As a calcium channel blocker, it is able to both increase the myocardial oxygen supply and decrease the body's demand for oxygen. It does this by lowering the heart rate and expanding the volume of the circulatory system, which leads to a lower blood pressure. Experiments show that the drug Cardizem tm (diltiazem hydrochloride) has a half life of 20 hours inside the human body. In our model the rate of change of Cardizem tm in the body is assumed to be proportional to the amount present. Problem 1: Write a differential equation describing the rate of change of the quantity of Cardizem tm and determine the constant of proportionality. Problem 2: Old man Withers receives Cardizem tm intravenously at a continuous rate of 4 mg/min. Write a differential equation describing the rate of change of the quantity of Cardizem tm and compute its solution assuming that there is no Cardizem tm initially present in old man Withers.

IDEA I nternet D ifferential E quations A ctivities Thomas LoFaro and Kevin Cooper Department of Pure and Applied Mathematics Washington State University Abstract IDEA is a "virtual dynamic lab book" on the World Wide Web illustrating applications of differential equations in a wide variety of disciplines. Activities are being developed by us and contributions are being accepted from individuals at other institutions. IDEA provides users with internal and external tools to explore these activities mathematically. I. Project Overview The tremendous growth of the World Wide Web (WWW) in recent years has been prompted by individuals and groups wishing to share their message with a large audience at minimal cost. The increased use of the Internet has spawned equally astounding growth in the number of materials and tools available to Web site developers. From a mathematics education perspective, both of these factors provide us with new tools for the development of activities that demonstrate the utility and methods of mathematics to our students. The continually increasing number of WWW sites provides us with easy access to ideas and data from which we can develop material, and the development of new tools provides us with useful and exciting ways to disseminate our materials. In this paper we focus on the undergraduate differential equations curriculum and discuss one project that attempts to deliver these tools to instructors and students.
