Poor Diet In Grandparents May Be The Cause Of Diabetes
In other news regarding breast feeding it has been suggested that children may be at increased risk of diabetes if their grandmothers had a poor diet while pregnant and breastfeeding. Lab studies on animals by scientists found insulin resistance which can lead to diabetes could span across two generations. The University of Texas study published by the Journal of Physiology, showed that the second generation of rats denied proper nutrition during pregnancy were at greater risk of obesity and insulin resistance. Earlier research has suggested that children may be at increased risk of diabetes if their mother's diet was poor during pregnancy and breastfeeding, now the US team, who collaborated with researchers from Mexico, believe their work is the first to show the effect may be passed down the next generation too. The research has also highlighted that granddaughters were particularly vulnerable if their grandmothers' diet was not up to scratch during pregnancy, the effects were less for grandsons.

Diabetes Prevention: The Test Diabetes is about to become a concern for millions of middle-aged Americans who never gave it much thought before. The American Diabetes Association, backed by federal health authorities, recently called for routine screening of all Americans starting at age 45, using a simple, inexpensive test, in order to detect more cases of Type 2 diabetes earlier. This form of diabetes, previously called non-insulin dependent or adult-onset diabetes, accounts for 90 to 95% of cases of diabetes. Until now, the disease has generally been diagnosed when people develop symptoms, such as unusual thirst or frequent urination, or when people at high risk for the disease (such as those with a family history of it) are tested for it. Now blood sugar testing may become as routine as blood pressure screening. Diabetes is a breakdown in the body's ability to utilize glucose (blood sugar) efficiently. Glucose, the main sugar into which foods are digested, can be used by our cells only in the presence of the hormone insulin. With Type 2 diabetes, the cells become resistant to the effects of insulin, and thus blood levels of glucose rise. (With Type 1, which is usually diagnosed in young people, the body virtually stops producing insulin.) The incidence of Type 2 diabetes is on the rise, largely because the U.S. population is aging and getting heavier.

SCHOOL Beating Diabetes with a veggie diet
    - from The Vegetarian June 1992
    by dietitian Jane Brophy
The old saying 'You are what you eat' has a special meaning for vegetarians in general, but even greater significance for one particular group...
F or diabetics the choice of food really can be a matter of life and death. Diabetes affects people of all ages and both sexes and can cause blindness, kidney failure and gangrene of the hands and feet if left untreated. Diet is one of the most important ways of controlling diabetes, and a vegetarian lifestyle with its emphasis on low fat, high carbohydrate and high fibre foods is particularly suitable. This common disease, which affects more than 30 million people worldwide leaves the body unable to process food properly. Usually, most of the food we eat is digested and converted to glucose, a sugar which is carried by the blood to all cells in the body and used for energy. The hormone insulin then helps glucose pass into cells. But diabetics are unable to control the amount of glucose in their blood because the mechanism which converts sugar to energy does not work properly. Insulin is either absent, present in insufficient quantities or ineffective. As a result glucose builds up in the bloodstream and leads to problems such as weakness, inability to concentrate, loss of co-ordination and blurred vision. If the balance of food and insulin isn't right diabetics can have a "hypo", which means their blood sugar levels are too low. If not corrected this can lead to coma and even death.

    Living with Diabetes
Diabetes is a very common disease, affecting more than 17 million people in the United States alone. Diabetes causes a disruption in the way the body uses glucose, the primary source of fuel for the body's cells. Without glucose, the cells cannot operate and eventually die. The goal of any diabetic is to control his or her blood sugar level. About Diabetes Type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, and impaired glucose tolerance. Each has specific causes, symptoms and methods of management. Diabetic Diet A diabetic diet provides a balance of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. This allows the body to maximize the energy obtained without overloading the body with glucose. Regulating Insulin Maintaining a normal blood glucose level reduces the risk of diabetic complications. An essential aspect of maintaining a normal blood sugar level is regulating insulin.

    What is Diabetes?
Diabetes mellitus is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin to regulate the amount of glucose or sugar in the blood.
There are three major types of diabetes:
    • Type 1 diabetes is known as insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) formerly called juvenile-onset diabetes. Usually starts in children, whereby pancreas doesn't produce insulin. Type 2 diabetes is known as noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) formerly known as adult-onset diabetes). T ype 2 diabetes stand at more than 90% of all diabetes cases. In this case, pancreas will produce some insulin. However, the body's tissues don't respond well to the insulin signal to metabolize glucose properly, a condition called insulin resistance. Gestational diabetes is high blood glucose that diagnose in a person who does not have diabetes during pregnancy.
    Diabetic Diet
A lot of people have the misconception that diabetic diet consist only diabetic foods. The diet for diabetics is simply a balanced healthy diet which is vital for diabetic treatment. The regulation of blood sugar in the non-diabetic is automatic, adjusting to whatever foods are eaten. However, for the diabetic, extra caution is needed to balance food intake with exercise, insulin injections and any other glucose altering activity. This help diabetic patient to maintain the desirable weight and control their blood glucose level. It also helps to prevent diabetic patient from heart and blood vessel related diseases. Research show that regardless of the makeup of the diet, eating just enough calories to maintain an ideal weight is the most effective dietary strategy to prevent the onset of diabetic.

In a report at the meeting, Boden et al. (abstract 321) studied 10 obese type 2 diabetic patients strictly following the "Atkins Diet," with 21 g carbohydrate, 164 g fat, and 151 g protein, daily, compared with their customary diet of 309 g carbohydrate, 154 g fat, and 137 g protein, showing that over 2 weeks the daily calorie count decreased from 3,111 to 2,181 with attendant weight decrease from 114.8 to 112.4 kg. Urinary and plasma ketones increased, while there was no change in total energy expenditure or body water. There was improved insulin sensitivity and glycemic control and reduced plasma cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Costacou et al. (abstract 187) estimated insulin sensitivity in 280 men and 268 women with type 1 diabetes, showing interesting evidence that insulin resistance was associated with lower dietary protein intake.

As a diabetic, it is imperative that you to pay close attention to your diet and, in the case of Type II diabetics, watch your weight. The number one concern in diet is to watch those sugar levels! Weight loss is also a big concern since overwieght conditions will typically aggravate the diabetic condition. Both of these areas will be discussed in detail but first we will address the subject of diabetic diet. It is most important for the diabetic to learn about nutrition. Managing diabetes is a daily discipline. By following a good diet, you can make things a lot easier and you will also enjoy the other more common benefits of healthy dieting.
For diabetics, the best type of diet is a low-fat diet with complex carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates are not the best thing for diabetics. These include things like sweets, candies, cakes, sweet drinks and jams all of which are rapidly absorbed and digested. They will cause a surge of sugar levels in the bloodstream which can cause serious problems. They should be avoided or at least taken in small quantities. Complex Carbohydrates are a much better source of energy for diabetics. These include whole wheat or wholegrain breads, whole wheat pasta, brown rice, beans, oats and most vegetables and fruits. These will be more slowly absorbed and digested and will therefore help to keep the patients sugar levels stable. Besides carbohydrates, however there are other considerations.

It is the third leading cause of death and is responsible for approximately five percent of all hospital admissions. Despite an enormous amount of research, the incidence of diabetes is increasing by about six percent per year and there is still no clear understanding as to its cause, nor is there a cure. Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease caused by bodily malfunctions in utilizing glucose. Glucose, or blood sugar, is the fuel the body needs for energy. Insulin, which is secreted by the pancreas, helps make cell walls permeable. This promotes the entry of glucose molecules into the cells where it can be used for energy.
