Democrats pursue unity even as party divisions deepen
By Donald Lambro
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
August 8, 2005
These developments within the past two weeks have Democrats re-examining their future political strategies:
With union membership in the midst of a sharp downturn, "these survey results seem to indicate that, under present circumstances, no amount of organizing effort would be able to turn around the decline," said David Denholm, president of the Public Service Research Foundation, which funded the poll.
"Nearly 90 [regional organizers] have been recruited so far, and more come on every day," the DNC said in a memo to its members.

BUSH PRESIDENCY HAS DEEPENED RIFTS BETWEEN POLITICAL PARTIES, AUTHOR SAYS
Bert Rockman While Bush came into office saying he wanted to work toward national cohesion and political civility, he has done nothing to impede the growth of party polarization, said Bert Rockman , a professor of public policy and management at Ohio State University and former president of the Organized Section on Presidency Research. Rockman is co-editor, with Colin Campbell of the University of British Columbia, of the new book The George W. Bush Presidency: Appraisals and Prospects One of the most important elements of this context has been the sharp polarization between the Democratic and Republican parties, according to Rockman. The parties have attacked each other relentlessly, in part because the balance of power between the two parties has been so close and, in part, because they have so little in common.
However, Rockman said, Bush almost immediately went to work on a strongly conservative agenda that encouraged further divisions. He said Bush pushed hard on his monumental tax cut proposal, fostered an anti-labor tilt to his administration, fought to open up wilderness lands for energy exploration, and took an aggressive unilateralism in international affairs.

Spend a little time exposing the various misdeeds of the Bush administration and you will find the Democratic side of the aisle jumping up and down and waving their arms like school children screaming for attention and crying “let us in and we’ll fix all the problems of this country.” Such claims, of course, are bullshit because Democrats, like Republicans, devote all their time and energy to serving their own political agendas, not the country they have sworn to serve. Anyone who thinks yanking Republicans out of the White House and Congress and replacing them with Democrats will fix this country’s woes is a fool and a fool and his country are soon parted. The problem is not the perceived, and inaccurate, superiority of one political party or philosophy over another. It is, instead, the system that all political parties share and support. The problem is politics: left, right, conservative, liberal, Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Whig, Progressive or Socialist. Any partisan who puts consideration of party politics above the best interests of the country is selling out America. No party represents the best interests of America because all parties represent the special interests that dole out the big political action committee bucks.

Roberts: Reid says no, but he'll be confirmed anyway
A lot of people oppose the confirmation of John G. Roberts the Alliance for Justice, the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, the AFL-CIO and the Service Employees International Union, the House members in the Congressional Black Caucus and People for the American Way but they don't get to vote. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid does, and he said today that he's voting no. "I have reluctantly concluded that this nominee has not satisfied the high burden that would justify my voting for his confirmation based on the current record," he said today on the Senate floor. That's the good news for progressives hoping that the Democrats will make a firm stand against Roberts' confirmation. The bad news? Reid said that he would not support any "extraordinary procedural tactics" read, "filibuster" "to block the nomination." The rest of the bad news: Such efforts are almost certainly doomed to failure, anyway. As the Associated Press reports, two other Democrats, Ben Nelson of Nebraska and Max Baucus of Montana, suggested today that they're inclined to back Roberts. Add Reid and the 55 Senate Republicans, and you've got 58 of the 60 votes the GOP would need to overcome a Democratic filibuster. As soon as two more Democrats fall in line behind the president's nominee well, hello
