DROUGHT INFORMATION July 26, 2005 Limit-Feeding Concentrate Diets to Beef Cows
KC Olson, Ph.D., PAS, Dipl. ACAN
Beef Nutrition and Management Specialist
Commercial Agriculture Program
Alternative nutritional management of beef cows is called for when hay and pasture stocks are low. Harsh conditions are predicted for much of the Midwest during the winter of 2001 and that coming close on the heels of dry summer and fall weather. With a likely shortfall in forage availability, cow-calf operators may wish to consider limit-feeding concentrate diets to mature cows. This practice can be an economical alternative to feeding forage. When compared based on the amount of feed energy supplied per unit of weight, grains and grain-milling byproducts are often less expensive than hay. Limit-feeding beef cows involves supplying the animal with just enough grain or grain byproducts to maintain its body condition, produce a targeted amount of milk, and, if necessary, to achieve a targeted amount of weight gain. This can be accomplished with little forage added to the diet. Compared with a standard forage diet, limit-fed diets are more energy dense. The amount of these high-energy rations made available for consumption on a daily basis must be closely controlled to prevent digestive disorders (e.g., acidosis, founder, and bloat). As a result, limit-feeding requires a fairly high degree of management skill to implement safely. Several items must be kept in mind when considering a limit-feeding program for beef cows. Any time ruminant animals are switched from a high-forage to a high-concentrate diet, resident microorganisms in the rumen may require up to 14 days to adapt to the new feeding regime. As a result, changes in the diet must be achieved by very gradually increasing over time the amount of grain relative to hay in the ration. The preferred adaptation period is 14 days in length to accommodate the switch from a high-forage to a high-concentrate diet. Conversely, ruminant livestock can usually be switched from a high-concentrate to a high-forage diet quite rapidly.

High Fiber Diet Purpose
Dietary fiber is the part of a plant that provides and maintains the plant's structure. Cellulose, hemicellulose, polysaccharides, pectins, gums, mucilages, and lignins are dietary fibers. These fibers are unrelated chemically, however, they all have one thing in common they can't be digested by the human body. For this reason, they can help correct disorders of the large intestine (colon), and keep it functioning normally. Therefore, it is important to increase the amount of fiber in the diet. Function of The Colon
The main job of the colon is to complete the digestion process. This occurs by removing excess water from food wastes entering from the small intestine. When wastes pass through the intestines too quickly, not enough water is absorbed. Watery stools and diarrhea are the result. In contrast, if the passage of waste is too slow, too much water is absorbed. This results in hard stools and constipation, which often leads to straining. These simple problems occasionally lead to more serious disorders. The Importance of Dietary Fiber
Fiber (also called roughage or bulk) promotes the wavelike contractions that keep food moving through the intestine. Also, high-fiber foods expand the inside walls of the colon. This eases the passage of waste. Fibrous substances pass through the intestine undigested. They also absorb many times their weight in water, resulting in softer, bulkier stools.

The spleen and stomach are both responsible for transporting Gu Qi throughout the body but especially to the upper and lower limbs to nourish muscles and bones. If this function the spleen and stomach is deficient the limbs will become flaccid and desensitized.

On this page: The digestive system. Crohn's disease causes inflammation in the small intestine. Crohn's disease usually occurs in the lower part of the small intestine, called the ileum, but it can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus. The inflammation extends deep into the lining of the affected organ. The inflammation can cause pain and can make the intestines empty frequently, resulting in diarrhea. Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), the general name for diseases that cause inflammation in the intestines. Crohn's disease can be difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are similar to other intestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and to another type of IBD called ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation and ulcers in the top layer of the lining of the large intestine. Crohn's disease affects men and women equally and seems to run in some families. About 20 percent of people with Crohn's disease have a blood relative with some form of IBD, most often a brother or sister and sometimes a parent or child.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease What are inflammatory Bowel Diseases? These are disorders where the bowel becomes red and inflamed. In ulcerative colitis the lining of the large bowel is involved. In Crohn's disease (named after an American physician) any part of the digestive tract can be affected and the full thickness of the bowel wall can become inflamed. Crohn's disease, when it affects the colon, and ulcerative colitis are similar so it is sometimes hard to tell which one a patient has. What is the cause of Ulcerative Colitis of Crohn's Disease? The cause or causes are not known. It is possible that affected people have an abnormal defence mechanism against the bacteria which are normally present in the gut. A long-term reaction to a particular bacterium or virus may be important. People in some families are more susceptible than in others, but the chance of passing this tendency on to children is small. What are the symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis? The disease can give trouble on and off throughout life. Most of the time, most sufferers feel well with no symptoms this means the disease is inactive (in remission). The disease flares up from time to time and becomes active (relapse). At each flare-up the symptoms can be better, worse or the same as the time before. The main symptoms are:

