Hillary called for a " cease fire " within the party: "Now, I know the DLC has taken some shots from some within our party and that it has returned fire too," she told a gathering of the group here. "Well, I think it's high time for a cease-fire, time for all Democrats to work together based on the fundamental values we all share." The poor, poor DLC forced to "return fire"? Please. The DLC has always been at the forefront of intra-party mud-slinging. They're just finally being called on it, and suddenly it's time for peace? If she wanted to give a speech to a centrist organization truly interested in bringing the various factions of the party together, she could've worked with NDN. Instead, she plans on working with the DLC to come up with some common party message yadda yadda yadda. Well, that effort is dead on arrival. The DLC is not a credible vehicle for such an effort. Period. This is the organization that defines "cease fire" by going on the attack and smearing progressives in an entire American city of over 100,000 people:

SUSA 50-state governor rankings
by kos
Tue Sep 20th, 2005 at 13:31:18 PDT
Survey USA's really cool 50-state polling series is back, with a new set of governor's numbers Barbour went from a Minus 7 Net Job Approval in August to a Plus 19 Net Job Approval today, a 26-point increase. Net Job Approval is calculated by taking the number of state residents who Approve of a Governor's performance and subtracting the number who Disapprove. 4 other Governors affected by hurricanes also surged:
  • Alabama's Bob Riley (R) went from Net Zero in August to Plus 21 today, a 21-point increase.
  • North Carolina's Mike Easley (D) went from Plus 15 in August to Plus 34 today, an 19-point increase. (NC was hit by Ophelia in the days immediately prior to these interviews.)
  • Georgia' Sonny Perdue (R) went from Plus 9 in August to + 27 today, a 18-point increase.
  • Texas' Rick Perry (R) went from Minus 13 in August to Plus 4 today, a 17-point increase.
Of the Governors hit by hurricanes, only Louisiana's Kathleen Blanco (D) showed a sharp decline, from Plus 7 in August to Minus 15 today, a 22-point drop. Six of the top 10 governors are Republicans, while six of the worst 10 governors are Republicans.

POLITICAL PARTIES SHOULD BE SUBJECT TO ADVERTISING STANDARDS - HUGHES 21 January 2005 "Reporting news as it happens or after it happens, rather than before it happens, would also be a welcome relief to everybody. "Senior shadow ministers in the main opposition parties should also have known special advisors and access to the civil service as a matter of course. A Democrat and a Republican
Screwing with the System: Society would have you to believe that politics is like a baseball game. You're either a Cardinals fan or a Royals fan. As if the Democrats and Republicans were tribes or that they actually stood for something. The reality is that both parties have control and to pick one at the exclusion of the other is to cut yourself off from half of government. It doesn't mean that I like the Democrats, or that I like the Republicans. It means that I choose to put my biases aside in order to be a cause meaningful change. What matters is who is best for the country, not what party you belong to. And by being a member of both parties, it forces them to work harder that being a member of a third or forth party. Both of these pictures were taken the same year, actually within a month of each other. The picture with Hillary was taken at the 1992 Missouri State Democratic convention. This was before Clinton won the Democratic Primary. Hillary was the keynote speaker. This convention was my first experience with party politics. In many states there are no primaries. The party members elect their candidates. But to be a party member, all you have to do is show up. I managed to get elected as a delegate all the way to the state convention where I cast my vote for Bill Clinton. So I became one of the 400 or so Democrats in Missouri who actually voted in the primaries for president.

  • The debate over the leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame's identity has caused a curious about-face by Washington politicians, with Democrats who have long favored a laissez-faire attitude toward leaks of classified information now decrying them, and Republicans who once wanted to criminalize every such leak suggesting that the one involving Ms. Plame wasn't so terrible. "This is just shameless," a former Justice Department official, Bruce Fein, said. He said the political posturing on both sides may actually encourage more leaks. "It really is staggering. It undercuts their own claim that it's serious business, because it makes people in the bureaucracy think the only issue is whether you have enough politicians lined up behind you." Q. I'm thinking of not voting in the next election except maybe for a third-party candidate. After all, there's not a dime's worth of difference between the Republican and Democratic Parties. Is there? A. Your opinion is shared by millions and is reinforced daily by David Letterman, Jay Leno, patronizing political ads and banal 20 second news bites from candidates. Politicians do themselves no favors by chanting empty slogans like a mantra: "lower taxes", "more jobs", "a strong defense", "a safer environment". But for those willing to look behind the trite catchphrases of politicians and the shockingly shallow way in which the media reports on politics a considerable difference emerges. This is best demonstrated not by looking at what politicians say, but how they vote.
