in bibliographies, tables of contents, tables of figures and indexes and implicit metadata in the structure of the text, for instance the terminology introduced and used and the other documents referred to. It is this novel, non-traditional, metadata that I intend to explore in my thesis.

    Introduction
The Digital Libraries Initiative (DLI) was the result of a community-based process which began in the late 1980s with informal discussions between researchers and agency program managers. These discussions progressed to planning workshops designed to develop research values and agendas and culminated in the National Science Foundation (NSF)/Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)/National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Research in Digital Libraries Initiative announced in late 1993. With the selection and funding of the six DLI projects [ http://www.cise.nsf.gov/iis/dli_home.html ], interest and activities related to digital libraries accelerated rapidly. The six DLI projects became highly visible and influential efforts, and grew in scope, participation and influence. NSF and DARPA funded additional workshops as part of the DLI to develop consensus on specific digital libraries topical areas and boundaries, to bring together researchers to stimulate cross-disciplinary interaction, and to ponder together how best to adapt to a rapidly changing global information environment. By now, researchers and practitioners from many disciplines have been drawn into digital libraries research and related activities, from subject domains reaching far beyond the sciences into the arts and humanities.