91. What Is The Heartburn?
In fact heartburn has nothing to do with the heart it is a digestive problem . Include more fruit, vegetables and high-fibre foods in your diet.
http://www.bdf.org.uk/leaflets/hrtburn.html
What is the Heartburn? Potentially dangerous confusion can arise when someone neglects their heart pain believing it to be heartburn. What Causes Heartburn? Acid is present in the stomach to digest food. Heartburn occurs when small amounts of this acid rise up into the gullet (oesophagus) - the tube which carries food from the mouth to the stomach. This is called reflux. The gullet, unlike the stomach, does not have a protective lining. So when it is exposed to the acid, it can become inflamed and painful. Why Doesn't Everyone get Heartburn? Some known factors that can lead to heartburn include:
pregnancy
smoking
eating large meals, especially near bedtime
being overweight
bending a lot
wearing tight clothing around the waist. In most of these cases, it is the increased pressure which overcomes the normal muscle contraction and causes heartburn. Smoking, on the other hand, relaxes the muscle around the gullet, with the same result. What is Hiatus Hernia?

Andy O'Dell has spent most of his life suffering. He just didn't know why until recently. After years of visiting doctors for severe fatigue and abdominal cramping, the 22-year-old from Jupiter along with his mother, father and younger brother was diagnosed with celiac disease. The disease, also known as celiac sprue, is a digestive condition caused by an intolerance to gluten proteins found in all forms of wheat, barley, and rye. If untreated, it can lead to vitamin and mineral deficiencies, osteoporosis, infertility and central and peripheral nervous system disorders. Three million Americans, one in every 150, are believed to suffer from celiac disease 10 times more people then previously thought, according to a National Institute of Health panel that reviewed the disease last month.

PROBLEMS OF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
It goes without saying that all organ systems are important to the continued well-being of the body as a whole. But the role of the digestive system is probably the most important. A healthy digestive system underpins the function of the whole system by digesting and absorbing nutrients, neutralising toxins and infective agents and eliminating waste and unwanted products. Along with skin disease the digestive tract is the organ system most frequently affected by dietary intolerance. This means correct dietary choice is one of the most effective ways of treating and preventing digestive disorders.

Indigestion
Definition
Indigestion, which is sometimes called dyspepsia , is a general term covering a group of nonspecific symptoms in the digestive tract. It is often described as a feeling of fullness, bloating, nausea, heartburn , or gassy discomfort in the chest or abdomen. The symptoms develop during meals or shortly afterward. In most cases, indigestion is a minor problem that often clears up without professional treatment. Description
Indigestion or dyspepsia is a widespread condition, estimated to occur in 25% of the adult population of the United States. Most people with indigestion do not feel sick enough to see a doctor; nonetheless, it is a common reason for office visits. About 3% of visits to primary care doctors are for indigestion.
Physical causes
The symptoms associated with indigestion have a variety of possible physical causes, ranging from commonplace food items to serious systemic disorders:
  • Diet. Milk, milk products, alcoholic beverages, tea, and coffee cause indigestion in some people because they stimulate the stomach's production of acid. Medications. Certain prescription drugs as well as over-the- counter medications can irritate the stomach lining. These medications include

Digestive disorder caused by gluten is common
    By John Easton
Medical center Public Affairs A massive, multicenter study has found that celiac disease, a digestive disorder, is much more common in the United States than previously believed. The study, published in the Feb. 10 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine , found that one out of every 133 Americans has celiac disease. Since only about one out of 4,700 Americans has been diagnosed, this means that 97 percent of cases in this country go undetected. The prevalence is far higher for those considered at-risk. One out of 22 people with a diagnosed first-degree relative has the disease, one out of 39 with a diagnosed second-degree relative and one out of 56 people with symptoms but no diagnosed relative have the disease. A digestive disorder, celiac disease is triggered by the protein gluten, which is found in wheat, barley and rye. In genetically susceptible people, gluten can trigger an autoimmune reaction in the intestines, which causes a variety of gastrointestinal symptoms and prevents the proper absorption of food and nutrients, leading to serious health consequences. This study, the largest ever on the prevalence of celiac disease in the United States, took place over five years and included blood samples from 13,145 adults and children from 32 states.

What is IBS?
Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is a problem that affects mainly the bowel ,* which is also called the large intestine. The bowel is the part of the digestive system that makes and stores stool. The word syndrome means a group of symptoms. IBS is a syndrome because it can cause several symptoms. For example, IBS causes cramping, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and constipation. *Linked terms are defined in the glossary. IBS is not a disease. It's a functional disorder, which means that the bowel doesn't work as it should. With IBS, the nerves and muscles in the bowel are extra-sensitive. For example, the muscles may contract too much when you eat. These contractions can cause cramping and diarrhea during or shortly after a meal. Or the nerves can be overly sensitive to the stretching of the bowel (because of gas, for example). Cramping or pain can result.
IBS can be painful. But it does not damage the bowel or cause any other diseases.
