Sample Dropout Intervention Program
SCHOOL TRANSITIONAL ENVIRONMENT PROJECT (STEP)
Background: The School Transitional Environment Project (STEP) is designed to enhance the experience of students during school transitions by restructuring the school environment. STEP was created in 1989 by researchers at the University of Illinois and was funded in part by a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. Intervention Description: Students in this program are assigned to student cohort groups, each of which has a homeroom teacher. These cohorts remain together for homeroom as well as core classes (e.g., mathematics, English). Cohort classrooms are purposely grouped together in the larger school in an effort to create a feeling of community and to decrease the likelihood that participating students will engage in conflicts with older students. Homeroom teachers take on the roles of teacher, counselor, and administrator in their relations with the students. These teachers keep track of attendance and follow up with parents about any absences. They also talk with students in their homerooms about class schedules and any personal problems the students may be having.

Arts program provides services, guidance to HIV/AIDS patients
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. As an art educator and researcher, Julia Kellman has long been aware from her academic's box-seat vantage point that art can impact people's lives in profound ways. But for the past four years, she's witnessed the phenomenal power of art-making from the perspective of a director who is on stage, engaging in an ongoing, intimate dialogue with the actors. Only in Kellman's case, the actors are real people people who've been hit head-on by the brutal reality of HIV/AIDS diagnoses, then left to work through the many and varied response stages that inevitably follow, from despair and depression to acceptance and healing. Kellman, who has joint appointments in the School of Art and Design and College of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, began working first-hand with HIV/AIDS patients at a community hospital as part of a small pilot program launched in 2000. In its first year, the Carle Hospital Arts Program sponsored by the U. of I. medical school's psychiatry department and funded by the Carle Foundation provided individual art instruction for just three people. Kellman taught the class, which met once a week for four hours over a 3 1/2-month period in a medical school computer lab that served as a makeshift art room. Art supplies and projects were stored in a nearby office.

Is Your Teen Depressed? Adrian H. Cline, Superintendent July 22, 2003 Rapid body changes, hormonal fluctuations, peer pressure, failed relationships, and a variety of other adolescent issues are enough to make any teen moody. For these reasons, teenage depression often goes undetected. Knowing the signs and symptoms of teenage depression can help you determine whether your teen is clinically depressed. Untreated depression can lead to difficulties that can continue into adulthood. Identifying depression is the first step in getting help. Signs and Symptoms Change in sleeping patterns, including excessive sleep, inability to fall asleep, night waking, and early rising. Change in eating patterns: weight loss, weight gain, eating disorders. Lack of interest in activities that once brought pleasure. Explosive anger, as well as anger that is disproportionate to the circumstances. Irritability and inability to find satisfaction. Sadness, or a general feeling of unhappiness, not tied to any specific event. Decline in grades and loss of concentration and motivation.

    Conclusions
    1. Gifted and talented students actively engaged in challenging programmatic options appear to be reasonably well-adjusted in terms of self-concept and social competence. The influence of a program upon this adjustment is not clear, nor can one ensure that program identification procedures contribute to adjustment. (Are only those who “behave” nominated for such programs?) 2. There are qualitative differences in motivational levels and in social and emotional issues related to school performance among the culturally diverse and economically disadvantaged populations of gifted students. The striving for racial identity may help to explain these differences among the culturally diverse, and the lack of access to choice of programs and materials may explain differences among the economically disadvantaged. 3. Early childhood learning experiences and respectful/authoritative parenting strategies contribute greatly to healthy personality development among gifted individuals.

    History
In the United States , "the school counseling profession began as a vocational guidance movement at the beginning of the 20th century (Schmidt, 2003, p. 6). Jesse B. Davis is considered the first to provide a systematic guidance program. In , he became the principle of a high school and encouraged the school English teachers to use compositions and lessons to relate career interests , develop character, and avoid behavioral problems. Many others during this time did the same. For example, in Frank Parsons (Father of Guidance) established the Bureau of Vocational Guidance to assist young people in making the transition from school to work. From the to the 's, school counseling and guidance grew because of the rise of progressive education in schools. This movement emphasized personal, social, moral development. Many schools reacted to this movement as anti-educational, saying that schools should only teach the fundamentals of education. This combined with the economic hardship of the Great Depression led to a decline in school counseling and guidance. In the 's, the U.S. used

    Teen Depression
    Dr. Carol Glod
Is alcohol and drug abuse a symptom of underlying depression?
Undiagnosed and untreated depression often leads to alcohol and substance abuse and dependence. On average, in teens that develop drug and alcohol problems, the depression precedes the drug and alcohol problems by about five years. Teens may turn to drugs and alcohol in an attempt to self-medicate. They may feel so bad that they want to get high or get drunk to feel numb. So, it is critical to intervene early. Also, at least 70% of teenagers who have depression will have a recurrence within five years, or at some point in adulthood. Teen depression predicts depression in adulthood. So even if somebody goes through a period of depression, and they get better, it is likely to recur. How does a parent determine the difference between typical teen rebellious behavior and depression?
Parents typically think that adolescence is a stormy time, with hormonal shifts, so a lot of what gets attributed to normal adolescence can be depression. If you suspect that a teen might have a problem with depression, you need to get a professional evaluation. A teenager may look fine on the outside, but have a lot going on inside. It can be hard for parents to tell. Keep in mind that depression isn't one symptom, it is a group of symptoms, you need to see at least a few signs of depression. Again, if a teen talks of death or suicide, the person needs immediate professional help.
