Denmark
Denmark is the smallest of the Scandinavian nations other than Iceland. Located between the North Sea on the west and the Baltic Sea on the southeast, Denmark is separated from Norway by the Skagerrak and from Sweden by the Kattegat and the Oresund. In the south, it shares a 68 km (43 mi) border with Germany. The Faeroe Islands and Greenland have been part of Denmark since the 14th century and are now self-governing units within the nation. During the 9th century the name Denmark (Danmark: "border district of the Danes") was used for the first time. Subsequently, Denmark ruled over much of Scandinavia, which developed a common Nordic culture. At the same time, because of Denmark's proximity to Germany, Denmark has also been influenced by German culture. Today, Denmark's balanced

  • Original Flag, based on an illustration
    Introduction
Among the independent nations recognised by the UN, the Danish flag is generally considered as the oldest continuously used national flag in the world. Regions, counts, kings and the like have had flags or banners older than Dannebrog, but no sovereign nation has used the same flag as long as Denmark.
Dennis Nielsen, 18 April 2001 Legend relates that the Dannebrog fell from the skies on 15 June 1219 , the day in which King Waldemar II defeated the Estonians in battle. The cross represents, unsurprisingly, Christianity. Legend aside, there is a small controversy around the idea that the design was linked somehow to an ensign of the Holy Roman Empire. A white cross on a red background was used by the Empire in many of its provinces. A problem with this hypothesis exists in the fact that Denmark was never a province of the Holy Roman Empire. This question remains unresolved. The Danish flag has changed its proportions over the years. The 'splitflag' was first specified in 1696 and changed in 1856, while the square-ended flag was first specified in 1748, and changed in 1893. But none of these changes really altered its essential character.

The Danes a homogenous Gothic-Germanic people have inhabited Denmark since prehistoric times. Danish is the principal language. A small German-speaking minority lives in southern Jutland; a mostly Inuit population inhabits Greenland; and the Faroe Islands have a Nordic population with its own language. Education is compulsory from ages seven to 16 and is free through the university level. The Evangelical Lutheran Church is state supported and accounts for about 97% of Denmark's religious affiliation. Denmark has religious freedom however and several other Protestant denominations and other religions exist. During the Viking period (9th-11th centuries) Denmark was a great power based on the Jutland Peninsula the Island of Zealand and the southern part of what is now Sweden. In the early 11th century King Canute united Denmark and England for almost 30 years. Viking raids brought Denmark into contact with Christianity and in the 12th century crown and church influence increased. By the late 13th century royal power had waned and the nobility forced the king to grant a charter considered Denmark's first constitution. Although the struggle between crown and nobility continued into the 14th century Queen Margrethe I succeeded in uniting Denmark Norway Sweden Finland the Faroe Islands Iceland and Greenland under the Danish crown. Sweden and Finland left the union in 1520; however Norway remained until 1814. Iceland in a "personal union" under the king of Denmark after 1918 became independent in 1944.

Denmark Time and Date Denmark History Back to Top The Danes, a homogenous Gothic-Germanic people, have colonised Denmark since past history times. Danish is the principal language. English is a required school subject, and fluency is high. A small German-speaking minority lives in southern Jutland; a mostly Inuit population inhabits Greenland. Education is compulsory from ages seven to 16 and is free through the university level. Although religious freedom is guaranteed, the state-supported Evangelical Lutheran Church accounts for about 85% of those persons claiming religious affiliation. Several other Christian denominations, as well as other major religions, find adherents in Denmark. Islam is now the second-largest religion in Denmark. During the Viking time (9th-11th centuries), Denmark was a great power based on the Jutland Peninsula, the Island of Zealand, and the southern part of what is now Sweden. Viking raids brought Denmark into contact with Christianity, and in the 12th century, crown and church determine increased. Sweden and Finland left the union in 1520; Norway remained until 1814. Iceland, in a "personal union" under the king of Denmark after 1918, became independent in 1944. The Reformation was introduced in Denmark in 1536. Denmark's provinces in today's southwestern Sweden were lost in 1658, and Norway was transferred from the Danish to the Swedish crown in 1814, following the defeat of Napoleon, with whom Denmark was allied.

The Little Mermaid, Hans Christian Andersen, Tivoli, thatched-roofed cottages with storks nesting on the chimneys, "Wonderful, Wonderful Copenhagen." These are some of the stereotyped images associated with Denmark, images frequently encouraged by official Danish tourist propaganda, but which have little to do with a modern, complicated, largely urban society. There are also other images of Denmark, including the unique and heroic efforts made during the Second World War by the Danish population to preserve the lives of their Jewish compatriots and save them from the Nazi holocaust by smuggling them to safety in neutral Sweden in the autumn of 1943. A brief look at the history of Jews in Denmark and the role of Jews in Danish society today is appropriate. I write as an American Jew who has resided in Denmark for the past eighteen years and who teaches Danish, English, and German in a Danish secondary school, a Gymnasium, in the center of Copenhagen. Much of the inspiration for this article I gained while teaching, for I was surprised by the limited knowledge Danish students possess about Jews in Denmark. All know about how the Danish Jews were rescued during the war, but that was about the limit of their knowledge despite the fact that quite a number of Danish Jews are highly visible in the Danish media. The explanation for this apparent paradox is that the Jewish people who are visible in the media are not usually thought of as being Jewish; they are simply viewed as newscasters, entertainers, politicians, and intellectuals.

Living in Denmark today, one sees few, if any, signs of overt anti-Jewish thought or behavior. There are still some traces of anti-Semitism in the language; the noun jode - Jew - is still occasionally used as a synonym for usurer, the question "Has a Jew spat on your big toe?" is asked if one has holes in one's socks and there are other similar phrases. These slurs are offensive, but Danes claim that they are merely empty phrases and it appears that younger people generally do not use these disparaging remarks, though some of my informants do tell me that among 11-year-old boys these terms are not uncommon and are used viciously. There are few, meaningful limitations imposed by belonging to the Jewish faith in what is ostensibly a Christian society with a state church. About the only organizations where one has to be a professed Christian in order to be a member are the highest orders of Danish knighthood and membership in the Danish Freemasons.
