A casual glance through the pages of any woman's magazine will reveal a myriad of diets. Low fat, high fat, low protein, high protein diets based on grapefruits, on eating no fruit, eating lots of fruit, on food combinations, or food avoidance. Most of these diets contradict one another, and some are dangerously low in protein, calories, vitamins, and/or minerals. If you have a few pounds or kilos to shed, how do you choose? Where do you begin? As a PhD qualified health educator, researcher, exercise physiologist, and writer with more than 20 years in health sciences, Tanya Zilberter is as qualified as anyone to guide would be slimmers. She runs three very popular diet focused web sites: dietandbody.com, DietAndBody.com, and BestLowCarbs.com, and Dr Zilberter's eBook Low Carbohydrate Dieting for Beginners , is, as one would expect, a well written, well researched guide to low carbohydrate diets. While I'm quite familiar with the FDA requirements, and was raised by a health conscious fanatic vegetarian, occasional macrobiotic, raw food, chew counting new age mother, I must say that the concept of a low carbohydrate diet was new to me. The basic premise for low carbohydrate diets is that the body will always burn carbohydrates first since it is the body's preferred fuel, and then burn fats second. Therefore a high carbohydrate diet will limit fat burning.

Lose a stone in 10 days, beat cellulite for good, banish bloating forever, get glowing skin! These are just some of the promises that detox diets make. It’s no wonder then, that after the excesses of the festive season, many of us are keen to throw out all thoughts of eating sensibly and instead follow a detox diet that promises to deliver instant weight loss and feelings of wellbeing. And with celebs like Countdown’s Carol Vorderman and pop star-turned-gardener Kim Wilde praising the process of detox dieting, who could resist?
Speaking of her new video – 10 Day Detox – Kim says ‘Since following this 10 Day Detox, I have lost weight and gained energy – it really does work and it has changed my lifestyle completely!’ Meanwhile, in her latest book – Detox Recipes (Virgin Books, £ 11.99) – Carol Vorderman, promises detox will do everything from helping you to lose weight, get rid of cellulite and feel more energetic to banishing colds, making you feel calmer and lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels. It’s compelling stuff, but many health experts question how healthy detox diets really are – and that alone should be enough to set the alarm bells ringing for most of us.

Weight loss is a major concern for the US population. Surveys consistently show that most adults are trying to lose or maintain weight (Serdula, 1999). Nevertheless, the prevalence of overweight and obesity has increased steadily over the past 30 years. Currently, 50% of all adult Americans are considered overweight or obese (Flegal, 1998; Mokdad, 1999). These numbers have serious public health implications. Excess weight is associated with increased mortality (Allison, 1999), and morbidity (Must, 1999). It is associated with cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, stroke, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea and respiratory problems, and some types of cancer (NHLBI, 1998; WHO, 1998).
Most people who are trying to lose weight are not using the recommended combination of reducing caloric intake and increasing physical activity (Serdula). Although over 70% of persons reported using each of the following strategies at least once in four years: increased exercise (82.2%), decreased fat intake (78.7%), reduced food amount (78.2%,) and reduced calories (73.2%), the duration of any one of these behaviors was brief. Even the most common behaviors were used only 20% of the time (French, 1999).
The proliferation of diet books is nothing short of phenomenal. A search of books on Amazon.com using the key words ?weight loss? revealed 1,214 matches. Of the top 50 best selling diet books, 58% were published in 1999 or 2000 and 88% were published since 1997. Many of the top 20 best sellers promote some form of carbohydrate restriction (e.g. Dr. Atkins? New Diet Revolution, The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet, Protein Power, Lauri's Low-Carb Cookbook) (Amazon.com, 8/26/00).

    What is a very low-calorie diet (VLCD)?
    VLCDs are commercially prepared formulas of about 800 calories that replace all usual food intake for several weeks or months. VLCDs are not the same as over-the-counter meal replacements, which are meant to substitute for one or two meals a day. VLCDs, when used under proper medical supervision, effectively produce significant short-term weight loss in patients who are moderately to extremely obese.

    VLCDs are intended to produce rapid weight loss at the start of a weight-loss program in patients with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30. BMI correlates significantly with total body fat content.     Avocados Offer Good Food Substitute for People with Type 2 Diabetes
    Joslin Diabetes Center recently released new nutrition guidelines for overweight and obese individuals with type 2 diabetes. The new guidelines recommend that 30 to 35 percent of calories in the daily diet come from fat, primarily mono- and polyunsaturated fats as found in California avocados. Diabetes affects over 18 million Americans, including an increasing number of young people. An estimated 41 million Americans have pre-diabetes and are at risk of developing full-blown type 2 diabetes unless they lose weight and increase physical activity. Diabetes is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and other serious complications. The guidelines recommend that people who are overweight or obese carefully choose their fat, protein and carbohydrate sources. Studies show that monounsaturated fats can improve the sensitivity of cells to insulin, which in turn, helps keep blood sugar at appropriate levels. Substituting monounsaturated fat for saturated fat also helps lower LDL cholesterol while maintaining HDL cholesterol, which reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in people with diabetes.
