To Your Health Control your diabetes through diet, exercise
Dr. Judy Goldberg-Berman
Diabetes, an abnormal level of blood sugar, is one of the more common diseases, affecting about 5 percent of the population. The disease has been in the news a lot lately, as physicians emphasize the fact that diabetes can be managed through diet, exercise and lifestyle choices. A key 1993 study showed that by getting good control of one's diabetes, the risk of developing complications can be reduced 60 percent. There are several common misperceptions about diabetes, and the medical field is trying to raise awareness about the facts and take blame off diabetes sufferers. Getting diabetes isn't purely one's fault; most patients have some genetic predisposition to the disease. There are two types of diabetes. Type I is the insulin-dependent form of the disease. It used to be called juvenile diabetes because it mostly strikes before age 40. Type I is considered an autoimmune disease, which means that the body's immune system starts attacking an organ, in this case, the pancreas. When the pancreas can no longer produce an adequate supply of insulin, daily injections must be given. Type I, affecting about 1 percent of the population, is the more serious form of the disease, and is partially inherited. Studies show that if a person has a sibling with diabetes, he or she has a 5 percent chance of getting the disease. If a person's father had diabetes, her or she has a 10 percent chance of getting it. If one's mother had the disease, the child's risk drops to 5 percent.

Help Someone You Know. Find out how. AMFH Program Description The Alberta Monitoring For Health Program enables Albertans with diabetes, who meet eligibility requirements, to access limited funding to cover a portion of the cost of eligible diabetes management supplies. This program is administered by the Canadian Diabetes Association and funded by Alberta Health and Wellness (under Population Health Strategies Branch). Thanks to a recent increase in funding from the Alberta government, the AMFH Program will now also provide support to persons with diabetes who are not insulin dependent, but manage their disease through diet and oral medication. Depending on how you manage your diabetes, you may be eligible for assistance.

Questions and Answers about YOUR diabetes:
Q: Are scientists close to finding a cure for diabetes?
A More recently there has been a lot of media coverage around the possibility for a "cure" for type1 diabetes (insulin-dependent). A Canadian study was performed with patients who had longstanding type 1 diabetes, where they received injections of isolated beta cells (insulin-producing cells obtained from recently deceased persons). These patients received special experimental medicines to prevent rejection of these "foreign cells," and after about a year were able to control their blood sugars without insulin injections. A larger study is now in progress. As it stands there are several challenges, such as preventing immune rejection; finding an adequate number of insulin cells; keeping cells alive; and others. Studies continue and progress is being made in all these areas. There are no promising long-term scientific studies for a cure of

New Web Discussion Group To Debunk Myths Around Diet and Diabetes
Despite new nutrition guidelines issued by the American Diabetes Association several years ago, many people with diabetes still believe that there is something called a "diabetic diet." Many people with diabetes who are receiving inadequate information about how to manage their condition imagine that this so-called "diabetic diet" means they have to "avoid sugar."
"That just simply isn't how meal planning works today with patients with diabetes," says Karen Chalmers, R.D., M.S., C.D.E., Director of Nutrition Services at Joslin in Boston and author of 16 Myths of a Diabetic Diet
"Simply stated, with proper education and within the context of healthy eating, a person with diabetes can eat anything a non-diabetic eats," says Chalmers.
In response to this gap in knowledge about what people believe about eating with diabetes, Joslin Diabetes Center has begun a campaign to educate people with diabetes - and the general public about what the nutrition issues are for people with diabetes.

Why does it matter what I eat?
What you eat is closely connected to the amount of sugar in your blood. The right food choices will help you control your blood sugar level. Return to top
Do I have to follow a special diet?
There isn't one "diabetes diet." Your doctor will probably suggest that you work with a registered dietitian to design a meal plan. A meal plan is a guide that tells you what kinds of food you can choose at meals and snack time and how much to have. For most people with diabetes (and those without, too), a healthy diet consists of 40% to 60% of calories from carbohydrates, 20% from protein and 30% or less from fat. Return to top
    Can I eat any sugar?
Yes. In recent years, doctors have learned that eating some sugar doesn't usually cause problems for most people with diabetesas long as it is part of a balanced diet. Just be careful about how much sugar you eat and try not to add sugar to foods. Return to top

Our information is currently being update. If you are looking for information regarding vegetarianism and diabeties, there is an article in the Winter 1999 issue of Vegetarian Dietetics, “Can Type 2 Diabetes Be Managed Effectively with a Vegetarian Diet,” which states, “Consumption of a low fat, plant-based diet, coupled with regular exercise, can possibly reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. A plant-based diet, rich in legumes and slowly digested grains, may improve glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity and facilitate the successful management of type 2 diabetes.” The Vegetarian Way , by Virginia Messina, MPH, RD and Mark Messina, PhD, has an excellent section on diabetes and a vegetarian diet.
