Digestive Disorders
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
What is irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)?
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is an intestinal disorder that causes:
  • crampy pain
  • gassiness
  • bloating
  • changes in bowel habits
IBS has inaccurately been called by many names:
  • colitis
  • mucous colitis
  • spastic colon
  • spastic bowel
  • functional bowel disease
IBS is called a functional disorder because there is no sign of disease when the colon is examined. Because physicians have been unable to find an organic cause, IBS often has been thought to be caused by emotional conflict or stress. While stress may worsen IBS symptoms, research suggests that other factors also are important. IBS often causes a great deal of discomfort and distress, but it is not believed to:
  • cause permanent harm to the intestines.

Lactose Intolerance
What is lactose intolerance?
Lactose intolerance is a condition caused by a lack of an enzyme called lactase, which, in turn, causes the body to be unable to digest lactose, a sugar found in milk products. Hidden Lactose in Foods According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disorders (NIDDK), lactose is often added to prepared foods, including the following:
  • bread and other baked goods processed breakfast cereals instant potatoes, soups, and breakfast drinks margarine lunch meats (other than kosher) salad dressings candies and other snacks mixes for pancakes, biscuits, and cookies
Some products labeled nondairy , such as powdered coffee creamer and whipped toppings, may also include ingredients that are derived from milk and therefore contain lactose. When reading food labels with care, look not only for milk and lactose among the contents, but also for such words as the following:

Fructose, a type of sugar found in everything from soft drinks to honey to apple juice, and it could be making you sick. Peter Beyer, R.D. Researcher University of Kansas Medical Center Kansas City, KS "There's a limit to the amount of fructose that we can consume." Researcher peter beyer says our fructose intake has nearly tripled in the last thirty years. He suggests we limit the amount of sugar in our diet to about twelve teaspoons a day. Peter Beyer, R.D. "That's the upper limit and right now, we're at 32." Fructose can cause gas, bloating and pain. More than 50% of healthy people have symptoms after consuming just 25 grams of fructose - the amount in just one soda. For people with gastrointestinal disorders, fructose can make their symptoms worse.

The Book of Food and Digestive Tract Disorders i s dedicated to the intelligent reader who wants to understand and manage his or her digestive tract disorder. The book covers a range of problems from milder, but unpleasant symptoms that recur over many years to serious, life-threatening diseases. The book is available in printed and eBook editions and interfaces with the Alpha Nutrition Program, a standard method of diet revision From the Introduction There are at least 100 million patients in the USA and Canada that have recurrent, long-term gastrointestinal symptoms. Abdominal pain, distension with excess gas, constipation and diarrhea are the four prominent symptoms. Most members of this large group will self-medicate, suffer long-term. Some will receive the diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome along with inappropriate advice and medication with limited efficacy.

Digestive Tract Children's Problems and Solutions Alpha Health Education From the Book of Children Children's Center Infant Feeding Digestive Problems ... Children's Rescue Starter Pack Parents need to know two basic principles of digestion management: 1. If you don't like what comes out - change what goes in. 2. Treat symptoms as information. When the gastrointestinal tract complains, adjust your child's food intake until the complaints disappear. The 3 most common infant digestive problems are
  • colic constipation diarrhea.
All three may occur together. All three are likely to be food-related. The "irritable" or reactive bowel syndrome begins in infancy with colic, bloating, regurgitation, vomiting and diarrhea. Colic in infancy is abdominal pain with the attendant emotional distress of the infant and his parents. Jenkins et al demonstrated that food allergy is a major cause of infantile colitis. Gastrointestinal symptoms are often associated with:
  • rhinorrhea (nose congestion, runny nose)

19. Dealing With Digestive Disorders

//This is the Top Banner OAS_AD('Top'); Dealing with Digestive Disorders The fact that bad food can cause an upset stomach is not exactly a news flash. But the way in which diet affects a chronic digestive problem is a bit more of a mystery. Scientists are still at work unraveling many of the connections. However, it's quite clear that the disorders discussed in this chapter are profoundly influenced by what you do or do not eat, or can be helped by adding or eliminating certain types of food. Changing your diet as a first step in therapy is usually a wise choice and is certainly more cost effective than waiting until the problem puts you in the hospital. In the United States alone, 10 million people each year are hospitalized with digestive disorders, and some $107 billion is spent on direct and indirect medical costs. Fortunately, drugs and surgery are available for severe conditions. And for some problems, seeing your doctor is the best course from the start. Most gastric ulcers for instance, can now be easily cured with antibiotics; so why condemn yourself to a bland diet instead? Touring the Digestive Tract The digestive tract is really just a long, winding tube. Rings of thick muscle, or sphincters, cordon off different sections of the tube: the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. Each section has its own role to play in digestion; and each can fall victim to its own set of ailments.

//This is the Top Banner OAS_AD('Top'); Digestive Disorders, Minor and Major If we are what we eat, then what we are is only as good as our digestion. When it goes awry, it generally affects our total well-being. Whether it's mild nausea, a nasty virus, or a chronic disorder such as irritable bowel syndrome, a disorder of the digestive tract is usually impossible to ignore. If the condition persists, it can undermine our total health, eventually threatening our very lives.
How the Digestive System Works
The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is a long hollow tube stretching from the head to the end of the body, including the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. The salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas are also important parts of this far-reaching system. The main purpose of the GI tract is to break down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into molecules small enough to be absorbed through cell membranes. In that way, it provides the cells with the necessary energy for life and health. Digestion begins in the mouth when food is chewed and starch is broken down by ptyalin, an enzyme secreted in saliva. Food then enters the stomach, where it is reduced to tiny particles and further transformed by gastric juices. The solid portion remains in the stomach for one to six hours until it liquefies completely; liquid passes into the duodenum (small intestine), where numerous enzymes produced by the pancreas, along with bile from the liver, break it down further for absorption. When it finally arrives in the large intestine, all nutritional value has been spent, and the only remaining process is the removal of water before final elimination.
