    Latest News Diabetes and Diet
You've recently been diagnosed with diabetes and enough of what the doctor said has sunk in that you realize you need to closely evaluate your diet. Although there was probably a lot of "don't eat this" and "be sure to watch out for that," hopefully there was also some encouragement, because a diagnosis of diabetes is not a sentence to a future of tasteless, bland cuisine.
In addition to managing your diet it is important to keep a close watch on your glucose levels. Find the right tools and products that make managing diabetes easier.
    How Does Diabetes Affect Diet?
Normally, the body produces a hormone called insulin. With diabetes, the ability to make or utilize insulin is impaired. Without insulin, the body can't properly use glucose, the simple sugar the body produces from the food we eat. Insulin is the key that unlocks cells and lets the glucose enter, thus providing energy for critical cell metabolism.
The regulation of blood sugar in the non-diabetic is automatic, adjusting to whatever foods are eaten. For the diabetic, however, extra care must be taken to balance food intake (and the resultant impact on blood sugar levels) with insulin injections, exercise and any other glucose altering activity.

Your diagnosis of diabetes may have been a surprise, and you may have more questions than answers at this point. You're not alone! Millions of Americans have diabetes and much research has been done on the subject. Answers exist for many of your questions, and those who've been there are often willing to share diabetes tips and what works for them. Here are some frequently asked questions related to diabetes and diet.
Will I always have to watch what I eat?
The degree to which you will have to watch your diet varies from person to person and depends somewhat on whether you have Type 1 diabetes or Type 2 diabetes. The diet for someone with Type 2 diabetes may focus on weight loss to reduce insulin resistance. As weight is lost, blood glucose control may improve as a result of being able to more efficiently utilize insulin, thereby reducing the need for extreme dietary restrictions. People with Type 1 diabetes are finding the expanded options for insulin delivery (insulin pen, insulin pump) very helpful in removing diabetes-related roadblocks to their diets.
    Can I splurge occasionally?

Diabetes Diet By changing your diet, you can help control your blood glucose levels. The best plan is to reduce the amount of simple sugars and refined carbohydrates you consume while increasing the amount of complex carbohydrates and fiber in your diet. Complex carbohydrates such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are broken down slowly by the body, leading to a slower release of glucose into the blood stream. Simple carbohydrates, such as sugars and highly processed or refined foods, are broken down quickly, leading to a rapid rise in blood sugar. People with diabetes should also eat less saturated fat.
    Daily Diabetes Diet Recommendations:
Nutrient Recommendation Carbohydrates 55% to 60% of total daily calories (mostly complex carbohydrates) Protein about 10% to 20% of total daily calories Fat less than 30% of total daily calories (less than 10% from saturated fats) Fiber 20 to 35 grams per day
Get the latest medical research on diabetes cardiovascular disease , and age-related disease every month.

How Food Affects Your Blood Glucose
Whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, what, when, and how much you eat all affect your blood glucose. Blood glucose is the main sugar found in the blood and the body's main source of energy. If you have diabetes (or impaired glucose tolerance), your blood glucose can go too high if you eat too much. If your blood glucose goes too high, you can get sick. Your blood glucose can also go too high or drop too low if you don't take the right amount of diabetes medicine. If your blood glucose stays high too much of the time, you can get heart, eye, foot, kidney, and other problems. You can also have problems if your blood glucose gets too low (hypoglycemia). Keeping your blood glucose at a healthy level will prevent or slow down diabetes problems. Ask your doctor or diabetes teacher what a healthy blood glucose level is for you.
