    Diabetes: Startling Statistics
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that affects the lives of about 16 million people in the United States, 5.4 million of whom are unaware that they even have the disease. Every day, 2,200 new cases of diabetes are diagnosed, and an estimated 780,000 new cases are identified each year. The disease is marked by the inability to manufacture or properly use insulin, and impairs the body’s ability to convert sugars, starches, and other foods into energy. The long-term effects of elevated blood sugar (hyperglycemia) are damage to the eyes, heart, feet, kidneys, nerves, and blood vessels.
Symptoms of hyperglycemia may include frequent urination, excessive thirst, extreme hunger, unexplained weight loss, tingling or numbness of the feet or hands, blurred vision, fatigue, slow-to-heal wounds, and susceptibility to certain infections. People who have any of these symptoms and have not been tested for diabetes are putting themselves at considerable risk and should see a physician without delay.
Part of keeping your diabetes in control is testing your blood sugar often. Ask your doctor how often you should test, and what your blood sugar levels should be. Testing your blood and then treating high blood sugar early will help you to prevent complications.

134. Diabetes Portal
The leading diabetes resource online. diabetes Portal websites. Pancreas andislet transplants Conversation about diabetes Resarch to cure diabetes
http://www.diabetesportal.com/
Goodbye for now ...
It is with both joy and sadness that I have made the decision to close Diabetes Portal for now. Diabetes Portal and its dedicated team of volunteers and staff have helped thousands of people during the past ten years. Since its inception as the Insulin-Free World Foundation in 1995 and subsequent incorporation as DiabetesPortal.com, it has been a driving force in bridging communication between researchers, clinicians, and those of us living with diabetes. With more than 3.5 million hits and 350,000 impressions per month, the Diabetes Portal family of websites has offered information, peer-support, referrals and counsel to diabetic people of all ages around the world. This was all possible because of a pancreas transplant in 1993 that freed me from the complications and day-to-day issues of diabetes. I learned of pancreas transplantation by sheer chance. After my recovery I was determined that I would help others living with diabetes to get information about treatment options, to derive hope from advances in cure-focused treatments and research, and to advocate for more funding to cure diabetes. I have made many good friends through Diabetes Portal … from people who share my experiences with diabetes, to parents of children with diabetes, to transplant surgeons, and brilliant scientists devoted to curing this disease. I will continue to be dedicated to the cause of curing diabetes and to helping as I can, yet my husband and I have just completed the adoption of our second daughter and I have found such great happiness in motherhood that I am choosing to devote myself to my family for the next few years.

How Diabetes Works
by Craig Freudenrich, Ph.D.
Table of Contents Introduction to How Diabetes Works Insulin, Glucagon and Blood Glucose Diabetes Insulin Ineffectiveness Treatments Lots More Information Diabetes Mellitus The name "diabetes mellitus" means " sweet urine ." It stems from ancient times, when physicians would taste a patient's urine as a part of diagnosis. Odds are that you know someone with diabetes mellitus , possibly even someone who has to take insulin each day to manage the disease. Diabetes is a growing health problem in the United States and has risen about six-fold since 1950, now affecting approximately 16 million Americans. About one-third of those 16 million do not know that they have the disease. Diabetes-related health care costs total nearly $100 billion per year and are increasing. Diabetes contributes to over 200,000 deaths each year. Photo courtesy Insulin is what diabetics lack and need for treatment.
