169. Healthy Black Skin. Medical Information
Medical information on skin disorder found in skin of color. Find pictures, treatment, skin care tips, and links to dermatology sites.
http://www.healthyblackskin.com
Welcome to Healthy B lack S kin .com a place to find medical information on: Skin of color has special properties that create younger appearing, warm and glowing complexions. Black skin is very similar to white skin, but there are some structural differences. Black skin has considerably fewer elastic fibers and is smoother and firmer than white skin. Variations in skin colors are due to differences in the amount and distribution of pigment in the epidermis. The pigment melanin is contained inside small storage cells called melanosomes. In lighter skin, the melanosomes are small and aggregate together, while black skin melanocytes have larger melanosomes, that are mostly distributed individually. Because of their dark skin color, African-Americans are better protected against skin cancer and premature wrinkling from sun exposure, and have a natural sun protection factor SPF of around 15%. Dermatologist still recommend that everyone wears sunscreen. click here to read more information on skin damage prevention @ www.sunbrellas.org
Most skin diseases occur in all types of skin, regardless of the pigment of the skin. However, the special skin in people of color is more reactive, easily damaged and is prone to problems of discolorations and scars. In people of color, there are a few conditions that appear abnormal, but are actually variations of healthy skin, there is a decreased frequency of certain skin disorder (skin cancers), and certain problems occur more frequently (Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra).

172. Pretibial Myxedema
of a dermatology complication sometimes found in nonthyrotoxic Graves disease, autoimmune thyroiditis, and stasis dermatitis.......
http://www.thedoctorsdoctor.com/diseases/pretibial_myxedema.htm
Background This is an uncommon complication of Grave's disease, occurring in 1-4% of patients. There is a diffuse, non-pitting edema and thickening of the skin usually on the anterior aspect of the lower legs spreading to the dorsum of the feet. Advanced cases may involve the upper trunk, upper extremities, face, neck, and ears. The lesions resolve very slowly. It occasionally occurs in non-thyrotoxic Grave's disease, autoimmune thyroiditis, and stasis dermatitis. The serum contains circulating factors which stimulate fibroblasts to increase synthesis of glycosaminoglycans. Biopsy of the skin reveals mucin in the mid to lower dermis. There is no increase in fibroblasts. With time, there may be secondary hyperkeratosis which may become verruciform. Many of these patients may also have co-existing stasis dermatitis. Elastic stains will reveal a reduction in elastic tissue.
PATHOGENESIS CHARACTERIZATION TSH and TSH receptor antibody-binding sites in fibroblasts of pretibial myxedema are related to the extracellular domain of entire TSH receptor. Chang TC, Wu SL, Hsiao YL, Kuo ST, Chien LF, Kuo YF, Change CC, Chang TJ.

Dermatology at Harvard Medical School

Skin diseases rarely end life, but they often ruin it. Most skin diseases, including common disorders such as eczema, psoriasis and acne, can now be successfully treated. Dermatologists are often underutilized because the medical and lay communities are unaware of the diagnostic and therapeutic power of modern dermatology.
Normal and abnormal skin provides an excellent opportunity for teaching students of medicine at all levels of training and experience. If dermatology is taught with skill and enthusiasm, it teaches more than cutaneous biology and pathophysiology. Dermatology can be exciting and useful introduction to diagnostic pattern recognition and a window to many systemic diseases.
Skin has a highly vasoactive blood supply, is an immune organ and is easily available for non-invasive optical diagnostic and for biochemical and microscopic studies. The skin is an extremely useful model system and substrate for diverse research programs.
