People of Denmark The people of Denmark are considered to be close relatives of the people of Norway and Sweden. It is a highly urbanized nation, with over 85 per cent of the population inhabiting the urban areas. The main religion is Lutheranism, which is followed by over 90 percent of the people. Most of the people speak Danish, which is the official language but English, the secondary language is also widely spoken. Arts, Culture and Music of Denmark Denmark has a rich cultural heritage and has gained recognition across the world, be it in terms of literature, painting, music or artwork. Literature plays an important role in Danish culture and has produced many renowned writers. As far as music is concerned, the capital Copenhagen houses the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Royal Orchestra, and the Royal Danish Ballet and a known name in this field is that of composer Carl August Nielsen, who was the conductor of the Royal Society and the Music Society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Denmark is heavily into theaters and plays, which is often presented in The Royal Theater in Copenhagen. Besides this, the country is also famous for beautifully designed ceramics, silverware, porcelain, and home furnishings. Copenhagen has a permanent exhibition of arts and crafts where artisans from all over the country may display and sell their work.

ADVERTISING INFORMATION Aarhus - History Aarhus is beautifully situated in typical East Jutland countryside, in a green valley with beaches and woods within easy reach. Rarely have people shown such a sense of appreciation of Danish landscape as the vikings who chose Aarhus for their first settlement. In around 948 A.D. a bishopric was established in Aarhus, the see becoming permanent in 1060. The fact that this town became the third bishopric in Jutland tells us something about its status as a trading centre. During the Viking Age, low pit houses lay huddled on the spit between the river and the bay. The whole area was surrounded by a stockade and defensive ditch, and the dock was right up at what is now Immervad. The quays were gradually extended outward towards the bay. Houses were erected outside the walls with new streets and roads. Growth and development really got going about the middle of the 19th century. Extension work on the harbour commenced in 1847, and was completed in 1861. That was a very fortunate juncture, because the railway to the North was opened the following year. Aarhus thus became a vital rail and maritime trading centre, the harbour evolving into the second biggest in the country, as well as the biggest employer in Aarhus. click to go back

    Danish History
Vestervig Church in Vestervig,Thy, Denmark, photo by Elroy Christenson, 1985 The Danes that occupied this western most peninsula of Denmark are constantly being harassed by the relentless weather of the North Sea. It may have helped to produce a people of extreme hardiness and independence. The short growing season also may have made it necessary to be particularly frugal and protective of their families and their animals. The Catholic church first came to the area in the 12th century. Up to this point the people here were probably Norse pagans and held animistic beliefs based on the forces of nature. Some early burial mounds are also nearby. The Vestervig Church, was the largest village church of the North during the Middle Ages at more than a hundred kilometers north of Copenhagen. It sits in the center of some of Denmark's most fertile farming land on a hill with a commanding view of the sea, fiord, lake, burial mounds, and sand dunes. At one time it had a quadrangle attached for a convent of the order of Augustus. The shaped has changed somewhat with removal of 2 naves and the building of the bell tower in the fifteenth century. After the Reformation the convent was torn down and the land went first to the crown then to the independently operated parish church. The cemetary along side the church has tombs that date from 1217. To quote from the Vestervig Kirke brochure:
"A stone inscribed near the entrance is 'Liden Kirstens' tomb, the illigible inscription reads: ' Here rest a sister and a brother; a couple so closely attached that this exalted pair have been laid to rest in the same grave'. This alludes in a few words to a long tragic love story of two who loved each other but were not allowed to married but who were united in death. The concerned are the sister of King Valdemar the Great and her lover prince Buris Henriksen. The king refused to give his consent to the marriage. In fit of rage when Liden Kirsten gave birth to a child the king had her killed and the princes eyes gouged out and "maimed hand and foot" he was chained to the convent porch, from where he each day tell his dying day dragged himself to his loved ones grave, legend has it, for eleven years."

Vitus Bering , 1681-1741, Danish seafarer. In 1704 Bering went into Russian service and became a second lieutenant in the newly formed Russian navy, where he distinguished himself during the Great Nordic War and was promoted to commander. In 1724 Bering was selected to lead an expedition which was to travel through Siberia to the Pacific to investigate if there was a North East Passage or if Siberia was connected with the North American continent. It took this large-scale First Kamchatka Expedition (1725-1730) two years to reach Okhotsk. There a ship was built which carried the expedition across to the Kamchatka peninsula where the actual expedition ship was built. In the summer of 1728 Bering sailed so far north without seeing Alaska that he believed he had established that Asia and America were not connected and that the North East Passage therefore existed.

    History
The Danes haven't been a threat to anyone for hundreds of years The word ‘Denmark’ appears as early as the Viking age, carved on the great Jelling Stone from the 900s, but there’s a huge difference between what ‘Denmark’ comprised then and what it comprises today. In some eras, for instance the 13th and 17th centuries, Denmark was a superpower whose influence was as massive as that of the largest European countries.
    Modern Denmark
Very bluntly speaking, it can be claimed that the present configuration of Denmark is the result of 400 years of forced relinquishments of land, surrenders and lost battles. Crucial events took place in the mid-1800s. In 1848, absolutism had been abolished, whereby Denmark got a constitution and a parliament, but in 1864 Denmark suffered a crushing defeat to Prussia in the second Schleswig war and had to relinquish 40% of its land. The Danish population dropped from 2.6 million to 1.6 million.
    Homogenous society
As a consequence of the defeat, Denmark became an almost completely ethnically homogenous society, in which the inhabitants – except the ones in Iceland (totally independent in 1944), the Faroe Islands and Greenland – shared language and culture.
