Danish Symbols
  • The Danish National Anthem
Denmark is in the peculiar situation that it actually has two officially recognized national anthems.
  • The Danish Flag
According to the legend, Dannebrog fell down from the sky on June 15, 1219 to the Danish King Valdemar II during his crusade to Estonia. With the flag in hand, the King won the battle at Lyndanisse near Reval (Tallin). The flag was given to him as a divine approval. This is the explanation Danes like to give in order to tell the origin of the Danish national flag.
  • Words of the Danish National Anthem I know a Lovely Land I know a lovely land With spreading, shady beeches Near Baltic's salty strand; Its hills and valleys gently fall, Its ancient name is Denmark, And it is Freya's hall
  • Danish National Coats of Arms The Kingdom of Denmark has two national coats of arms: a small one known as the national coat of arms and a big coat of arms also called the royal coat of arms.
  • The Flag of Denmark The Danish flag is called "Dannebrog", [which is] old Danish for "The Danish Cloth".

    Danish Status
Danish is the official language of Denmark where it is spoken by 5 million people. It is also one of the two official languages of Greenland with about 8,000 speakers (the other is Greenlandic), and one of the two official languages of the Faeroes (the other is Faeroese). In addition, there are about 50,000 Danish speakers in the portion of Germany bordering on Denmark, where it is officially recognized and protected as a minority language. Denmark's geography punctuated by many islands and peninsulas has encouraged the development of countless dialects many of which are mutually incomprehensible. 'Rigsdansk' is the official (standard) variety of Danish language spoken in the big cities, taught in schools and used in the media. Oresund region
Since the opening of the Oresund Bridge Danish-Swedish cooperation has been further strengthened
Seen from the perspective of the Baltic Sea region as well as of Europe, the opening of one of the longest bridges in the world, the Oresund Bridge between Denmark and Sweden, on July 1st 2000 was an important landmark.
    Baltic Sea region
Denmark has a central location in the Baltic Sea region
This geographic location means that many multinational corporations use Denmark as a door to the European, Scandinavian and Baltic markets. No other country in Europe offers foreign investors better access to these markets.
    Infrastructure
The transport system in Denmark is among the most developed in the world:
    • The roads are many and of high standards and have a large capacity in terms of traffic load as well as good connections to Germany and Sweden
    • The railway system reaches almost all towns and has a considerable unused capacity
    • The aviation system is among the most developed in the world and is connected to most big international airports
According to The World Competitiveness Yearbook of The Global Competitiveness Report 1999 Denmark has the best distribution system in Europe:

Public Relations Organisation International, Inc. BACKGROUND
Denmark is a small country with a sound industrial economy. It has managed to avoid the recessions experienced elsewhere in Europe, mainly by achieving high levels of industrial exports. In recent years, growth has been approximately 2.5% a year. Since 1990 Denmark has maintained a substantial balance of payments. Politically stable, unemployment declined drastically between 1993-1998. The government's priorities are to maintain an advanced health and social security system, through the reform of economic, taxation and labour market policies, education and training. The national government is comprised of departments, authorities and state-owned corporations in such as areas as defence, railways, ferry lines and roads. Denmark is a very stable and safe country to live in. Over the past years there have been some industrial strikes - lasting only a short time. Denmark has excellent and close relations with other Nordic countries, Germany and Great Britain.
